Backpacking Hemingway's Big Two Hearted River

- Join Miyagi, Trips, The Wanderer, Raspberry Al, Tiffany and Goose on a three day backpacking trip along the Two Hearted River in Michigan's Upper Peninsula along the North Country Trail, the longest national scenic trail in the United States.
Following his recuperation from an injury during his service in World War 1, renowned American Author Ernest Hemingway spent time with friends in Michigan's Upper Peninsula in the area of the Two Hearted River. This fall adventure in the year 1919 was later the inspiration for his famous short story "The Big Two Hearted River".
In Hemingway's stories he typically position nature as a source of refuge and rebirth. His characters are often shown retreating to the country in search of regeneration. On this adventure along the North Country Trail we would be seeking our own form of refuge and regeneration as we follow in the footsteps of one of America' greatest literary champions of the backcountry, Ernest Hemingway.

The story of the Two Hearted River was not based on his experience there.
It was based on the Fox River over towards the seney wildlife area.
He was wise enough to misdirect the masses.

Well done. Don't see many videos on that section of the NCT that are that entertaining. Drone shots, music and voice-over gave it a very professional feel. I've not seen the Duck Lake burn section like that.

I embrace the awkward! 😂 😂. The Wanderer is doing much better, thankfully just a minor sprain. I too have a great fondness for the NCT. Such a beautiful area and beautiful trail. Definitely want to do more trips up there in 2022. You need to join us!

If you have read the Big Two Hearted River, you will know Nick was on the Fox River just north of Seney and not the Big Two Hearted River. In the story, Nick has PTSD from WWI and ventures to the Fox to catch Brooke Trout. The area north of Seney had been burned and Nick used charred Grasshoppers to catch Brookies. Much symbolism and reflection on his war years. It's a must read before going into this area.

History, humor, ominous sights and sounds, this video is great! We had to plan a rescue mission once for a friend who hurt his ankle/foot on trail, that made an interesting adventure. Hiking in the rain can get old fast. We hiked The Foothills Trail this past summer and it rained 6 out of our 8 days there. Not just rained, but totally down-poured for hours and hours. Whiskey at camp and a brewery stop along the way, my kinda trip! Y’all look like a fun bunch to hike with!

To my recollection from my research on Hemingway, "Our Time", eve though based on stories of his youth, they were written in Paris in the early Twenties. I believe he and Hadley moved to Paris in 21, and "Our Time" was published in 1923. The burnt out town that the story was based on was Seney in Michigan I believe.
What you won't find is a swamp along a stream.

@16:00 wood duck. Also although hemingways story was called big 2 hearted river, the river described in his story is actually the fox river near the town of Seney in the UP, and not the river you guys were at. Sorry!

Wish you could have joined us on this one…brewery to start AND end the trip! Soooo awesome! The Lions Mane is my new favorite mushroom. Sautéed up with some butter it reminded me of lobster 🦞. Because I was able to pick a whole gallon bag, I had enough to dehydrate and I’ve been adding it to my coffee in the mornings. It’s got so many wonderful properties. I’d definitely do that trip again. It was a wonderful hike. The Wanderer had to bail but she healed up pretty quick. Fortunately only a sprain. Looking forward to winter now.
