I have to say that this is a very good idea Lilly, I do convexes two ways myself one is just to sharpen it by hand on flat Venev stones which literally takes forever to get the edge right but the second is very similar to your method as I used 3M aerosol spray adhesive and sprayed the back of my sandpaper after cutting it to roughly the size of a bench stone and then I stuck it to a piece of 1in thick foam from an Amazon package I had received and I ended up making one for each grit of sandpaper that I use but I'm still sharpening by hand where you're on the guided system here... Great minds think alike hahaha oh and my APO1T came incredibly sharp for a factory edge but I still stropped it anyways with Gunny Juice and got it much-much sharper although I still have not yet had a chance to really take it out and get some good use out if it yet...
No not the knife the machine is what I am asking about what is it called I have very bad hands and can't use a stone anymore ....
Does it work well on sharpening axes
*_Just know now how to care for and sharpen the right knife. Thank you, Miss Lilly. Greetings from me_*
Lily has a work bench that Santa would admire.
Are you kidding? It's exactly what I asked Santa to bring me !🤣👍👍👍
I've used a knife to make a living, when I first started working. 15 years as a meat cutter/Chef . One thing I can tell you is,... trying to sharpen a knife and carelessly whetting it across a Stone, or sand paper, at the wrong angle will nearly ruin a great knife! If you can't hold that perfect angle, it won't be sharp.. And, it could actually be even more dull! Keeping the razor thin edge perfectly straight is the only way to get it done right... The edge is so thin that you can't see it, ...you have to 'feel' it, with the fingers..
Files and dowel pins work well for stylish blades that have inconsistent contour. Heavy gauge sandpaper grit, works well.. although using an oiled stone works best. Great video, Lilly. You do an excellent job explaining the proper way an 'Bring-back-edge'
You would be an amazing Teacher 😉👍
Hi Lilly! I got my APO-1T tracking knife from Canadian Prepper about a week ago. My only suggestion for improvement is to replace the simple belt loop on the sheath with something like my APO-1S has, which has two snapping straps that work with MOLLE panels. Otherwise it is absolutely totally awesome! Thank you so much for creating such an amazing knife!
I love the masking tape and marker technique you demonstrate here, Lilly! My father was a U.S. Marine, and a very intelligent, clever man. I think he would have appreciated many of your ideas. I still have his razor sharp K-Bar knife, circa 1945. Thank you Lilly!
Thank you so much❗
From America
Lilly is awsome. I love her style. Wunder schon.
Good evening from Syracuse NY USA my friend thank you for sharing your skills
Hi Lily greetings from Brazil. I liked this knife. Im like your vídeos. Your Chanel is excellent thanks.
Smart and Pretty !
Great looking blades !
Thank You Lilly !!!
I struggle to sharpen knives with stones. I have a couple ceramic rods that help me achieve a razor edge. I have seen your jig demonstrated on other YT channels. The trouble with the jig is that it requires a bench. In the field a stone and ceramic rod is still the best option for keeping a blade honed. I like your jig for restoring or establishing the proper angle. Good video.
The jig sharpening, actually teaches you how the proper angle feels...
When using it, (at the workbench) fully focus on your angle, and how it feels in your hand and wrist. A good sharpening should last a long time. Ceramic rods don't sharpen a knife, they merely straighten up the edge but no actual sharpening takes place. Sharpening, requires removing a little bit of the blade. You wouldn't need the jig every time you sharpen your knife, but hand sharpening takes practice..
Thanks lily cool tips 👍
I used a 1/2inch wooden dowels and taped various sandpapers to sharpen my kukri concave. I even glued some leather around a dowel and charged it with green compound as a rounded strop too.
I use a lansky jig.. have stones with grit all the way up to 2000 grit. Has a leather attachment to finish your blade off.
Hey Lil! Never seen this methode. But it makes a lot of sens for me!! I will try it out. Servus Horstl 👍
Glad to see you putting up a video.
