Pearl Reference 14x6.5 Snare for $400....

- In this episode I hit a 20 ply monster, that's 14 plies of maple and 6 of birch and with a shell that think it's not as loud as you might think.
With all those plies it still has amazing sensitivity which goes against the usual thick shell characteristics.

blimey, what a find and what a bargain, the hoops alone would probably be 100; Sounds and looks great
It was good idea from my wife to stop past, especially considering the price of these now.
I like how it sounds at low tuning. Very powerful
Low on this drum is super punchy and controlled.
Sounds beautiful, low and medium 5unint sound great. And it's my favorite color, white!
You would think 20 plies wouldn't work so well but it does, I will visit this drum in another video very soon.
Great recording sound that I've never heard since 90s music 👍👍👍
I’ve used this a lot in sessions, one of those drums that just works.
@@IAMDRUMMER Found one for 500 Can near me, Im in Canada, so thats like 400 US. Ive been looking for my first studio snare for a long time, think I should do it? If I dont get this, Ill probably get something like a Ludwig Supraphonic.
What’s the retail on them over in Canada?
Have you tried Steve’s Music?
@@IAMDRUMMER About $850-900
I just traded mine at the Chicago Drum Show for a 3 ply Ludwig w/re rings from 1962. So glad I did. It's a good snare, but just not for me. It was a green sparkle finish. I believe it was called "Road to Oz".
Not all snares fit all ears, I love mine especially because the volume of the snare isn’t as loud as you expect it to be. That Ludwig you got sounds like a million bucks….can’t wait to hear it.
@@IAMDRUMMER It is super nice, but like you said to each their own. The snare I gave up will make some drummer EXTREMELY HAPPY!
Tipo de caixa que eu gosto de ouvir.
Have you got one one, grab one if you can as I really do recommend it, such a great snare.
That is a great deal for that snare I’m looking at the moment for one and I can’t find one under $1190aud.
Trust me it was a one time deal as I never seen another one cheaper especially new in the box, deals do come up especially on the used ones.
2:37 thanks
I'm going to ask you again, what is the color combination on them DW drums.? You said you had a story about them you were going to post. There absolutely beautiful. Please reply!!!
Store is coming next week where I will reveal all.
I've got one of these babies, phenomenal snare drum. I've been considering having a try at wooden hoops just to see what it would be like.
Do it and let me know how it turns out.
How did It turn out?
@@simone5753 I suppose it was nothing to write home about. Wooden hoops are good at taming metal snare drums. 20 ply + wood hoops… less projection, less crack, a bit dead. Could be adequate for specific situations, but you would get tired of it very quickly.
That is my assumption. I would like to know if I was right, from someone who has really tried it. :)
Low and medium tuning sounds nice. It seems to me that high tuning, although nice overall, on the pearl reference snares I have listened to does give a bit of ringing. How does it sound from up close?
Probably one of the best snares I’ve ever played, very warm with a nice bite.
Great video!
Thanks man, really appreciate the kind words.
Very nice and sounds great! I just found a deal on a 5pc Reference kit that I couldn't pass up. Came with the same snare drum/size all rootbeer fade finish. Looks much better in person. Only tried out the snare drum once so far and sounds kinda crappy..I think I'm going to try a couple of evans heads on it and see what happens. The thing is a tank. Rock on!
Dude that’s awesome, I can recommend an Evan’s coated G1 or UV1…..also love at the reverse power centre, beast of a head. Combined with some Puresound Brass wires you really can’t go wrong.
@@IAMDRUMMER Thanks so much for your recommendations! I really appreciate that very much!! 🤘
Anytime, let me know how it goes.
You're such a Lucky dude .... :D Could never effort this Snare :D
Joe Never day that man as yo never know what is around the corner. I had no idea there was a sale on until we drove passed it. Stopped in and there it was in a box.
Crazy :D
This one or Gretsch bell brass snare?
Are you asking if I would pick the Gretsch over this, touch decision as they both offer very unique sounds.
14 by 6.5
THIS SNARE IS lacquer FINISH DON'T YOU??
Marine ply wrap.
Puta que pariu caralho!!!! Que maravilha!!!
