Regarding the EM/Bose suspension I can elaborate a bit why we don't have it already in cars I work for a company that supplies shock absorbers and suspension systems. And the reason the EM suspension is not yet in production is due to the following reasons. 1. Regulation : Every safety component (steering, braking, suspension,...) that can work fully electronic needs an mechanical and/or hydraulic back-up. That is also the reason we still have brake lines and a steering column. So an EM system also needs damping in case of an electrical shut off, and this means an passive back-up system in parallel that interferes with the EM system. 2. Power Consumption : Every electronically damper consumes power, which in the end comes from the fuel we put in it. The current active suspension systems can consume more than 4 kW of power in extreme conditions, and from the literature I found these systems consume more than 5 kW in normal use. This means without considering the losses of converting this power, you lose almost 7 hp or the fuel consumption goes up. Also every OEM is investing in electric cars and these systems will just eat away battery, in cars where people are already not really sure about the range they can achieve. At this moment it is simply a no-go to use a very high tech system that will make the car consume more power, while there are systems that can give a huge improvement which only use 150 W on average. 3. Production cost : the dampers are still quite complex to build in high numbers, so the price goes up. If you look at MB magic body control which is an € 5500 option on a € 110 000 car, the supplier will probably ask about € 3000 for the system. And MB charges extra for the added complexity to the production line, and also the control algorithm needed to make the car drive. My guesstimation is that these systems will be costing over € 10 k for the end consumer. 4. Driving pleasure : When we experimented with active suspension, the first thing we noticed was the feeling of detachment. This is dangerous because there is no sense of reaching a limit until it is too late. So the system was tuned to be a bit worse on comfort to regain the steering and grip feeling. So if you want this in a non-autonomous vehicle, you have to tune it to be not ideal in comfort for safety and driving pleasure. So again why waste € 10k in a system that cannot be used in it's full potential, and will be negative for the fuel consumption if you can have a € 5k (or less) system that will have a neglectable influence on fuel consumption and can be used for it's full potential. EM suspension will come in the end, but probably only in autonomous vehicles, because of the steering and handling feel. Sorry for the long text, but I hope this gives some explanation why it is not yet here.

0TruckMafk ☢TM™"... The BigMean CommentSection BadAss The problem is the same as with the modular smartphones. Cars age, new models arrive too fast and there is much better money can be pulled off of a new model than making the same parts for decades. I'm happy that we all don't have to drive cars like the FORD T-Model today because of technical evolution.
those are all issues that desktop pcs have to deal with and they're still modular, a modular system by nature can't be outdated and can even be more up to date because instead of waiting for a new model to come out with new or improved features you can just install the upgrade, as far as profit it gives better control over the price of the product, instead of pricing just one product you're selling multiple, so while someone might buy one part from one company they might still prefer to get a different part from your company i would question the crash safety of a modular car done in this style but the problems i'm picturing are present in cabover trucks, mainly being that when hit right the cab falls/flies/slides off [there are videos of them being hit by trains or other trucks and having the chassis pulled/knocked out from under the cab]
3:51 Fun fact, Preston Tucker, the designer of the Tucker 48, is the reason for a lot of our modern safety features. His car was one of the first to have seatbelts as standard. I would love to see what the Tucker motor company would've looked like today if the Big 3 hadn't shut it down. His car was a rear engine, RWD sedan powered by a lovely H6 which allowed the car to hit a top speed of 130 mph. That might not sound like much, but remember, this was in the 40s
Shouldn't be too difficult to make with a gimbal and some suspension on them. Probably too silly for regular cars though, see it become a feature on the next S-Class!