Hadn't seen anything from you lately and was getting concerned considering all the Craziness going on over your way. 👍
Well done! Good tips on a cheap solution to expensive stones. On my leather strop I use a little jeweler’s rouge polishing compound to enhance the edge even more. A little goes a long ways.
Which if you look at her strop she uses the same or similar
Mine is being delivered this week. WOOHOO!
Double-sided carpet tape could make this whole process easier.
It's actually a Mors Kochansky hack he did with a piece of wood and sandpaper for a cheap hand-held high grit stone... He said you can even remove and replace the sandpaper a few times if done properly.
Just don't get the though carpet tape with strands of strings in it like I did... get the flat stuff.
Excellent demonstration and technique Lilly. I hope that you will visit your super shelter for an overnight soon my wife and I have enjoyed all your visits from the beginning. Happy Trails. Merry Christmas
My APO-1T has arrived. This thing is a beast!
Thanks Lilly
Good instructional video. I sharpened mine the old way with whetstones by hand. (I have done this before with multi-grind knives). It sharpens easily. The balance is good overall. It could have been heavier toward the tip for chopping, but then it would not have handled as well for work near the handle end. Good compromise. I really love the G10 handle.
I forgot to mention that I ordered the knife from Canada, and it arrived within a week. That was a quick delivery time for international. Kudos to the dealer, Canada Preparedness.
Canadian Prepper sits in Canada. So that's why the delivery was so fast
I've never made blades as sharp as when I got my paper wheels.... look them up. I never realized too sharp was a thing. Wow! Nice trick with the 240 grit sandpaper. 👍
Your videos are great information to us Lilly!! We love it!!
After all these years I never thought about tapping the blade to prevent damaging the finish, thanks for the information, I'm going to start doing that.
Received mine a week ago, outstanding blade!!
nice video, important to keep knives sharp
Lilly, stay safe, warm and fed.
A new video is up 👍
Good to hear from you. I was thinking about you and all this morning.
I would highly recommend getting a ken onion with the blade grinding attatchment. Makes sharpening recurve blades & trackers super fast & easy as pie.
This was informative and relaxing. This will help me improve my tools for general work and save others for emergencies. Thanks 😊
Dear Lilly, I just received your APO-1T knife. I love it! You are the best!
To get an even finer sharpening paper. Look for 3M lapping paper. Lapping paper is used to put the finishing honing on precision parts, mirrors, lenses for rifle scopes & telescopes. The Hubble telescope in outer space has focusing mirrors that were lapped to a extremely fine finish.
I got the assortment pack. That . 5 micron... Talk about a mirrored edge. I can widdel hair with any knife when I'm done using that.
Nicely done Lilly, you teach me a lot!
I thinking you need to look for the book "Razors Edge Book Of Sharpening". It will teach you alot. I'm 63 and have sharpened knives all my life. THIS book taught me TONS, when I first read it some 35+ years ago.
Knowing you sharpen knives like that kinda scares me. In a good way 👍
Thanks!
This is the best sharpening technique I have ever seen.
Thank you Lilly for the video. I already have the jig now I will build those sharpening stones!
Hey Lilly! This is perfect, we have watched a few knife sharpening videos over the years and have been debating which way that we prefer, but this method we can understand and totally like. Thank you for putting this together and keep up the incredible adventures.
Look into paper wheels. I don't sharpen.... I polish them to razor sharp in under 5 seconds. Sadly I learned about paper wheels at 46 years of age.
@@hidesinlonggrass3229 thanks mate, we will definitely check it out! Its never too late to learn, if your not learning your dying...kind of crude but we are always trying to learning something new.
As usual, very thorough and detailed.
Well Lily I will save this. I have been following your channel off and on for several years and that is a beautiful knife that you’ve designed. It’s a little too complex for anything I would use it for but definitely a beautiful knife. The sharpening system that you’re using in your video what is that. I might like to see if I can find something like that here in the US.
