I will always love country, even if its not 'cool'. Country songs can make you laugh, cry, dance, and reflect just by the stories they tell. And they always somehow hit home. And that's what I love about this genre. I love this song so much. It has such a powerful line with "I hope I'm at least half the dad that he didn't have to be."

This song affects me quite a bit. I’m now 36 years old. When I was 8 years old my mom met the man who stepped up and I proudly called him my dad. In may of 2016 he passed away from a heart attack. This has always been our song I can now listen to this song and smile. Thanks dad for all that you did for me and my brothers.

Your mom is a great woman, most of single mothers are just trying to get married for financial reasons. Don't make this mistake with modern women.

As someone who’s “daddy” married my mom when I was 7, I’m so thankful for him stepping up and loving us like his own. He’s my daddy. Blood means nothing.

People pick on country music and it gets a bad rap sometimes but if you give it a chance it tells some great heart wrenching stories that a lot of us can relate to. I cried over this one. Brad paisley is a great writer/ storyteller. Never heard this before but it really got to me.

I’ve commented on many of your TikTok’s- possibly even this one. But my dad- the man I call dad- came into my life when I was my 6 months old. My brothers were 6 & 10. None of our biological fathers were involved in our lives and our dad- the man who raised us- really fucking stepped up when he didn’t have to. He died when I was 19, thirteen years ago, & goddamn I miss him every day. I’m not a father, and he surely made plenty of mistakes, but overall, I really do hope I’m half the parent he was.

My brother just became a step dad and I hope those kids can one day come to realize he stepped up to the plate when he didn't have to. He could have walked away but he didn't. He became a step dad at age 22 to 2 kids. Something a lot of people forget is that just because you're a biological father doesn't make you a dad. Sperm donor just makes you biologically related. It's the actions that make you a father/dad.

my biological dad was that man for my half-sisters on my mom's side. their biological father was the ultimate duchebag only worth enough of a mention in that he fathered two great women who went on to have great kids.

I married a woman and her two sons from a previous family. I felt they were mine, no they were mine didn't matter how I felt about it. I knew they felt the same way. I was very close to them, and from the beginning I always did what was best for them, including trying to make sure they kept a relationship with their biological father, if that's what they wanted As much as it hurt to see them hurting themself by trying to earn his love, he would never love anyone but himself. Long story short, bio-dad brought them home early one Saturday morning, instead of late Sunday afternoon. Got his truck sideways turning into our gravel drive. He barely gave them time to get out of the truck, before he was backing up to turn around and leave. I almost managed to get out there in time to stop him and find out his problem. But he got away, so I got the boys in the house, and asked what was wrong, it seems they had talked before going over there, and they had told him that he wasn't their dad anymore, I was. He didn't like that. They did not care, they made a point to never speak to him again. So I cried like a baby watching this. I've told the boys, and other people, that I did nothing special, I don't deserve to be praised, all I did is what any good parent would do, I made sure all their needs were met, and every decision was what was best for them.

Totally different than this one, but hilarious. ua-cam.com/video/q3zkkLckeyM/v-deo.html BTW, I think you'll like this one as it features an actress that was asked if she'd like to be in this video and it turned out that they started dating and have been married now for quite a few years and have 2 kids. It's called I'm Gonna Miss Her .. you're going to laugh at this one too. ua-cam.com/video/WwRrKaq0IyY/v-deo.html

My husband and I are white. We have a biological daughter that we conceived after about 10 years of infertility treatments. She is Miracle Baby #1. A few years later we were approached by a woman from our church whose daughter was unwed and pregnant and was looking for a couple to adopt her unborn child, as she wasn't going to be able to afford to raise the child herself. So we decided to adopt this precious little boy, who is bi-racial. He is our Miracle Baby #2. They are both in their 20's now. Both of our children are amazing human beings, and loved more than anything in this world. Both are, we feel, miracles sent to us straight from God. Families can be put together in many different ways. Absolutely nothing matters but love.

Any man can father a child, but, it takes a very special man, to be a Dad even when the connection isn't biological. There's a lotta good stepmoms and stepdads out there who've stepped up and became Mom and Dad. THANK YOU, and may God bless you all, so very much. 👍👍

Just a little note (taken from the interwebs): "The song was based on Paisley's frequent co-writer and best friend, Kelley Lovelace's stepson McCain Merren, who attended the 2000 ACM Awards as Paisley's guest. According to Lovelace, Paisley said to him, "Let's make a song about you two that will make your wife cry.""

All songs about fathers and their kids...step or otherwise tend to get to me. My Dad was a monster so I never really saw myself as having a Dad. Then he went and died when I was eighteen...Rude. I mean, Karma...but still rude, yo. Brad Paisley really does have some great songs.

Paisley co-wrote "He Didn't Have to Be" with his longtime friend and frequent co-writer, Kelley Lovelace. The tune was based on true events from Lovelace's life: The tunesmith became a stepdad to son McCain Merren when he married his wife, Karen.

I met my husband when my son was four years old. My ex husband stayed in my son’s life, but my husband has stepped up and been a dad to him. Financially my new husband stepped in and has provided everything for my son. He has bought him his first car, paid car and health insurance, provided a cell phone, built us a house, enabled my son to play soccer from 4 y/o till he was 19 y/o with several years of travel soccer, paid for him to run track, and play football. My son went to private school, worked hard and earned a full ride to college except about $2000 a semester we have to pay for meal plan and some housing. My husband is covering all of that as well as his other expenses so he can focus on school and keep his scholarships. He is in the honors program so we wanted him to concentrate on school. Our son also runs track and cross country in college. The first time our son heard this song he said it reminded him of his dad. By dad he meant his step-dad. God Bless those who can love another’s child as their very own.

I have a half sister (I hate to say that... she's my sister!) Anyway, her dad died from leukemia when she was 2. My mom met my dad a couple of years later. I'm their only biological child, but my dad will tell you REALLY FAST that he doesn't love me an ounce more than he loves my sister. You would never know he isn't her biological dad. It's awesome. If it tells you anything, I was several years old before I asked why my sister and I have different last names. My dad is an amazing man. He said the first time she called him daddy, he teared up.

That’s my wonderful dad took on myself and two sisters then gave us another sister and 2 brothers, he’s 82 years old, still fixing my car and making sure I have enough money, he always done everything in my house’s from electric, plumbing and more, love him so much and glad he took on our family as he was just a young boy. Mum and dad went through a lot as back in the days she was talked about as she was married but her husband was jumping around with other women, I’m so glad mum didn’t listen to my gran and some of her family, dread to think what might have happened, over the years my mum’s family got to liking and even loving him, he’ll always be my dad x🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿💕

This song has to be my favorite from Brad. While my situation isn't exactly the same, I still never knew my dad (he went to prison for armed robbery not long after getting my biological mom pregnant), and my bio mom was in no fit shape to take care of me, so I was adopted by my great uncle and aunt, who treated me like their own child. Unfortunately, the person I call my dad passed away last May after a 5 year fight with liver cancer, but he held on long enough to meet my own son. I miss him every day, but I feel like I can see a lot of him in my son, who seems to have a lot of his same facial expressions and body language.