Maybe if it looked decent... Cool idea to have interchangeable bodies for different purposes, but I see a lot of cool automotive ideas wrapped in such an ugly package that nobody wants it. I guess it's just an unwritten rule in the automotive realm that groundbreaking concepts have to be ugly, when the idea, often a very good one, could work just as well with a more normal-looking car someone could drive without a paper bag over their head.
Why would LEDs help popup headlights? The reason they're illegal is safety, there are to very big safety issues with popups: 1. They could simply break and not pop up, I don't need to explain why this is a problem. 2. Pedestrian safety. If a pedestrian got run over by a car with popup headlights, the headlights would cause major damage to the body, you can imagine how

Underscorer, what do you mean by this? Like a hydrogen internal combustion engine? BMW (_I think_) has already done this, and it is *_much_* less efficient than an electric motor powered by a hydrogen fuel cell.
it is less efficient however it gives chances to older vehicles to still be on the road and retain their character aswell as producing zero emissions basically the old fashioned car enthusiasts choice for the future
Wait a minute. Steam engines for cars werent slow. They were A LOT faster than the petrol engines. But you needed to build up a pressure before you could go.

HomeAutomationX Some previous generation Toyota Prius models had solar powered roofs. The solar power was used to cool down the interior while the car was turned off and parked if I remember correctly.
I love how "can't get out of a car in a tight space" is always a reason for no gullwing doors in cars. Umm you can't get out of a normal car with normal doors if you're in a tight space either, and plenty of cars of those. granted you're right if the car rolls over, but most of the time normal doors are too banged up to get them open in a roll over too
ast5515 They actually measure it in gallons per mile, that's how bad it is. An advantage of turbines though is that you can use basically anything flammable as fuel. Cooking oil, alcohol, vodka, avgas, etc. Just not water.
"Gullwing doors make it difficult to exit a tight space" Uh, actually, I think not. I've driven a few DeLoreans and the doors actually require less space than conventional doors. Granted you have to remember to duck, but I'd rather have that option than sucking in my gut and hoping I don't scrape the car next to me as is often the case with conventional doors in tight spaces.
I would reinvent a rare transmission, instead of a computer and or a couple of musical instruments (CVT drums) controlling the speed and torque of a vehicle, I would implement some sort of simple system, where one shaft takes input from the engine, and through a driver selected set of gears, would transfer the power of the engine to a second shaft for output. The driver can have more fun and direct control of this transmission through a kind of lever or a "stick". I have no idea what to call it or if it even exists anymore or at all, but one can dream.
The car will keep going straight in mid air until you look down and realize you drove off a cliff. In which the system will shut off and you will plummet to your death. So don't look down.

Jenny Gavin-Wear Define the moment it is low light. There's your problem. My car monitors the light and makes that decision for me. Eventually most cars will probably have that capability. In my state it was argued that headlights should be turned on a hour earlier at dusk and off an hour later at dawn but the counter argument that carried the day was that late model cars have automatic light systems that would have to be changed to manual, and the lawmaker said he had no idea how to do that to his car. Apparently he spoke for most of them because it didn't pass.
anything automatic especially lights is a disaster. Horrible feature. My car, for example, has automatic low lights whenever you get inside. This effectively means that if I want to just sit in the car I have to open the door then close the door and then lock the car from the inside in order for it to think I am outside
BlackStar 458 I'm not saying that technology is a bad, it's good and getting better. I drive 1,200 miles a week for work and the stupidity on the roads is amazing, I don't see how there isn't many more accidents than there are. Making a car more "smart" has nothing to do with a person's inability to drive.
Totally wrong about steam cars. They were faster than internal combustion engines in fact one of them held the land speed record early on. The drawback was they needed heating up to start which took tool long.
There's some other, logistics-related problems with steam. Water consumption means relatively short range, heavy reliance on hydrocarbons means that you're putting out a lot of CO2 and other pollutants, and the larger amount of moving parts mean that maintenance is a problem - and people generally don't do a good job of maintaining their gas-powered cars as it is.
the amount of energy it takes for a steam car to run is much more than that of a gasoline powered car. even if they were the same horsepower, the steam car would be much more inefficient, and consume more energy. therefore it is fundamentally slow in comparison.