Seems Lily's skills align with that of good outdoors people in Tennessee Kentucky and Ohio. I vote to nominate her Honorary Midwestern American. Cheers 👌🙏👏🇺🇲
Brilliant sharpening system Lilly!
Thank you Lilly ,, going to buy one ,,, keep the awesome videos rolling , blessing of safety and excellent health
Very lovely and extremely clever lady explains every thing beautifully. Thank you for your efforts !
I just received my APO-1T. It feels very good in the hand, I can't wait to get this into the woods. I liked the urban carry bag vid. Keep up the great work.
Hi Lilly, I got one of those but I have buy the stone from china 😅(dirt cheap) which are really bad, way to soft, only good for polish! 😂and the plastic ball Bering that the guiding rod go in you can buy a metal one which is smoother. take care! 😀
Looks like an excellent sharpening tool.
Nice work on the sharpening; I know how difficult sharpening knives and carving tools can be. 😊
Very nicely done! I just might have to get myself a sharpening jig like that. I love the look of the tracker knife. Wicked design.
Excellent how-to-do video. Wonderful that you used simple tools that don't cost a ton of money.🏆
Use a WorkSharp Knife and Tool Sharpener and you'll get a nice convex edge in no time. Once you get the hang of it, you can control the degree of convexity at will by adjusting the belts and angles.
I want a sharpening chick in my basement as well!! 😂 Just kidding! I like the idea with the sandpaper on foam. I think this should also work without the jig which makes this the perfect portable sharpening solution? Kinda sounds like something to patent ^^
Lilly you are so clever very nice sharpener video 😊
@ 0:38 where top of holder clamps
to the rod is flexing. Get you a spare
rod and bend it for sharpening
convex edges. For not having
the right tools you do very well.
Thanks Lilly. Great video
It's good to know that the APO-1T (Tracker knife) has a convex edge.
For most of my knives I use a Smith's CCKS 2-Step Knife Sharpener ($3.98), mostly using just the fine ceramic side and rarely using the coarse carbide side. This way I'm always guaranteed a consistant angle. I find it far more comfortable holding the blade as opposed to making the knife stationary and using this type of sharpening jig. It seems like it would be far too easy to create inconsistant angles. To get the convex edge is obtained via the leather strop to roll off the very fine burr. I've watched other videos and they are going down to about 1,200 grit sandpaper for their final stage before they go to the leather strop, sometimes they're using green polishing material which people use for their buffing wheels.
I used to sharpen knives as a small business when I was a teenager in terms of sharpening people's kitchen knives, something my dad taught me how to do by his large sharpening stones. I know how to make a regular blade very sharp and there are several tests you can use to test a blade's sharpness: 1) the fingernail test, 2) cutting a full circle from within a sheet of magazine paper, just cutting strips of paper doesn't really tell you if it is at its sharpest. The fingernail test will tell you where along the blade there are any dull areas. You draw the blade across one of your fingernales (pointer finger works the best on your left hand if you're right handed), if the blade falls off the nail at about 70° angle then you have a dull portion at that point in your blade. I hope this information is helpful.
Hello Lilly.I thought you sick.Glad to hear from you.your advies is money in the bank.Your sharpening tool seems great and I will buy one soon. Thanks.
Great tutorial Lilly 👍👍😎
Lilly, do you have a link to the knife sharpener? Keep up the great work!
Here you go: amzn.to/3h0ryH1
You're the stuff, Lilly! Thanks for all you teach and share.
Nice Job Lilly!
You can go up to a 3000 grit with the sandpaper which will give you a more polished edge. I use a 2500 grit belt on my 60 inch belt sander but I need to get at least a 7000 grit belt to give it a more sharper edge. Good to see your practising your skills mate
Years ago I bought the 'Block Sharpener'. It made my life much easier.
