Did Disney FORCE Lucasfilm to CANCEL The FAILED High Republic?

- After losing 95% of readership, it's being rumored that Disney is forcing Lucasfilm to shelve the dying publishing initiative. This doesn't bode well for Star Wars or the upcoming Acolyte series.

Only one thing can save Lucasfilm now: a massively expensive marketing campaign for "The Acolyte," coupled with millions of mass-produced, uninspired toys that no one will ever buy or play with.
C'mon, Kathleen! Don't change horses midstream now! You're so close to crushing it! 🤣
Yeeeeees, DEW it, Kathy!
Hell yeah! I'm thirsty for new content to c00ns00m

Sounds about right. She's so close! Surely she'll hit it big this time!
Yeah, crushing Lucasfilm
Imagine taking a girls franchise like Barbie or Disney Princesses and trying to make it a boys franchise. It would turn the girls off and boys still wouldn't want to buy and play with Barbies. This is what Disney have done with Star Wars and Marvel but in reverse.
Exactly !!!
After the Barbie movie, I say do it. Turn Ken and friends into action heroes while Barbie is busy with her hundreds of careers trying to find herself. Plenty of opportunities to make a story out of that, and it can't be worse than TLJ.

Every time I hear about one of these failed projects from Lucasfilm I’m absolutely shocked by the budgets involved, how can they have spent a billion dollars on a series of like 12 books?! It’s unbelievable how poor their cost control is, I mean seriously where is that money going? I get that publishing isn’t cheap but there’s no way I can believe that’s a reasonable price for that project!
My guess? Kathleen Kennedy is embezzling money Disney earmarked for 'Star Wars' projects, on God knows what- Ferrari supercars? luxury beach side condos? hookers and blow?
They are basically looting the company. Spending what they can before the suits realize the entire staff is incompetent.
Probably some Steven Seagal style money laundering, alongside basic incompetence in budgeting.
Wouldn't be surprised if a lot of movie/TV show money was pushed into the high Republic budget to hide the real cost of failure
Gotta pay those rooms of story writers despite being worthless hacks
It's not Star Wars. It's "women of all human colors versus evil men" while LARPing in the SW universe while the extent of the creativity goes to a f'ing sentient rock named Geode.
Aboard a ship named... "The Ship". It seems like parody.
The only woman who has made both massive wealth and blockbuster fame in fantasy is JK Rowling and they hate her.
I called it in Mandalorian s3 ending.
All women's main characters are good, and all male main characters are bad.
My best friend who loves Rebels denies it because of the main character in Rebels is a boy, but still.
Yep
The canceled EU book The Heart of the Jedi sold more print on demand books than all The High Republic combined.🤣👍
Got two copies of the HotJ
When heart of the jedi sold more than your entire high republic series you know you done f'ed up.
HotJ isn't even a real book. Its nothing but terrible fanfiction, and you can't really compare the salse since it released AFTER, not at the same time nor before LotJ.
@@JoKoBodfan fiction? Dude it was literally a completed EU novel that wasn't released.
@@JoKoBod It’s true that it wasn’t officially released but it was originally commissioned as part of a two-book and accompanying comic series by Lucasfilm prior to the Disney purchase. It’s far from fan fiction and the writer was finished writing the manuscript in 1992 but didn’t hear anything from Lucasfilm until 1995 when the book and comic series were canceled due to problems with the other writers. It was put on the internet in 2015 when Joe Bonjiorno edited it. In 2021 unfortunately Disney-Lucasfilm decided to squash it when they found out it was beating their High Republic series into the dust.
The writers for the other book in the series never finished their novel and I don’t think the comic series was ever written either. However certain elements were used in the sequel trilogy like Artoo having a backup of Threepio’s memory and Threepio becomes a badguy until he gets his memory back and the rogue imperial element is very similar to the First Order.
I agree this book is a bit rough in places but it’s better than the worst of the EU and infinitely better than High Republic. With a proper polishing and tweaking it would fit nicely in the EU.
Last Star Wars thing I bought was Jedi Survivor, but because I loved the last game, I couldn't care less about it being connected to Star Wars, because as soon as Lucasfilm make a show based on it, they'll shove Kal Kestas out of the way, turn him into a bumbling idiot/coward, then have him play second fiddle to some terrible written mary sue that they've just made up and shove down our throats and shame us into acception, otherwise were all bigots/-ists for not liking.
Ello’ you! yeah, at this point getting attached to anything Star Wars is like being in an abusive relationship.
How would you rate that game?
It’s funny how people say things like this like it’s actually happened before when it hasn’t.
Yep
Looks at the M-She-U
Male characters are all replaced by women and poor acting.
Good. Twice the woke, double the broke!
Brilliant and well said!!!!
Lucasfilm: It's not for you.
Also Lucasfilm: Why is no one buying it?!?
I hope this is true. That would mean that even Disney is realizing that woke doesn’t have a big enough base to be profitable.
YUP
Kathleen Kennedy has been put on "Gardening Leave" and 5 Lawyers and accountants are now in charge of Lucasfilm, answering directly to Bob Iger. Rumours/leaks are there are some financial shenanigan's with missing and/or misappropriated funds. Possibly leading to criminal charges. A lot of it surrounding the High Republic show "The Acolyte"
Disney been realized it
It's not just the current population size. The movement became a purity contest. Even the people that are into it now will eventually leave because of the toxic environment. So the customer base is bound to get even smaller with time.
But what about the Barbie Movie's success?
I'm sick of people with the mentality of college sorority sisters writing Star Wars.
I know of female FANFIC WRITERS who write better work than all the "professionals" Kathleen Kennedy hired for Lucasfilm- combined! Your statement is an insult to college sorority sisters, just as calling Kathleen Kennedy "dumber than a rock" is an insult to rocks.