It's a pretty amazing snare. É uma besta de um tambor
400$? Rather 800
Only paid $400.
I’m so lucky to have the same snare 14x6.5 20 ply in shimmer of oz finish and that’s probably the best snare I have ever used and that’s my ideal and go-to snare whenever I play any live or record any stuffs ...
Oh man I love that finish, I didn't have a choice bit for $400 I wouldn't care if it was oink.
talk about , volumn , and attack i got one and its sounds best to me tuned low to mid , this has more grunt than some metal snares in fact most power i have ever heard in a snare i like evans power centre on mine and no snare on
It’s such a nice sounding snare and I recently used it in a session and man it was killer especially the mid tuning.
Im not a fan of the sound of their drum but Pearl Snare ...sound beautiful .
For the price of the drum it’s pretty good bang for buck, pun intended.
I would love to hear this snare with 1.6mm hoops!
I could try and track some down.
Please let me know if you do a video with 1.6 hoops.
$400 for that was a STEAL
Almost as good as winning lotto.
Hi. Since a long time I so often lisenign to this drum. And its amaizing. Now, It is quiet hard ro get it. So here comes my question. Are you interested to sell it? Best regard Marc
Hey Marc, I know they still make them and even on the used market they are floating around but I am sorry to disappoint you but this drum will stay with me for a very long time.
:)) Thanks for your comment. It´s a nice drum so I realy can understand you:) chears@@IAMDRUMMER
Anytime brother, they do pop up especially on Reverb etc.
same snare dude... used by stanley randolph in abu dhabi during stevie wonder tour march 2011.. very nice.. none can compare..
I don't blame him for using it, very versatile.
$400 was a super deal
Tell me about it, there were three boxes stacked up and nothing on the box except it said Reference, could have been brass, steel or this 20 ply. Talk about bloody lucky especially when it was the wife’s idea to stop and have a look at the sale.
You inspire wow I am impressed!
You are way too kind.
5:25 imagine doing something insane with the kick in the demo of an incredible snare
I really want to revisit this snare in a video and might just do a sloppy McSlop double kick pattern.
Great review!
Fat groove too!!!!
Well done.
Thanks brother, deeply appreciated.
I’m trying to decide 6.5 or 5.0 so far I like the 6.5 at list on the videos I watched sounds HUGE . I can not wait to watch the NYE video with vinnie colaiuta Snare. I actually want one of those too . Cheers
6.5 is my go to depth with most drums as it’s proven standard almost, having said that a 5” has more bite to it and still sounds amazing. The Vinnie Gretsch is a killer drum and I was laying in to it for hours. The band coins get enough of it which is unusual for a band.
I got a pretty good deal on an ultracast for only $160aud thats one sweet snare.
That’s a killer deal....fantastic drum.
El sonido de esta caja es impresionante
It's pretty sweet.
Where you bought it for 400 buck wow I like buy one 😊
Bought it around 2012 and should have also grabbed the other box.
My gosh man, turn off the 20 tonnes of reverb so we can hear the drum!!!
I couldn’t.
I am drummer if you read this I'm thinking of getting one of these 13 by 6.5 or the 14.5 give your thoughts thanks my dad wanted me to ask
Hi the....it’s killer.
I have the 14x5.5 and its a ROCKIN' drum! If you havent already done so, I say DO IT!
That is a seriously nice snare drum, and what for, about £220? That is a f------ good deal alright. I recently got a mint 80s FF Pearl steel14 x 6½ for about the same and I thought I did well. Anyway, I'm willing to bet it's the best wood-shell snare drum in your collection, but if I was going to get one, and pay the money, then it would have to be the brassy. If that thing is a rifle, then the brass version is a 20mm cannon.Tell me something - when you tune up the top head from low to high, do you tighten the snare head too, or leave it at the same tension?
Was at a car park like drum sale and just sitting in a box un opened, when the said $400 I thought it was a MASSIVE mistake....nope was $400.
That's like 80% off - INSANE!!!! Great deal, IAM!
where did you get that beauty for 400$? In Germany you must pay around 1050$
We were heading back from looking at a reception centre for our wedding and there was a car park drum and percussion sale, we popped in just to have a look and there was two Pearl boxes stacked on a table. I felt both and went with the heaviest. Took it to the counter and they ran the tag and said it was a 14x6.6 20 ply Reference snare in marine pearl for $400 brand new.
