- Chimanuka is a silverback who lives among a family of gorillas in Kahuzi Biega National Park in Sud Kivu, Democratic Republic of Congo. The rangers at the park are making noble efforts to conserve this extraordinary species, and I was lucky enough to visit in 2011. 8 people are allowed per day; the gorillas are habituated to humans; we spend one hour with them, and we can get pretty close as you can see. When we got to the clearing, we saw the gorillas up in the trees and I was amazed that I would be able to see them in the trees, so close. Then they all came down. This visit was in June 2011.
