    • The title Cakes and Ale (1930) is drawn from the remark of Sir Toby Belch to Malvolio in William Shakespeare's Twelfth Night: "Dost thou think, because thou art virtuous, there shall be no more cakes and ale?"
    • Decline and Fall (1928) by Evelyn Waugh is dedicated to Harold Acton.
    • Sword of Honour, trilogy by Evelyn Waugh include
    - Men at Arms(1952)
    - Officers and Gentlemen(1955)
    - Unconditional Surrender(1961).

Somerset Maugham ....who is fond of a bond ( of Human Bondage)1915 loves to look at moon (The moon and sixpence)1919 while watching he cuts a cake (cakes and Ale)1930 in its edge (The razor's Edge)1944.... 💕

Thank you mam. The tips you give in your lectures are really useful like now you told in this video that think about title. The Rozor's Edge title indicates Path to Salvation which is hard to pass over.उत्तिष्ठ जाग्रत प्राप्य वरान्निबोधत| क्षुरस्य धारा निशिता दुरत्यया दुर्गं पथस्तत्कवयो वदन्ति|| The Path to UGCNET is a Razor's Edge....Rise, wake up, seek the wise(Kalyani Mam) and PASS.

Maugham's "Ashenden" inspired Ian Fleming's James Bond series.
As you said, I was ever fascinated hearing Maugham's name at school but wouldn't make efforts to delve deep about his literary career because I was not much passionate about literature. Your lecture prompted me to read more of him on encyclopedia and make notes. I will also read some of his short stories again as a part of revisiting memories.

The Moon and Sixpence, a novel by W. Somerset Maugham, follows Charles Strickland, a middle-aged stockbroker who abandons his family to pursue his passion for painting, reflecting the life of artist Paul Gauguin. The story is narrated by a character who becomes fascinated and repulsed by Strickland's indifference to societal norms and personal relationships, as he immerses himself in his art, leading to tragic consequences, including the death of his lover, Blanche. Ultimately, Strickland finds a semblance of happiness in Tahiti, where he creates his masterpiece before succumbing to leprosy, leaving behind a complex legacy that challenges the morality of artistic obsession.

Bright Young People or Bright Young Things:
It was a nickname given by Tabloid Press to a group of
Bohemian young aristocrats and socialites in 1920’s London. They includes Anthony Powell (A Dance to
the Music of Time), Henry Green (Party Going), John Betjeman (A Subaltern’s Love Song), Evelyn
Waugh (Bright Young Things), and Nancy Mitford (Highland Fling)

We had Pristley's essay titled “ Lecture" in our course. Evelyn Waugh left Oxford without a degree and wanted to be man of the world , remained pagan for a time and wandered around with savages. Brideshead revisited is a movie available in web. It dealt with Catholicism surely and has gamut of characters. Thank you Ma'am. It's the best auditory revision 😌😌

I've read Maugham's Lotus Eater(short story) , The Kite (short story). Along with this The Moon and the Six Pence was prescribed there. The Kite is a very interesting story, depicting the relationship about a mother and son,and their oedipal complex. Now I'm going to read about J. B. Priestly and Waugh after this brainstorming session I'm more interested 💕

Thanks a lottt Ma'am...the video was so detailed despite being small, the way you mentioned the important points that can come in exam is literally amazing, I am so indebted to you; like while talking about ' Of Human Bondage' you mentioned its original title' Beauty from ashes' , and why the novel is autobiographical you said it too, summarising the main characteristics of Philip carey's personality, you have made the theme of his major works clear, like his cake and Ale, I was fascinated thinking how the second wife of Edward whose character is based on Thomas Hardy, may have reacted knowing who has been her husband's real inspiration, and in the case of Priestley I first time got to know about his being influenced by J.W.Dunne's theory of time, and that he also made a survey of western literature, and the name of his autobiography is so funny' Martin released instead of the trees', and while discussing Evelyn Vaugh, your mentioning of his satirical themes, his dealing with naive young men coming to realisation of what life really looks like, has made it easier to grasp the main tenets of his work, thank you so much Ma'am for summarising the themes of these writers' significant works.

    Dear all,
This is my success story dedicated to our dear Kalyani Mam.
I was attempting since 2014, everytime i lost in points difference.
I passed NET this time just because of our dear Mam !!!
I had reached a point in life where every hope ended, at an age of 29 still jobless and desperatly struggling behind my dream. I always dreamed to become an Assistant Professor in English.
One day, i came across Mams free UA-cam videos. I was financially not well enough to get paid online courses then. The videos helped me a lot to clear the concepts.
Mams explanations & examples, tips & motivation, all made the classes wonderfull!
Gradually i started attending Mams Everyday @ 8 & @10 courses, Udemy lecturers and studied almost all materials Mam provided.
The situations were not at all favourable. To be precise like many of us faced, exam center was at a long distance, computers jammed multiple times, questions were quite tricky. Besides these my parents were affected by covid during my exam preparation days.
However i did my best under Mams guidance & motivation.
Miracles occured on the result declaration day once i checked the site i couldnt believe my eyes. I passed !!! That feeling is really great! My life changed exactly from that moment. All the past pains vanished for future smiles.
I attained this just because of Mam. Every year Mam has a bunch of successful students who spreads her fame and make her proud.
This time i am really blessed to be one among them to share with you all my success story dedicated to our dear Kalyani Vallath Mam.
Thanks a lot Mam for being the guiding light amidst the encircling gloom in our lives.
May God almighty give you all blessings to continue your mission of enlightening young souls towards wisdom in the coming decades ahead !!!
I am 100% sure that many of you will be writing your success stories here when next NET exam results are announced.
We are all really blessed to get such an inspirational teacher to guide us.
May God Bless You all to attain your dream very soon!!!