It's not often my wife says....you need to buy this.
I AM DRUMMER You are so lucky.
Right time and right place....it was case of "Yeah lets have a look" and was a really lethargic "YEAH" from me.
That's a lucky buy! damn! I got mine for 800 =( purple craze
may I ask.. how did you get it for 400? your a really lucky bloke ! cheers from another aussie
Really was an absolute fluke of a day.
My wife and I went to look at and of course book our wedding at a reception centre and on the way saw a music store that had a carpark sale on, when the wife says to stop on and have a look you don't argue. Once inside I saw a Pearl Reference box still sealed, took it over to the counter and it was scanned at $400, opened it up and it was this snare and paid the $400. What got me was this was sitting there all day and no one bothered to grab it.
@@IAMDRUMMER thats like winning the lottery! great find! lesson is .. its all about timing. ;)
And when the wife says you should have a look at this drum sale.
Looks and sounds great at all 3 tunings!
I've got a 20 ply 14x7 Ludwig Epic "Brick" snare that I absolutely love! Bought it in 2012 new for just over $200!!! It's aqua blue and it's gorgeous. Like yours, it has a wide tuning range and really projects!
Happy Drumming!!!
You got that for $200 are you serious, that's awesome. The Pearl 20 ply is one of my favourite drums and love the fact it's over bearing in terms of volume.
@@IAMDRUMMERYes, I'd rather have a drum that's loud that I can reign in when I need to than a drum that's quiet that I have to really pound to be heard!
Agreed, next gig whenever that will be I have to dig this one out and give it a "crack" so to speak.
@@IAMDRUMMER You show that boss who's drum!...You know what I mean.
Oh I will don't worry about that.
Nice review. Medium tuning seems like the sweet spot. Those thick Reference snares are beasts.
Excellent bang for buck as well.
Indeed, for that price, you can't go wrong.
Great snare videos .. I really enjoy them. Well done. I have the D.W. Black Nickel over brass 14 x 5.5" Collector's series snare drum among a bunch of others. I was wondering what type of Evans drum head would you recommend using? Presently, I have a the Genera Snare Batter on it (single 10 ply with a 2 mil control ring on the underside that floats with the head). I like the idea of the control ring for eliminating excessive overtones, since it it a metal snare drum, however since it is brass and a little warmer.... is the drum head that I'm using "overkill" for "ring" control?
John Di Raimo I would suggest the Evans Bogo head, it has 2 plies with a control ring sandwiched between the 2 plies
Thank you so much for the compliments and yes the DW NOB is a drum I would love to play and own at some stage when I come across one. I would use a coated Evans G1 with a snare weight so you can add instantly a small, medium and large amount of dampening. It's all personal preference and taste.
Thanks for your suggestion. I generally prefer a single ply drum head for the snare. My concern with 2 plies is that the snare's natural sensitivity spectrum might get lost and be choked. In essence the drum head (Genera Snare Batter) I'm using now is the exact same as the Evans G1 only with a 2 mil. control ring underneath. I guess it all depends on the sound that you want to hear ... as "I AM DRUMMER" says ... it's all personal taste.
Thank you for responding. The drum head I'm using now (Evans Genera Snare Batter) is the exact same as the Evans 10 ply you suggest .... only with the 2 mil control on the bottom. As I'm still learning differences in drumheads and what to use with wood snares versus metal snares .... what are your thoughts on using 2 ply drum heads on the snare? G2's etc. Thank you !
I'm the same and I did play around with 2 ply snare heads for a while for durability and they sure do last a bit longer but with playing trad I really want that sensitivity and to hear as much of the raw natural tone of the drum.
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍🥁
Thanks man.
sounds amazing i cant believe 400. here in usa them are 600 up
Well the conversion from $400AUD to USD is about $290….so it was a bit of a bargain.
Could you tell me the tension of the ties of the top and bottom heads for each tuning level (low- mid - high)? thank you
I might do a tuning clip next as I do get a lot of questions about it.
