"WIBN" was the B-side of "God Only Knows" in the UK in 1966. It didn't chart separately, which must be why you thought it wasn't released as a single there until much later. That's how it (eventually) achieved gold certification, combined with the later reissue.

Thanks, I was aware that it was the GOK B-side and did speculate about that possibility in the video, good to have more clarity.

Bell also invented the electric sitar. Amazing east coast studio guy. Oh, he also developed a way to get that "watery" sound on a guitar. It's prominently heard on his single, Airport Love Theme by Vincent Bell.

I wonder if any of the later versions of WIBN ever attempted to re-create the accordions? I don't recall any. You cannot really capture the song's magic without them.

Great question. I remember on the session I did in Jerry Cole I used an accordion *patch* on a synth which obviously is a poor substitute, but it's something.

So grateful for these deep dives from a bonafide expert. Why Adam was not interviewed for Disney+ will forever confuse and disappoint me… thanks Adam!

I'm pretty far off the reservation to be attractive to Disney! :) I appreciate the kind words very much, and I have a lot of bonafide experts helping me look good, for whom I am grateful.

Like many, I never realized how complex these songs were until I watched your videos and High Castle Conservatory's videos. Thank you for the education.

I got a lot to wade through before we get there, but yeah, looking forward to getting into '67.

Could not agree more with you regarding the greatness of WIBN. I have always felt it was Brian's greatest moment on record, it has everything in spades, it is so complex but people think it's simpler than say, Good Vibrations. I remember hearing it in concert in the first half of the '70's, people would go nuts, which made me very happy. Great work on this analysis.

one more thing: probably unless you are a musician/composer and a good one at that you are not able to grasp how great WIBN is.

Re: Wouldn’t It Be Nice. Would the easier playability of doing it a full tone down be as much of a factor as the easier vocal range in their live performances?

    • @karmafrog1
      @karmafrog1  3 місяці тому +1

Probably, though it would usually be a half tone. A lot of people (including I think the BBs) did/do perform it in E instead of F for both reasons.

@@karmafrog1My bad! Yes, they did play it in E.

Having grown up with this music and taking it for granted, it's interesting to later learn how complex and ingenious it was musically.
One of my hobby interests is UFOs, mostly the hardware aspect of it, but of course the literature includes many other topics/genres with no clear dividing line on the slippery slope between what is clearly true and what is clearly bizarre or even terrifying. Keeping an open mind, I've pretty much read it all. Sometimes I ran across some stuff that seemed so odd yet innocuous, that it's hard to see how/why someone would make it up, as a sort of aside. The example relevant to your own work, was a "contactee" saying that the particular race/society they met, had found the most amazing things about our own accomplishments/society, to be how advanced our music was. Much more surprising and advanced to them, than our science, technology, weaponry, art, etc. They said our music was what distinguished us as being "special". They implied that some/many/most societies out there have not developed something similar, or maybe not until they were much more advanced than we are. Obviously impossible to prove or confirm, but something to think about.
I was a good high school musician, and am a music lover. Despite having heard all sorts of music and been to countless concerts, I still am in awe to see a band's instruments on stage, with nothing pre-programmed about what sounds they will make, and then the band members walk out and create great music from that. So, imagine what someone who didn't have music in their own society, would think of it. Even a deaf person who suddenly is cured, has more of a clue about what will be coming at them, from having seen a drummer, and been able to tap/drum themselves, and feel it.

56:30 Couldn't Carol Kaye's logbook from Jan. 24 be from an overdub session? Or for another song that was partially recorded on Jan. 24?

Excellent, intelligent analysis -- a welcome change from the emotive hyperbole that typifies commentary on this album.

18:11 This is something I don't understand about Brian as composer: writing figures that are easy to play on keyboards but very difficult on guitar. Surely Brian knew of this discrepancy. He seems to have devoted little to no time thinking about how his songs would be played live. I know Brian didn't know much about guitar, but he certainly knew the bass, and based on that knowledge, could have figured out how to play the intro to WIBN on the guitar without putting so much pressure on Carl to get a very difficult phrase correct on live performances. So Carl "dumbs it down," but really, it should have been written that way to begin with. I think it was somewhat selfish of Brian to not take into consideration the guitar parts when composing everything on the keyboard.

The Dolby Atmos mix of Pet Sounds, mentioned on the top right hand part of the screen, is very good on headphones. But the other Beach Boys albums in that format on Apple Music (the early 1960s stereo albums, Carl and the Passions, Holland) definitely need a redo. At least on headphones, I don't really hear an Atmos effect, and the same goes for almost all of the 3-CD Sounds of Summer.

really informative video! nice.. so rarely beach boys analysis actually go into the music itself, those strange chord progressions the Boys use, the unusual but beautiful vocal arrangements and the peculiar arrangements. In all fairness, all Beach boys music is somewhat weird, Pet Sounds too. But in a great way.
Check out how complex the BV's to wouldnt it be nice are:
