This is officially the most underrated OST I know, the gender blending, effects & textures, influence from different eras and enjoyment this game's soundtrack offers is TOP TIER. Didn't know this game existed, how many more amazing games and soundtracks are we missing on?
0:00 - Intro
1:34 - What the heck is Katamari Damacy?
2:45 - Katamari On The Rocks
11:31 - The Wonderful Star’s Walk is Wonderful
15:43 - Lonely Rolling Star
22:04 - A crimson Rose & Gin tonic/Gin & Tonic & Red Red Roses
29:34 - Katamari of Love
This is merely for review, analysis, breakdown and constructive criticism purpose, I do not claim the audiovisual product I reacted to as my own.

The Katamari games are niche, but anyone who plays them has them seared in their brains forever, and that goes for the soundtracks as well. The second game's OST was not only just as wild and wonderful as the first, but it also has really fun references to the original with Extremely Strange remixes, like one made entirely with animal noises, or the main theme, Katamari on the Rocks, redone entirely with just one guy beatboxing every instrument.
I would recommend looking at the lyrics for Katamari of Love specifically, it has a very direct message, one straight from the director's heart.
The level it plays on is also: the credits, in which you roll the moon across the Earth, _collecting all the countries together._
What these things communicate is truly heartfelt.
Oh hell yes Katamari's ost is one of the best. Hell any ost done for a Keita Takahashi game is wonderful. Jhulian if you ever get the chance take a gander at the main theme for the new game "TO A T".
The only song I would've wanted you to hear that you didn't is Katamaritaino (Roll Me In). It's such a great jazzy vibe, extremely well performed too. Definitely my favorite track in the album.
Also, fun fact, Crimson Gin and Tonic was apparently sung by a 70 year old woman.
To be honest, you haven’t heard of it before, because everyone that hears it gets totally and inescapably absorbed. Good to see you’ve joined us.
angel rain from katamari is really really good song
I frequently listen to Lonely Rolling Star, ultra banger
The vocalist in "A Crimson Rose & Gin Tonic" always gave me Betty Boop vibes, I wonder if that's what she was going for.
Katamari is a heck of a trippy, unique and pretty unforgettable PS2 game, the sequel is even better. I don't think I have ever played another game like the Katamari games. Yes, I remember the music very well as well as just how wild the game was. The first song was the title song, and the second the kind of hub world area song if I remember correctly.
And you can play them on current gen consols and pc now I think?
When it comes to underrated soundtracks I'd have to recommend the soundtrack for the game Everhood. It's still a pretty new game, but both game and soundtrack were imo very underrated ever since they released. The soundtrack offers a very wide array of interesting and sometimes very unique songs and (apart from one song which is intentionally made as bad as possible) it has pretty much just good songs through and through
everhood has a fantastic soundtrack
I absolutely loved these games as a kid. 15 years later I listened back to the soundtrack and realized it had been etched into my memory. I’ve never heard anything like this in any other game soundtrack. It’s a mix of strange but iconic electronics with a massive range of styles, yet it’s all recognizable as unmistakably Katamari music.
Fun fact, just about every song in the series is a love song, but with a Katamari motif. They sing about rolling around together, or becoming a single star in the sky, or whatever. (For a kids game, some of the innuendo is pretty explicit lol)
It’s the best OST ever
Good choice!
I had written a long comment describing first where each track was used, then the uses and names of the other soundtracks of the franchise (then Firefox crashed in an act of harsh cruelty and sadism). I have now written an even longer comment out of spite, and now I'm using an external text editor for safety.
This is where these tracks are used:
- Track 1 from this video is used in the animated intro of the game.
- Track 2 is used in the menu of the game, which is a rotating 3D planet you walk on from which there's objects representing the options of the game and each level available. There's actually more than one planet you fly onto, to fit the rest of the objects, and you spend a bit of time on them.
- Tracks 3 and 4 (as most tracks on the CD and the recent vinyl release) are used as songs which are matched to some levels on the game. The music has to match the level and be enjoyable and not repetitive. So due to the amount of levels, 9 tracks on the soundtrack have the purpose of looping, alone, on a level (there is not only 9 levels but none of the songs are even remotely boring).
You should check out the rest of the soundtracks. All of them have different music directors but are specifically designed to keep the spirit of the game; however this doesn't stop them from introducing new stuff.
- The soundtracks have completely different names to the games (this one is "Katamari Fortissimo Damacy").
- We Love Katamari's soundtrack, named "Katamari wa Damacy" is waaay more out there than the first soundtrack, but it follows the same format and has the same spirit.
- Me & My Katamari's soundtrack "Katamari Original Soundtrack Damacy" has a large amount of cutscene music and spans two discs. Some of that music was used on We Love Katamari, and music from the first two games was featured on this game as well, mainly due to the game being released for the PSP instead of the PS2.
- The soundtrack for Beautiful Katamari "Katamari Suteki Damacy" has the first half dedicated to main tracks, and the second half dedicated to cutscene music. This release
- Katamari Forever is a tribute to the rest of the franchise, and so its soundtrack "Katamari Takeshi" consists of two discs containing loads of remixes and covers by established (and kind of niche, and yet extremely fitting) artists. Almost all of the covers and remixes are very stylized and severely removed from the original version (as most good covers and remixes are, but these are amazingly good).
- Touch My Katamari has the CD release "Katamori Damacy" (that's how it's spelled) with the main tracks;
- a second digital-only release "Touch My Katamari Original Soundtrack 2" with the other tracks;
- and a third release "Katamari Adventur Damacy", - also correct title - digital-only as well, is a three track EP which however still contains one of my favorite tracks from the franchise, "Kakatatamamariri 2" which goes straight to harsh electric-guitar based rock (with energetic kawaii vocals of course).
Touch My Katamari is the last original release, and only recently NAMCO has decided to create PC remasters for the first two games, so we haven't seen new music since 2012. However, due to the first game getting a remaster, "Katamari Fortissimo Damacy" saw a vinyl re-release as "Katamari Damacy Original Video Game Soundtrack" with new album artwork. That's pretty much it though.
This is a strange recommendation but the pvz soundtrack is exceptional it also has an amazing jazz remix called reeds and seeds both are worth checking out
YESSSS BANGER
Absolutely love this ost, seriously hope you continue 😭
Lonely rolling star was kind of a small internet sentation when the game came out if I remember. Toby Fox absolutely has heard this song before. Especially given his humor lol
Oh man, guy's gotta do Que Sera Sera if he hasn't already
I was hoping for the children choir theme, it's beautiful. But I'm happy this soundtrack is reaching more ears anyhow!
Also 32:35 partial Undertale theme!
I found lonely rolling star from a game on roblox 😂
塊魂の音楽は最高や!
Forgotten game ? Shadow hearts covenant
Theme : battle in europe
"is this english or japanese?"
modern japanese: *laughs in katakana*