Is that a Pearl BLX in white behind you there? I used to own one in Sequoya red .. Sold it off after my wrist collapsed (7 ops on it so far, pins, bone removed and so on) as I thought I may be having a full fusion op .. Luckily I didn’t, I’m about to have my 8th op ... ANYWAY they are lovely kits! I have a Pearl Masters MCX now.
It sure is but what the hell has happened to your wrist brother, not good.
I AM DRUMMER broke 3 bones in it playing football at school when I was 15 (1985) .. It never got seen to (Less said about that the better. Fell out of bed into it in 1991, went to hospital and found out about the original injury, 2 bones had healed without complications but my scaphoid was dead. Had 2 bone graft and pin ops to try and repair it but they failed. Suffered a wrist collapse in 2004, had a 4 corner fusion op in 2005, then metal removal in 2007, I also had a severe TFCC tear repaired but the fusion had also failed, had another fusion op last year that ALSO failed so now I’m waiting for yet another op.
I AM DRUMMER The wrist injury has really hampered my technique development too .. I’m pretty awful at all that stuff, tried moller, push pull techs so I could play nice fast 16ths on the hats but just don’t have the strength or dexterity to do it all, that said I’m not really into drum solo stuff really but it would be nice to be able to do it. I like phat hip/hop break beats anyway, check out my channel, watch some of the live Monkey Sons stuff and let me know what you think.
I AM DRUMMER request for ya ... Your next snare review .. Use the BLX!!
Got myself a 14x5 Reference pure on order in white marine pearl finish like yours, can’t wait until it turns up! 6 month wait! Cost me 600 GBP (As I’m in the U.K.) .. Yours sounds PHAT!!!!!
It is worth the....wait 6 months?
I AM DRUMMER ... If you want something specific in life it’s worth being patient .. So yes well worth the wait ... Plus I can pay it off bir by bit without skinting myself!! Lol
I AM DRUMMER sorry IAD, misread your reply .. Yes I’m sure it is worth the wait ... And I can’t wait!! Haha!! £600.00 .. Some places were quoting me £800.00 - £850.00!! That is ridiculous!!! Anyway it’s probably being made now so just have to be patient .. Got a wrist op coming up so .. 😭😭
800 quid are you serious?
I AM DRUMMER I know! That’s what I thought, ridiculous price! And that’s from a shop I used all the time! Got one now on order for £200.00 less
VERY NICE PUNGENT SOUND !
Hello, $400 is high or low price? Thanks
This was $400AUD so it was a complete bargain.
@@IAMDRUMMER =)
As good as dws
Different animals I think, both great drums.
I don’t think he has enough drums..🤔
You will laugh, I’ve sold a few kits since.
$400 for a high-quality snare drum is not that much, Black Beauties go for $600 plus. Sonor, Tama SLP, and the top of the line DW are $750 and up.
Pearl Reference snare drums are actually pretty well priced. that said you will not find a better value in a high-end snare drum then the Pork Pie Big Black.
This drum back then retailed for around the $1200AUD so to get it for $400 is a bargain.
@@IAMDRUMMER , exactly. To spend less then $500 and get a top quality snare drum is a rarity. You definitely got a steal of a deal at $400!
Is just me or do Pearl drums just always sound “ok”.
Its just you and maybe a few others 😊
Funny, I would say the same thing about DW.
For me I’ve always felt that way about DW and Tama. Pearl and Sonor were always my favorite sounding kits. But still above all, tuning technique made the biggest difference.
I love TAMA hardware - I have Pro and Star stands, Iron Cobra pedals and hi-hat and a couple of fantastic 1st Chair drum stools (thrones?) - but my PEARLs are my babies, and I'm on my 4th kit. P.S. I do have a DW snare stand and it's just OK! Oh yes, and PAISTE all the way!
Have you ever played any refference drums?? Other than the snare obv.
I have actually a full kit in this colour and it was pretty incredible.
Crazy good deal.
I have been in love with it for a long time, but could never find the guts to justify the cost...
Honestly I would get one, it's a drum that is very versatile.
What kind/ type of head drum do you are use..??
Evans Costed G1.
