Great video. I rode 70 today and she’s a beautiful engine. Her whistle is such a great tone, and can be heard all throughout the park. I never grow tiresome of hearing that whistle.
Thanks! They've been leaving the coaches at the depot overnight for a few years now but this was the first time I'd caught the early morning switching. It was definitely cool to see them running the "wrong way" around the loop.

I might ride down if that’s the case. I heard elsewhere that it could be by this fall but we’ll see what happens. It has to get its wheels from Strasburg.
@@SmokyMtnSteam I noticed the similarities between Dollywood Express and Tweetsie Railroad is that they both have only two steam locomotives on the roster.
The mountain is 4.1% max, which is more than most railroad grades (little known fact: the true max is 4.5% which is around the back side of the Country Fair/Village. It's the only time they're under power on the way down). Still, a little surprised at the amount of wheel slip. Normally they do a pretty good job of keeping it anchored to the rails. The other locomotive is road #192 and nicknamed Katie. Years ago, the master mechanic/road foreman allowed cab rides and I rode up there dozens of times, from 1995-2006/7. They even built a 3-person bench seat in the front of the tender to accommodate more Guests (and give the poor fireman, who had to give up his seat when a Guest rode the cab, a chance to get his seat back). Sadly, when he retired in 2009, the cab rides were discontinued by the new master mechanic/road foreman.

That shot was taken at the main crossing, just next to the fence by the little market. All of the nature shots were taken on the Foothills Parkway between Wears Valley and Walland.

Generally speaking, if a theme park railroad crew does not sound the 'proper' signal at a grade crossing it is due to the fact that the official signal would be too loud and/or distracting for the comfort of park guests and employees. (that's in terms of both duration and volume of the sound)

The engineers care more about making music with the whistle and putting their own style in it rather than bending to the “proper” code. They’re a theme park, not an official railroad like the Union Pacific and its equivalents.

This is a huge reason I wanna visit dollywood, a steam engine ride through the smokey mountains would be a once in a lifetime experience for me

I cannot recommend it enough! The park is great, the area is beautiful, and the train ride is sooo much fun and worth the money!
I’d also highly recommend you take time for Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg too! You could spend a whole month in the area and not see and do everything.

I can agree with you there. 70 generates 205 PSI. That makes any whistle she’s wearing sound great and loud.

It actually is, before Dolly or the Herschend family were involved it was built & owned by the same people as Tweetsie.

She's still operating, I think he only focused on her instead of 192, either that or it was 70's turn for today
192 does not have her drivers on. She is going through a small rebuild. She should be out here in a few weeks.

It does get hot in there - rode the cab every chance I got for years.

I hope to god wave 2 of the virus doesn't happen, because we need steam locomotives to keep us happy.
Considering the number of park guests walking around wearing their masks wrong and getting in each others' faces, I'm definitely concerned.
This was a nice video, except for having to see everybody wearing masks, which only reminds me of how oppressive and power-hungry our government is!
