In this video, we will discuss craniosynostosis, a condition where a child's head shape is asymmetrical or different from normal. The skull consists of multiple bones separated by sutures, which normally stop growing by the age of 3. Craniosynostosis can occur if there is a skull fracture during birth or head injury before the age of 3, causing the affected bone to fuse prematurely. This can lead to a disproportionate head shape and potentially affect brain development. To prevent brain development issues, surgery is recommended before the age of 3. By removing a small portion of bone and creating space for growth, the child's head shape can be corrected, and normal brain development can be ensured. After the age of 3, surgery can only address the size and shape of the skull without significant impact on brain development. Early surgery before the age of 3 provides the most benefit.