Geez, chill out people. Don't you ever learn about jokes? But just think about it. No pedestrian safety to be considered, and would create downforce on coupe bodies, rather than producing drag. And again: it. Is. A. Joke.
people just say like "OH ITS BECAUSE OF NEW REGULATIONS" but if they use the technology in the early corvettes where the whole thing flips, like why would that be a problem?
Once the USA allowed flush headlights in 1983, that was the end of the pop-up headlight in future models (with a few exceptions like the first Toyota MR2 and the first-generation Mazda Miata).
So I have to check you on the steam engine portion. A steam powered car held the land speed record for a while, not to mention they are incredibly easy to use and maintain. The main drawback was the time it took to bring a car up to full power. It couldn’t just crank and run like a gasoline engine.
@@jort93z it's a two door sport car, with a limited audience. @@antonlitvinau8142 "And since new engines die at around 150-200k, rotary might be pretty popular with the power and economy" What do you mean by that? Usually piston engines last longer than rotary's. Rotary's wear out more quickly. Also, they use more fuel, so that doesn't help with economy very much. I am not sure rotary engines can be improved above the level of piston engines, but they are trying.
@@jort93z rotary engines don't really need to be improved at the same level of a piston engine. they are a niche engine in a niche car, people who buy an rx9 would no doubt be buying it to have a rotary powerd toy not an eco friendly daily driver.
ACTUALLY, turbine engines are used and praised in the military world, especially in the design of the M1 Abrams MBT. So technically, turbine engines did take off.
True, but as I understand it they still eat through a massive amount of fuel. Which is acceptable for a weapon of war, but not so much for a privately owned vehicle.
>Steam cars >Slow Dobles could reach 150 mph and would sit comfortably at 70. The _actual_ reason why steam cars didn't take off is because Henry Ford could make and sell his cars quicker and cheaper, meaning internal combustion engines became the norm and steam fell from usage in automobiles.
When he says slow, it's not about maximum speed but about acceleration. Steam engines can not change rapidly their regime (their rpm if you prefer) unlike internal combustion ones
Moustiqueneige4, what if I say you, that gases can be compressed and stored under pressure? Some steam cars used to have a lot of torque. ua-cam.com/video/rUg_ukBwsyo/v-deo.html 22:30 about torque (1355.82 N/m)
Have you seen Jay Leno starting up his Doble E-25? Or his White steam car? The starting procedures for steam cars are complex and slow. The Doble does kick ass once hot but to get it hot though. Early internal combustion engines were as complex as steam cars as evidenced by Alex driving the 1903 Mercedes Simplex but this complexity was solved early enough in the lifespan of them to help them pull away from steam cars.
LadyAnuB, early ICE weren't complex at all, they were basic, but they didn't perform as well as some of the steam cars (Doble, for example). As ICE advanced, steam became not viable.

@@Jinppa you need an citroen xantia or an citroen c6 hydraulic
@@clememe1 C6 yes, but Xantia? In terms of comfort, the old CX is easily better, not to forget DS which is said to be super-soft. Probably SM would be more comfortable too. In terms of both handling and comfort, I would say the XM has the best balance between the two. C6 comes very close, although strangely you can feel small ripply undulations at low speed - C6 is supreme on the motorway, though.
Rocket brakes??? Reminds me to Garry's Mod thrusters lol.

0TruckMafk ☢TM™"... The BigMean CommentSection BadAss The problem is the same as with the modular smartphones. Cars age, new models arrive too fast and there is much better money can be pulled off of a new model than making the same parts for decades. I'm happy that we all don't have to drive cars like the FORD T-Model today because of technical evolution.
those are all issues that desktop pcs have to deal with and they're still modular, a modular system by nature can't be outdated and can even be more up to date because instead of waiting for a new model to come out with new or improved features you can just install the upgrade, as far as profit it gives better control over the price of the product, instead of pricing just one product you're selling multiple, so while someone might buy one part from one company they might still prefer to get a different part from your company
i would question the crash safety of a modular car done in this style but the problems i'm picturing are present in cabover trucks, mainly being that when hit right the cab falls/flies/slides off [there are videos of them being hit by trains or other trucks and having the chassis pulled/knocked out from under the cab]
i know and now its pretty much a windshieldless f1 with the halo addition
3:51 Fun fact, Preston Tucker, the designer of the Tucker 48, is the reason for a lot of our modern safety features. His car was one of the first to have seatbelts as standard. I would love to see what the Tucker motor company would've looked like today if the Big 3 hadn't shut it down. His car was a rear engine, RWD sedan powered by a lovely H6 which allowed the car to hit a top speed of 130 mph. That might not sound like much, but remember, this was in the 40s

capsula idea was cool
Maybe if it looked decent... Cool idea to have interchangeable bodies for different purposes, but I see a lot of cool automotive ideas wrapped in such an ugly package that nobody wants it. I guess it's just an unwritten rule in the automotive realm that groundbreaking concepts have to be ugly, when the idea, often a very good one, could work just as well with a more normal-looking car someone could drive without a paper bag over their head.
Led pop-up headlights
Not really. I mean they are normal headlights but only a child of an design period. Like boxy looking cars