I got my blade a little over a week ago & I love it ! Highly recommended, well worth the investment. I have done my study on the steel of this tracker knife (aus8) while some will argue other steels are “better” I can only agree that each steel is better under certain circumstances. The aus8 steel is a defense steel in my best terms will not rust easy, will sharpen more smoothly than others, however has the strength to last for tasks the steel is designed to burden. The APO-T knife is a well round knife that is not cheaply made the best aus8 knife on the market I say again much appreciated.
Lily could you show field sharpening? Maybe even using natural ressources?
Very nice method. Thank you.
Great job.
Great video thanks. Great knives too.
Gran video!
Gracias por los consejos bella Dama!
Saludos.
Outdoors55 posted a video years ago using 3M Trizact P3000 3000 grit foam backed auto body sandpaper. I bought mine at Advance Auto parts. I use it in my knife sharpening kit. You can also buy it on Amazon for under ten bucks. You get a few sheets in the package. They offer different grits. I use it as a strop.
Hi Lily, love your accent.
Thank you Lilly I have this sharpener and don't know how to use it
Love your gloves in that thumbnail
Thank you Lilly. 👍😁
Amazing video, thank you so much. I’ve been looking for a decent way to sharpen my new tracker knife, & im very intrigued by your amazing sharpening skills, seriously 👍🙏😎👌🙏🔥🔪💯
I purchased mine specifically for throwing, like in the movie, “The Hunted”, and also, for daily wearing👍.
But, the guy sent me a 10” inch tracker knife, and 11” inches with the back-sheath 👍 And not only is that to big for daily carrying, but its not discreet at all, the complete opposite honestly….lol…
Going forward…lol…so I happen to know alot about knives, myself honestly. And, I know that with tracker knives for throwing, the blade end should weigh more than the handle end always. Thus with how gravity works, & also how it works with heavier weighted side, (sharp end of knife), it will usually always hit your target, blade first, like clock work,& almost always creates success with throwing tracker knives that are made correctly like this, & like special forces tactical knives editions 👍💯🔪🔥
If you’ve got any more awesome advice please & thank you, that would be very helpful,& wicked cool, thanks. Also, where can I buy this sharpening set up please? Cause my sharpening tools aren’t able to correctly maintain this knifes blade the right way.
Great video, your wicked appreciated 👍👌🙏😎
I'm sorry Lilly, you'll do fine. We will pray for your well-being. Thx for telling us
Girl can sharpen a knife 👍
Oh my Lilly your so dreamy lol lots of love little lady good job girl
Hi,lilly I watch all your videos there very helpful, would you be able to let me know the name and make of the jig you use in your convex sharpening video many thanks Richard
Those are some nice looking knives.
That Tracker knife is almost as pretty as the girl who made it. 🥰🌹
Lilly, you are great!!
May God bless you and your family
Thanks for this...
Have you considered removing the swedge from the design? It would make the knife much more durable in the tip area and assist in batoning capability.
I want a fine tip that I can use for gutting. If you take care of it it wont break
ur fantastic! 😍love you and ur videos 🎯
Great vid, helpful 👍
Survival Lilly is awesome. A thrill to listen to and learn from. (Great Naked and Afraid)
An essential survival skill is being able to sharpen your knives and axes with nothing more than stones and strops.
Got my APOS 2 dsys ago. Thank you.
I used to work in a Slaughter house we used Sharpening stones
That’s cool.
Great video❤
תודה!
Lilly! What a brilliant idea to back your sandpaper with foam to get a convex edge! I use the worksharp belt sharpening system to get a convex edge but I’d like a manual method, like yours. I really like the jig you found, do you have a link to it at Amazon?
Good job sis👍👍👍
I sharpen my knives, with other knives. Really, I don't like my knives too sharp. I only have one sharp knife in my house, and it sits in its own drawer with those rotating amber beacon lights and a klaxon that goes off when I open the drawer. It's so sharp, if not carefully used it could split a beer atom.
I have that exact same sharpener now even I can sharpen blades
Lilly, you are totally amazing! Can I come over and use your workshop?