Charlie Brown: “a rock”
Diveristy twice. Representation. Anti-war. Dinosaurs. That's what they had. This entire endeavor was fucked by that infamous whiteboard (and more correctly by the kinds of people they staffed that room with).
This project never had anything beyond 'representation' of various essentialisms and 2020s social politics as an impetus -- which could never be functional. They didn't start with a burning story to be told, or a wandering mythos to unravel, a cast of charismatic and complimentary characters. They started with a checklist of what they wanted to see in star wars..... so they set about inserting all of it into star wars and wagging the IP around to accommodate it. Unsurprisingly .... trash came out.
Please don't give Disney any more ideas of what they can still destroy in the franchise.
The thing is that while this is a era of peace you can have the Jedi going after smaller enemies. Regional crime syndicates, pirates, corrupt government officials, etc... there are enemies to be had against the common order that is the Republic. You can take for example a Jedi and their padawan through these scenarios and met exotic outer rim aliens that are all but unheard of in the core territories that could easily provide a viable challenge in facing.
The fact that LucasFilm had this much fodder to work with and the budgets to make it happen and still fail is so hard to believe. This is beyond incompetence, this is planned malice at work.
It could be the type of story where we follow a master and padawan as the former teaches the latter how to handle different situations throughout the galaxy, giving us an idea of how the jedi think and operate, as well as what different settings and cultures are like outside of wartime. Easy worldbuilding right there! It's not that hard, disney.
So.... the Jedi Apprentice series that chronicled the adventures of Obi-Wan Kenobi and Qui-Gon Jinn that followed when Qui-gon first took him as a padawan up to Episode One.
There was also a similar series that chronicled the adventures of Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker in the same vein between Episodes 1 and 2.
@@theguybehindyou4762 its hard when everyone hired has no creative talent for expanding the lore in meaningful ways or writing & designing characters beyond a reflection of real world sociopolitics

"It's not about the money, it's about sending a message."
I read the first HR adult & young adult books. Geode, a rock that can pilot a ship is up there. The stupidest thing I read was the Jedi igniting their lightsabers inside the cockpits of their aircraft in order to power them up and use the weapons systems.
Wait a minute so your telling me that the Jedi discourage the making of blasters that use Lightsabers to power them, but Star fighters using Lightsabers as therapies power source oh no that’s fine. The Darth Vader comics came out before they High Republic and they didn’t understand their own canon enough to ensure this wasn’t a thing. WHAT IS THE MCU AFTER PHASE 3!

