Almost forgotten rhythm generator for just $70..? Featuring Doepfer A-151 Quad Sequential Switch

- In eurorack a sequential switch is one of the cheapest and simplest of modules, but I rarely see it used to create rhythms and textures, at least if I am to believe the multitude of eurorack videoes I have seen on UA-cam. This technique is nothing new, but overlooked I think in the myriad of possibilites offered by modular. I guess it can be called wave slicing. You can use the simplest and cheapest of switches and still get good results, for example Doepfer A-151 Quad Sequential Switch.
Consider giving the video a like - best way to support the channel! Peace ✌️
Love the tones around 2:23
I use one to create longer, and varying sequences by feeding different step sequencers in, and switching between them at varying intervals.
That's yet another possibility. Thanks for sharing!
that is a very good idea!
I love the passion in this man for eurorack. you get my like and my follow good sir!
Thank you! I needed to hear that.
Been messing with 4 LFOs going into a sequential switch as a trigger for Plaits. Currently don't have any of these modules so I've been testing it in VCV rack and it sound amazing. It's rythmic and a bit random
I really think there is much music to be discovered using this sequential switch method. Keep it up!
Excellent Video SS from Doepfer is simple utility with infinite applications
The Best part of Euro
I want to do more with the SS, so many possibilities. Thanks!
Great tip, with explanation.
Thanks.
Excellent video - I can see how I can use my Joranalogue compare 2 in a kind of similar way to generate textures. I had not thought of this before!
Thanks! The Compare 2 is on my shortlist, btw. Eurorack is rich in that you don't need fancy stuff to create interesting music. It lets you create fancy 'modules' by combining simple ones.
I use Compare 2 + A-151 to switch between different outputs of 1 or 2 oscillators at audio rate. New complex waveforms emerge. Lot of fun.
@@wariusgaiusThanks for sharing!
another great idea, thanks
Very cool mate 🫶🏻
Just grabbed one 2nd hand for 45€ mate! I can't wait to experiment with your suggestions! 👍
It is such a versatile module! Try to use the reset input for additional variety.
Great! And BTW I’ll put Scanned once again in good use as a source for such experiments like you have done!
@@cmnit61 Scanned is my favourite voice. ✌️
I actually ordered one but i really think of it as an arrangement tool
Very informative, thank you, just won yourself a new subscriber. Cheers
0:53 What kind of effect you are using?
Sounds psychedelic.
Aiihh... I see it says in video... My ears are bigger then my eyes, but I can see it now.
Yeah, I use what is described. Nothing more. Peace✌️
sequential switch is best module!
Best bang for the buck, imho.
headphones on, what do I hear in the back at 3:37 ?
Hehe... Before the recording my son was watching cartoons on the Disney+. I asked him to pause it while I was making a new recording, which took place in the living room. He was not pleased and sighed to express his impatience, I guess...
was wondering if that was a eurorack non-appreciator. . .
@@russ254 Hehe... A non-appreciator of having to wait for me to finish my YT recording, definitely...
i bought one and use it constantly, thinking or getting another another
Imho it's pretty close to the essence of eurorack. Two are not one too many.
Yeah, might be. Still fighting to understand a sequential switch :D so your video comes handy
Hi, take a look at this Reddit post of mine explaining the idea of using A-151 Quad Sequential Switch as a rhythm generator:
www.reddit.com/r/modular/comments/14sfr5x/almost_forgotten_rhythm_generator_for_just_70/?
exquisite pun
It is, indeed.
I have 3 A-151s in my system!
Warms my heart! 😁
@@axis_8 gotta make them boogalydoots!
well is it granular synthesis so yeah 😎
Hehe, you are making a point that's partly true (no pun intended) if every part of a soundwave is considered a grain. But not true if you consider the synthesizing part inherent to granular synthesis as this is all analog and played back as such, hence no synthesizing of the individual grains (unless you would maintain that the reverb is some kind of granular synthesizing, which it is to some extent, but then all reverberation using a DSP is granular synthesis). Personally I would rather refer to it as analog wave slicing.
@@axis_8 i see
@@axis_8 yeah true that makes a lot of sense i see nice😎
sometimes I like to leave a couple blank when using gates etc,,, so as to allow some space .
👍
erica synths used to make a 3hp one , I cannot seem to find it anywhere so I assume they're no longer making it
The only one they have at the moment, although currently out of stock, is the Sequential Switch v2, 10hp. It packs very interesting and advanced features. Worth checking out.
