Hello, welcome to another installment in Green Frog's trackside travels mini video series.
Join Green Frog videographer Chris Wehman as we explore big time modern railroading. This episode will feature the crude oil trains that have become a mainstay across class 1 main lines throughout the United States.
We'll look at oil trains primarily in Indiana and Ohio, but we'll catch some oil train action in other places as well.

Why is there always a hopper car between the lead units and the oil train unit and then a hopper car between the oil train cars and the pusher loco?

Those Hoppers are Buffer cars for safety reasons, keeps more distance from the Loco's!

Can you explain why a random freight car is between the engine and the tanker?

Typically this is a standard Railroad practice to Buffer cars from the Locomotives which would have Hazardous or Flammable Materials, Gases or Liquids in them.
