Leroy Brown was found in a feral colony. The caregiver noticed his eyes had a weird vibrating motion so she took him to a veterinarian. After a thorough exam, including bloodwork it was determined that Leroy was very healthy except for the eyes. He could not be returned to the feral colony safely so the veterinarian contacted FieldHaven to ask if we could take him.
The first thing we did was take him to UC Davis to have a neuro exam. Without doing further invasive testing no cause could be found. Because he was otherwise very healthy it was decided we would place him with a foster who could monitor him for awhile and work on his socialization skills
His diagnosis at this time is idiopathic nystagmus. "Idiopathic" means no known cause and "nystagmus" is the involuntary and rhythmic movement of a cat's eyes.
It can be seen in Siamese cats but it's doubtful Leroy Brown has any Siamese as his coat color and body conformation has no characteristics of the breed.