Thats literally the majority of SW. Prequels the event was inevitable because EP4, 5, & 6 happened. The Old Republic and Dawn of the Jedi nothing happened because it doesn't overall impact the plot of the outcome of the movies.
@@JoKoBod But there's actual conflict in these timeframes and everything has some effect in the future movies. The end of the old Sith leads to the likes of Darth Bane creating the Rule of Two which eventually brought forth the rise of Palpatine who then invoked the Sith 1,000 Revenge Plan against the Jedi, destroying the Republic and founding the Empire. What could there possibly be that's of ever even slight importance in the High Republic timeframe?
@@death-king1834 Rebuilding the Republic for one and reinventing lost technology from the Dark Ages of the Republic.
There's also considerable rebuilding that needed to be done given how the Sith Rampaged across a destroyed galaxy which would also result in a lot of archeological digs that may result in Jedi getting involved or unleashing Force Horrors into the galaxy. You think those Jedi temples we've been raiding across multiple games like Jedi Knight and Fallen Order just 'happened' to place themselves for the sake of convince?
Also there's already an entry into the High Republic Series before the High Republic was even a thing. The Jedi Apprentice series which chronicles the life of Obi-Wan during his years as Qui-gon's padawan.
There's a lot they could do with the High Republic but you're right in that they squandered it.
Just proves your intelligence level. Everything has to lead into what you know. Bro what?? The Nihil win😂😂😂 the old republic stuff has no hold on the films at all besides loose connections that are vague as hell. It’s almost like the High Republic having characters you know in them. I bet you’re pissed that Han doesn’t mention death troopers in ANH. Almost like it’s all fan fiction to begin with.
It's utterly laughable. They were really pushing for this to be like the next Shadows of the Empire like all the way back in the 90's, and the idea of comparing Shadows of the Empire with the likes of the High Republic is like comparing the works Shakesphere to I Am Not Starfire.
Shadows of the empire is awesome
@@patricklechner1I agree.
@longtsun8286 personally though I also liked The Force Unleashed games
On the inverse, why Shadows of The Empire succeeded was that it was spearheaded by a filmmaker (Lucas) who marketed it as if it were another movie with tie ins like a novel, comics, a soundtrack, video games, a toy line, everything except the movie. It was fresh, it was novel, it was innovative, and it worked. There’s none of that coming from The High Republic. Much like with the rest of LFL, their goal seemed to be, “Make a bunch of stuff, slap the Star Wars label on it, and watch the money flow in”. And it didn’t work because there was no plan or strategy out side of BRAND RECOGNITION!!
I still have the Steve Perry novel, and am regretful I didn't buy the comic book side stories when Dark Horse Comics still had the 'Star Wars' license. Prince Xizor remains an AWESOME villain, one worthy of facing off against Luke Skywalker AND Darth Vader.

