All wonderful pieces of advice. I especially noticed the value in "draw slower". It can be so tempting to think drawing quickly is what the professionals do, and so must I, but in slowing down, it makes each stroke so much more deliberate. I've absolutely noticed a difference in quality in my own work. Thanks for the excellent guidance!
I work a 9-5 job, and by the time I get home, I am so drained that even though I want to draw/paint, I just don’t have the energy to do so. I also hate the feeling of telling myself I'll wait for inspiration over the weekend, but it never comes.
Welcome to the club. What helps is starting with a drawing that's more or less scribbles. Because starting is the hard part. Works for me. And also don't judge yourself. Make it fun or therapeutic. Do it for the sake of drawing/sketching and don't look at it as a chore. Don't set deadlines. You're not at your job, you're enjoying your hobby. To be completely honest: works 75 % of the time....but better than what I did before: nothing
Great advice. Draw more isn't a bad idea but, like you say, it isn't always helpful. I do often struggle with feeling ready and I often get discouraged with my results. Drawing too fast has never been an issue for me; quite the opposite. I think my biggest issue is going into detail in a portion of the drawing before the rest of the image is even started. As far as references go, I think it's important to note that references should be used for elements of an artwork rather than the entirety of the image. I have seen more than a few "artists" who only recreate whatever photo they are using for reference.
i got a portfolio review and the guy said wow these ideas are amazing its something fresh and new. And then he just said "just draw more" and i was like, i know you said amazing positive things i was hoping to hear. you also just said the one thing i didnt want to hear. i HATE when people say just draw more because im left wondering, but for how long? whats the trajectory here? where am i at in terms of my art skills? i need almost like a progress bar or else im just swirling in impending doom of not knowing where to go from. reall nice break down though, im glad someone finally addressed the "just draw more" thing
i having a drawing daily time limit for 10-20 mins can be good to draw to fun instead of super focus and it can be random inspiration. Dont have to finish it either
thank you very much for your videos. I love drawing and it's probably the only thing that brings me pleasure and a sense of self-realization. lately I've been struggling and consumed by negative thoughts about the fact that I don't try hard enough, that I can't do anything and that I'll never be able to reach the level of drawing that I want when I look at other artists. even though many of the works that I've posted on social media have received a lot of positive feedback, I still scold myself all the time for mistakes and failures. every day I fight with myself and my thoughts instead of just drawing. your videos have really supported me (although I've watched a lot of similar videos on this topic) but it was your advice that opened my eyes to my fears, which I simply didn't realize. thank you
I found you very recently but you are gold for what you're talking about. Almost all your points in your videos have been brewing for a long time in my brain. So thank you so much for what you do.
"Stop Waiting For The Moment You Feel Ready" I feel incredibly called out here. I want to draw characters, Hoyo characters to be specific. And as you pointed out in your next point, the drawing ending up really bad is what prevented me from doing it. I hyperfocused on shapes....for some reason
youre so good at inspiring a flow state with these videos !! i just discovered how much i benefit from figuring an illustration out sketching with blue and black pen (as a digital artist)
There were some great reminders and new perspectives to think about here! I'm getting back into drawing after about a 7-8 year hiatus and it totally was from myself getting in my own way by creating rules that made no sense. Honestly, your words about using references as you draw just clicked for me. It's so simple, but so true. I don't know where it came from, but I realize I've felt I needed to be "good enough" to draw things from memory. And that's so silly because I allow myself to learn by observing and doing studies, but not while drawing? I'm going to start doing this moving forward and see how it makes me feel. Great video, and I look forward to more advice and wisdom from a professional artists with the mind to teach and share :D
I swear man, this channel is such a blessing. You've really been saving my art lately and I was really uncertain if I could respark that fire I had for drawing a year back. All of these tips are so significant to me because I often feel like I have to wait for the right time to draw something, keep restarting a sketch, and tend to draw really fast. I've been trying to break my habit of doing the same process too. Thats mostly because of so many of these youtube tutorials on how to draw this or that. They cloud my brain and force me to draw in a way that isn't true to ME. Its been getting better though, thanks to you :) Exited to draw some of my story ideas!
Honestly and no joke: You might just put out the most helpful Art Advice/ Tutoring videos on the platform! 🤘😁 I am tooooootally not guilty of most those things in the video. Me? No way 🤣 But if i was, i would have made sticky notes all throughout watching the video. Really, thank you 🙌
Don't wait till you're ready.. guiltyyy. I've been getting better this year, though! Illustrating my first dream. It's not perfect, but hey, the alternative was nothing and forget the dream Here I am at the end, and proud to say I figured out multiple of these. Definitely watching myself to sketch looser at first than I'd do before, and unsuprisingly it pays off every time.. I found that 'taking your time' especially IN that sketch phase is crucial, otherwise I'll get lost in mindless scribbles. Especially when the pose in my head is clear, strategic lines will get me further before the idea fogs up.
Like the video. I have been drawing for a year now. Sadly i am all alone in this. I dont have the money to get a professional mentor. I hade a mentor that tried to help me for free. He just ditched me without saying anything. That made me realise that i am a lost cause. I am simply not learning. 😢
For me when it comes to using references, especially when drawing for fun, I don’t really know how to properly use the references without ending up just copying it. I’ve heard using multiple references for one drawing can help but I’m not sure how to do that either.

Thanks for watching and sharing your insight! Glad it's helpful!
Drawing is like any other skill-you just need to show up, practice consistently, and aim to get 1% better every day. 😊 Thanks for sharing the video!
You're totally right!

All of this was gold - stuff I had to learn on my own over the years.
If I could go back and tell younger me all of this, I absolutely would. Guess we just have to pass it along!
Thanks for watching!

I understand that feeling! It’s easy to feel lost without a roadmap, and being told to do what you’re already doing is frustrating.

I need to pretty much always use references because I have aphantasia.
I recommend it either way!

I’d love to do a tutorial on this!
@ I would love to see one cause it’s so hard to find 😭
love that the baldur's gate 3 brainrot is seeping through this tutorial
you should draw more
First
AYYYY Whats up ;)
Or maybe we can just draw more 🤷♂️
Also valid
so in the end, you DO have to draw more
