I have to say that this is a very good idea Lilly, I do convexes two ways myself one is just to sharpen it by hand on flat Venev stones which literally takes forever to get the edge right but the second is very similar to your method as I used 3M aerosol spray adhesive and sprayed the back of my sandpaper after cutting it to roughly the size of a bench stone and then I stuck it to a piece of 1in thick foam from an Amazon package I had received and I ended up making one for each grit of sandpaper that I use but I'm still sharpening by hand where you're on the guided system here... Great minds think alike hahaha oh and my APO1T came incredibly sharp for a factory edge but I still stropped it anyways with Gunny Juice and got it much-much sharper although I still have not yet had a chance to really take it out and get some good use out if it yet...

I've used a knife to make a living, when I first started working. 15 years as a meat cutter/Chef . One thing I can tell you is,... trying to sharpen a knife and carelessly whetting it across a Stone, or sand paper, at the wrong angle will nearly ruin a great knife! If you can't hold that perfect angle, it won't be sharp.. And, it could actually be even more dull! Keeping the razor thin edge perfectly straight is the only way to get it done right... The edge is so thin that you can't see it, ...you have to 'feel' it, with the fingers..
Files and dowel pins work well for stylish blades that have inconsistent contour. Heavy gauge sandpaper grit, works well.. although using an oiled stone works best. Great video, Lilly. You do an excellent job explaining the proper way an 'Bring-back-edge'
You would be an amazing Teacher 😉👍

Hi Lilly! I got my APO-1T tracking knife from Canadian Prepper about a week ago. My only suggestion for improvement is to replace the simple belt loop on the sheath with something like my APO-1S has, which has two snapping straps that work with MOLLE panels. Otherwise it is absolutely totally awesome! Thank you so much for creating such an amazing knife!

I struggle to sharpen knives with stones. I have a couple ceramic rods that help me achieve a razor edge. I have seen your jig demonstrated on other YT channels. The trouble with the jig is that it requires a bench. In the field a stone and ceramic rod is still the best option for keeping a blade honed. I like your jig for restoring or establishing the proper angle. Good video.

    • @maxwell9734
      @maxwell9734 Рік тому +3

The jig sharpening, actually teaches you how the proper angle feels...
When using it, (at the workbench) fully focus on your angle, and how it feels in your hand and wrist. A good sharpening should last a long time. Ceramic rods don't sharpen a knife, they merely straighten up the edge but no actual sharpening takes place. Sharpening, requires removing a little bit of the blade. You wouldn't need the jig every time you sharpen your knife, but hand sharpening takes practice..

Mine is being delivered this week. WOOHOO!
Double-sided carpet tape could make this whole process easier.
It's actually a Mors Kochansky hack he did with a piece of wood and sandpaper for a cheap hand-held high grit stone... He said you can even remove and replace the sandpaper a few times if done properly.
Just don't get the though carpet tape with strands of strings in it like I did... get the flat stuff.

Good instructional video. I sharpened mine the old way with whetstones by hand. (I have done this before with multi-grind knives). It sharpens easily. The balance is good overall. It could have been heavier toward the tip for chopping, but then it would not have handled as well for work near the handle end. Good compromise. I really love the G10 handle.
I forgot to mention that I ordered the knife from Canada, and it arrived within a week. That was a quick delivery time for international. Kudos to the dealer, Canada Preparedness.

It's good to know that the APO-1T (Tracker knife) has a convex edge.
For most of my knives I use a Smith's CCKS 2-Step Knife Sharpener ($3.98), mostly using just the fine ceramic side and rarely using the coarse carbide side. This way I'm always guaranteed a consistant angle. I find it far more comfortable holding the blade as opposed to making the knife stationary and using this type of sharpening jig. It seems like it would be far too easy to create inconsistant angles. To get the convex edge is obtained via the leather strop to roll off the very fine burr. I've watched other videos and they are going down to about 1,200 grit sandpaper for their final stage before they go to the leather strop, sometimes they're using green polishing material which people use for their buffing wheels.
I used to sharpen knives as a small business when I was a teenager in terms of sharpening people's kitchen knives, something my dad taught me how to do by his large sharpening stones. I know how to make a regular blade very sharp and there are several tests you can use to test a blade's sharpness: 1) the fingernail test, 2) cutting a full circle from within a sheet of magazine paper, just cutting strips of paper doesn't really tell you if it is at its sharpest. The fingernail test will tell you where along the blade there are any dull areas. You draw the blade across one of your fingernales (pointer finger works the best on your left hand if you're right handed), if the blade falls off the nail at about 70° angle then you have a dull portion at that point in your blade. I hope this information is helpful.

I got my blade a little over a week ago & I love it ! Highly recommended, well worth the investment. I have done my study on the steel of this tracker knife (aus8) while some will argue other steels are “better” I can only agree that each steel is better under certain circumstances. The aus8 steel is a defense steel in my best terms will not rust easy, will sharpen more smoothly than others, however has the strength to last for tasks the steel is designed to burden. The APO-T knife is a well round knife that is not cheaply made the best aus8 knife on the market I say again much appreciated.

Amazing video, thank you so much. I’ve been looking for a decent way to sharpen my new tracker knife, & im very intrigued by your amazing sharpening skills, seriously 👍🙏😎👌🙏🔥🔪💯
I purchased mine specifically for throwing, like in the movie, “The Hunted”, and also, for daily wearing👍.
But, the guy sent me a 10” inch tracker knife, and 11” inches with the back-sheath 👍 And not only is that to big for daily carrying, but its not discreet at all, the complete opposite honestly….lol…
Going forward…lol…so I happen to know alot about knives, myself honestly. And, I know that with tracker knives for throwing, the blade end should weigh more than the handle end always. Thus with how gravity works, & also how it works with heavier weighted side, (sharp end of knife), it will usually always hit your target, blade first, like clock work,& almost always creates success with throwing tracker knives that are made correctly like this, & like special forces tactical knives editions 👍💯🔪🔥
If you’ve got any more awesome advice please & thank you, that would be very helpful,& wicked cool, thanks. Also, where can I buy this sharpening set up please? Cause my sharpening tools aren’t able to correctly maintain this knifes blade the right way.
Great video, your wicked appreciated 👍👌🙏😎

Lilly! What a brilliant idea to back your sandpaper with foam to get a convex edge! I use the worksharp belt sharpening system to get a convex edge but I’d like a manual method, like yours. I really like the jig you found, do you have a link to it at Amazon?

I sharpen my knives, with other knives. Really, I don't like my knives too sharp. I only have one sharp knife in my house, and it sits in its own drawer with those rotating amber beacon lights and a klaxon that goes off when I open the drawer. It's so sharp, if not carefully used it could split a beer atom.