I still watch the theatrical OT and Indy trilogy. Re-read the Zahn trilogy recently. They can never ruin those.
I’m now 50 and I use to love seeing that LucasFilm fanfare you would see at the beginning of Star Wars. Now…I shake my head and roll my eyes.
When the books came out most of them were placed on the shelves already discounted from the recommended price and the price just kept falling until they were either sent back to the publisher or sold to a discount store. The High Republic was a failure before they even released the first book
Oh, I did buy a few new books not too long ago. And by "new" I mean older than I am: the original trilogy books, that were released in the '80s, in quite good condition. The three of them cost me 2 dollars, total!
Imagine for a moment, Disney SW had released a tour de Force (pun intended) of awesome great SW movies and TV series resulting, particularly in the current environment of many entertainment franchises committing suicide, SW being white hot. Then they opened a SW themed hotel that would create an experience that made one feel closer to SW without being hokey or too crazy expensive. They could have kept that thing filled forever. Would have driven business to the parks, sold merch, etc. etc. etc. Instead, here we are and only the dumbest (Disney management) doesn't know why.
Look at the consequences that have been wrought from genuinely believing that you have Great Power with no responsibility to the Consumer.
The High Republic needed a video game at launch.
The multimedia projects like Shadows of the Empire and The Force Unleashed were huge successes.
The problem with Disney is that the brand is for kids and war isn't in the Disney brand so I was expecting them to try to star wars without wars not realising kids like Sci Fi with war.
It's not a stretch. The Galactic Starcruiser Resort is shutting down. The "High Republic" sales fell by 95% since launch. And while new movies have been announced, there's no actual work being done on them. They also cancelled a ton of other previously announced movies.
I think everyone in Hollywood knows that, as a financial matter if nothing else, Star Wars needs a reset. Sure, some material from the Kennedy years will be kept, but they're clearly trying to axe most of it. Getting rid of the High Republic is like taking out Italy in World War II. Getting rid of the "sequels" is like taking out Germany. Getting rid of everything else woke in Star Wars (most of the live action shows and the Resistance cartoon) is like knocking Japan out of the war.
As for the resort going down, that's like taking out one of the lesser Axis powers, such as Romania, Bulgaria, or Hungary.
Imagine writing for the greatest sci fi IP in the world and selling 500 books. And the Acolyte-don’t get me started.
The fact that these budgets are so different, but they are all telling the same story for the most part. Women good men bad, forced diversity, and wokeness.
High republic was Disney trying to do an Old Republic, without all the interesting lore, conflict and interesting characters.
If this true, it was truly the Will of the Force.
Honestly, they could’ve avoided this issue by just simply starting a book initiative dealing with the Old Republic. You know, back when there were still WARS among the STARS - I mean, that’s why it’s called STAR WARS.
No, this was better for one reason.
You wouldn’t want them to ruin the Old Republic like they did the original trilogy characters.
@@EternityKingdomsHeadHoncho Fortunatly most modern star wars writers don't know anything out side the original trilogy time period. If you asked them what they thing of reven they'd probably go 'who'? Wouldn't be surprised if all they know about the old republic is the SWTOR mmo.
Well it lasted longer than the starcruiser hotel at least. 🙃
An old mmo SW Galaxies (legends) revived my fandom, I suggest giving it a try
The High Republic, more than anything else, probably represents KK's vision of what Star Wars should be.
It sure is the least Star Wars so you're right.
I'm in the camp of not understanding why the "high republic" was even a thing when we already have KOTOR and the like.
I agree that it’s time to end Star Wars. Nothing of quality is being produced anymore, and it’s waste of everyone’s time and money. Star Wars had a good run: We had the original trilogy, revenge of the sith, the Thrawn trilogy and the rest of the expanded universe, the 2003 clone wars series, and the KOTOR and SWTOR games. But all good things must come to an end.
Please destroy all of it. Let Star Wars die with what little dignity it has left.
"Smell the Force in the morning" - so true. Writing the fanfic, waiting for releases, collecting the toya..that's gone.
Its like playing with your Star Wars toys when you're a kid and then your Mom forces you to play with your younger sister. Your sister wants to make it more fun for her, so she makes up more female characters and comes up with stupid plot ideas that only a girl would care about. Then, she invites her friends over and they come up with even more stupid, woke ideas and eventually take over your toys. That's how I view the Star Wars franchise.
Imagine working just to fill up your ego... I want a job like that, god-like protected plus unlimited money.
1. I have not read the high republic.
2. The character that is a rock.
3. I have no interest in the acolyte.
The only thing I would buy from Disney is the 4K original theatrical release of the original trilogy. Otherwise, Star Wars and Disney are dead to me.
I work at a book factory, have for ten months now
There’s a display case in the front lobby that showcases some titles we’ve ran there, there’s all the Harry potters, some cringe politician books, but there’s also the first high republic book

I've read 6 High Republic books. They do have villains, the Nihil, which are space Vikings, but they're not the most interesting villains ever. The books themselves were pretty mediocre and soulless. I didn't hate them for the most part, but they're not must-read material. The exception would be Midnight Horizon, which seems well-liked by High Republic fans, but for me is the worst Star Wars book I ever read.
I read light of the Jedi, into darkness, and test of courage and I really enjoyed them. Didnt even know it was some big publishing push thing, just happened to find it on an audiobook app after thrawn left me salivating for more star wars books.

