  • Ahhh, more Nyregyházi, The Lost Genius. The only Scriabin piece by the lost legend Nyiregyházi that I could find and it is one of my favourite sonatas of him.
To say this performance is loud is an understatement. It is an utterly demonic rendition. In the climax its unbelievable how he is able to achieve such a sound and it is so emotional. It is like the final destination after an eternity and he lets everything out possible on the piano. Moreover, the voicing throughout the whole piece is beautiful and in the slower parts everything is so scriabinesque. The 2nd movement was amazing, and I love his jumpy interpretation with swift dynamic change, which is exactly how it should be played. Because of the unclarity, however, it was hard to track his playing with the score so there might be very minor errors.
I hust really enjoy his use of pedal and he makes Scriabin sound so different in a good way. The overuse of pedal sounds so good compared to the jumpy scriabin and makes it flow very smoothly. His tone colour in the second movement alone is just so impressive and the part with the broken bass chord pattern in the left hand sounds better than any other pianist. Plus dynamics. . The classical piano world is absolutely incomplete without Nyiregyhazi and his playing stays in your mind forever. Its just the sound and I forget about any mistakes. My favourite recording. Period.

Best 1st movement of all time, although I prefer feinberg and pogo. in mov. 2! I wish Yudina had recorded it.

Horrendous and entirely useless performance in the second movement. I'm pretty liberal with performance. Play at half speed, play at double speed, desynchronize the hands, play everything pianissimo, play everything fortissimo, add some octaves and fiddly bits and explosions, but at the least pretend to be a musician and hit the occasional note here and there. It's a shame too, because the romantic sensibilities of his playing would fit this Sonata if an effort to refine them had taken place at some point in the fifty years leading up to the performance.
5:13 Having listened to this piece hundreds of times you could quiz me on what this bit is supposed to be and I would never, ever get it. The page turner must have been out to the bathroom, and he--realizing that he forgot to memorize the grand re-entrance of the first movement theme somehow--dove into the piano with his forearm while turning the page with his free hand and skipping ahead. Following that is a passable rendering of the next section which vaguely resembles what a human being would do, so it's the only explanation.

The score shows six sharps, therefore the key is F# MAJOR!