Why would LEDs help popup headlights? The reason they're illegal is safety, there are to very big safety issues with popups:
1. They could simply break and not pop up, I don't need to explain why this is a problem.
2. Pedestrian safety. If a pedestrian got run over by a car with popup headlights, the headlights would cause major damage to the body, you can imagine how

Solar power on the roof of every car?
Solar power has improved so much. They should at least charge the battery full when parked
not really, it would take days to charge an ev battery, even in good sunlight. house roofs or mass installations are much more viable
who mentioned EVs? ICE cars can very well use solar to help charge the battery.
Bean_ It would take days 5 years ago. Not so sure about today. Either way every little bit helps, even if it charges it half way. Who leaves their car at empty all the time?
HomeAutomationX Some previous generation Toyota Prius models had solar powered roofs. The solar power was used to cool down the interior while the car was turned off and parked if I remember correctly.
I love how "can't get out of a car in a tight space" is always a reason for no gullwing doors in cars. Turbine engines: modern tanks use them. :p
And they get awesome MPG doing it, right?
I'm not certain MPG's of utmost importance in a usage case like that.
ast5515 They actually measure it in gallons per mile, that's how bad it is.
An advantage of turbines though is that you can use basically anything flammable as fuel. Cooking oil, alcohol, vodka, avgas, etc. Just not water.
Josh Mason combat range is definitely a consideration of tanks. It's one of the main weak points of the M1 Abrahms
+SkyEye MCCIX; firewood too? Maybe easier to fuel than woodgas.

I would really like to see lights that turn on automatically in low light become a legal requirement.
Apparently he spoke for most of them because it didn't pass.
so have it on all the time you yank
anything automatic especially lights is a disaster. Horrible feature. My car, for example, has automatic low lights whenever you get inside. Totally wrong about steam cars. They were faster than internal combustion engines in fact one of them held the land speed record early on. The drawback was they needed heating up to start which took tool long.
only the Stanleys needed to warm up, the Doble design made steam almost instantly. Also steam cars have enormous amounts of torque :D
One held the land sped record probably because there were very little other cars.

So I have to check you on the steam engine portion. A steam powered car held the land speed record for a while, not to mention they are incredibly easy to use and maintain. The main drawback was the time it took to bring a car up to full power. It couldn’t just crank and run like a gasoline engine.
2019 and Mazda announced that rx-9 is coming and it'll have a rotary engine)))

@@antonlitvinau8142 "And since new engines die at around 150-200k, rotary might be pretty popular with the power and economy"
What do you mean by that? Usually piston engines last longer than rotary's. Rotary's wear out more quickly. Also, they use more fuel, so that doesn't help with economy very much.
I am not sure rotary engines can be improved above the level of piston engines, but they are trying.
nice
@@jort93z rotary engines don't really need to be improved at the same level of a piston engine. they are a niche engine in a niche car, people who buy an rx9 would no doubt be buying it to have a rotary powerd toy not an eco friendly daily driver.
ACTUALLY, turbine engines are used and praised in the military world, especially in the design of the M1 Abrams MBT. So technically, turbine engines did take off.
True, but as I understand it they still eat through a massive amount of fuel. Which is acceptable for a weapon of war, but not so much for a privately owned vehicle.

>Steam cars
>Slow
Dobles could reach 150 mph and would sit comfortably at 70. The _actual_ reason why steam cars didn't take off is because Henry Ford could make and sell his cars quicker and cheaper, meaning internal combustion engines became the norm and steam fell from usage in automobiles.
A Totally Ordinary Aubergine, at least someone here knows something.
