Said to be the world’s oldest extant full-length novel, The Tale of Genji was written in the early 11th century by Murasaki Shikibu. With her brush, she tells the story of the various loves of those surrounding the “shining prince,” Hikaru Genji.After a wedding arranged for political reasons, Aoi-no-Ue (Lady Aoi), the principal wife of the young noble Hikaru Genji, becomes pregnant with his child. Meanwhile, the high-born Rokujo Miyasudokoro (Lady Rokujo), who is the consort of the crown prince (the future emperor), falls in love with the younger Genji and is consumed with the desire to have him all to herself. While endowed with intelligence, culture, and beauty, she is prevented from frankly conveying her feelings by the perceived drawback of being older and by her pride. Her self-repression turns into intense jealousy, and she becomes a vengeful spirit who possesses Lady Aoi in a twisted expression of love… The story is a grand drama of love and hate, infatuation and sorrow, unfolding in the Heian period of ancient Japan. It is gorgeously brought back to life by the OSK Nippon Revue Company as an elegant picture scroll whose scenes can be glimpsed through the lifestyles of the characters. Boasting a history of 101 years, the Company is one of Japan’s leading all-female musical theater troupes. Enjoy the world of the narrative while entering into the sentiments hidden in the breasts of the characters, even on the dazzling stage using images on an approximately 500-inch screen installed at the venue.