They were refusing to pay authors royalties
@@patricklechner1 of course another great move by Disney and Lucasfilm

Well, Disney has already demonstrated to the world that they're not very smart, so...
It's pretty clear by the fact they are refusing to pay royalties to EU writers that the canning of the EU was purely ego based. They could have easily just kept them on the payrole and putting out new books but Dinesy would rather make 20 cents by them selves then making $500 but split it.
They can keep Lucasfilm as long as they get Kennedy and the Story Group to leave. She and the people loyal to her are the only ones standing in the way of Favreau & Filoni righting the ship.
My wife got me a free copy of Star Wars high Republic, I took it to a used book store, they wouldn’t take it. I eventually just gave it away.
Everything about this series is off. The muted, Earth tone color scheme, the blatant far-left agenda, the watered-down Force, the over-use of lightsabers, and the paper-thin characters who are obsessed with their feelings. It truly is quite an embarrassing mess.
Hey fellow SW fans ( fans of GL, the OT and the EU) , it’s pretty easy to let go . And I’m a lifelong, memorabilia buying comic video game reading fan . I found 40k and Warhammer fantasy . I’ve been loving all of it . Look at that thumbnail , only time 40k has done that is with their crap sisters of battle marvel comic . May the wokeness die in the vine
Instead of writing these books they could’ve adapted any of the books into a series like heir to the empire or the bane trilogy and most people probably would be happy with that
Im so apathetic to SW i didnt even want to play the Kal kestus games because it STILL leads to the sequels
I used to love The 6 films, although I definitely only truly enjoyed Revenge from the prequels, Episode 1 and 2 had parts that I liked and parts I didn't. I was addicted to the EU from the first time I read my first book that I could find.(Jedi Academy Book 1 because they didn't have the Thrawn trilogy in at the time, had to backtrack later). I didn't necessarily enjoy everything that I read it to the same degree In later novels, but I loved that it all fit together. It was one giant cohesive storyline that multiple authors worked on in the collaboration of sorts.
It honored the development of these characters that we loved, introduced us to new charait's that we grew to see as part of that Universe that we loved. It was marvelous overall.
I still see the EU and Lucas's 6 filas the only legitimate Star Wars. I don't dislike characters like Ahsoka, or Captain Rex, But characters like this are the exception not the rule.
I haven't been excited for a Star Wars project since the last jedi showed me my worst nightmare as a fan, and the only joy of any kind I felt associated with the brand was knowing that Kennedy hated us because we kept rejecting her crap material, And feeling Glee every time something Disney Star Wars went down in flames.
Everything Disney touches deserves to fail, somebody pass the popcorn, because that failure? That I'll watch.

I actually forgot about this series until u made this video. Wasn't most of the High Republic geared toward younger readers as opposed to the old EU books which were heavily enjoyed by adults?
Well it was split into two groups: Books for young adults and books for younger kids. Both are failing.
Pre-TPM stories in the EU: Tales of epic wars and legendary Jedi and Sith that have gone on to become fan favorites
Pre-TPM stories in Disney canon: Hey, everyone, this ship's navigator is a giant rock

Please please please sell back starwars to George. I miss the old days of good starwars and less real world politics leaching into all these shows and projects. They had an Icarus with the mandalorian but flew to close to the sun with season 3. Book of Boba was a mess. All the others were just too boring to even watch. Rip starwars.
What they also need to learn is that one good movie isn't going to inspire faith in the franchise again. Bare minimum, they're going to need to take the High Republic out of the IP and rip the Star Wars name off of it to even begin to earn back faith in the brand.
