Being US Army - Retired, I’ve been asked many times what was the “hard” part…. I finally realized it wasn’t necessary what we did, it was the conditions… aside from the Physical fitness… the suffering.. heat, cold, sleeping on the ground, no showers, greasy, dirty, clothes being foul, lack of sleep, smelling like diesel and dirt… all at the same time.. just being uncomfortable! You have to learn how to make discomfort a friend you know… Not the guy you call to hangout but he’s tolerable. Embrace the suck… was a common. Phrase.

I'm crippled. My right arm is almost useless. I put up two canvas tarps and make a tent. Then use my cane too get off the ground. I make my upside-down fire. Here's the thing. Don't engage. I did martial arts 30 plus years. But I got major arthritis. I'm practicing old school stuff with survival. My buddy comes with me that is 74 years old. The two cripples help each other. So it's fully struggle and we don't give up. One trip it got super cold and knocked the lean toos down lots of times with high wind. So we slept in the van and got up and made a tent with the tarps. I'm 53 and I have no surrender. Even after my last upside-down fire was fully wet I through all my fire making stuff on it. My buddy kept saying give up. No. I got that shit going. Then we sat around drinking our beer all night. I even used the embers too start a fire in the morning.

I would appreciate more specific perspectives on older folks. I am retired medical with 35 yrs mixed martial arts, prepped, live in the country on a large lake and can shoot the butt of a gnat at 300 yds. I bench 369 but I've had 2 heart attacks and arthritis in my ankles and can't run.

You sound like a stud! Maybe you have a few years under your belt but I’m guessing you are still quite active and doing all you can to be fit and ready for whatever life throws at you. We all have a list of issues. As we get older that list typically grows longer. Keep moving forward. Do everything YOU can to stay fit, mobile and healthy.

There is guy I know who is grumpy all the time. But one thing that is always in the forefront of my mind is no matter now grumpy I am or how much an event sucks, I know one of two things are going to happen. One, the suck is going to end and I am going to get some great life lessons out of it or I am going to die. But either way the suck is going to end. So I give the suck a big ole hug and smile, and whisper in it's ear. "Bring it on, either way, I win." Then I laugh.

I tell my friends about me and my friends outdoor adventures the adventures of Shayne and Dom the very tall hobbits from the Lord's of the rings. Us barely sleeping because of major bear country too rain setting up camp. He wants propane grills and shit. I'm like we don't need it.

Again no real mention of advance medical knowledge and education. Great having a will to live but you need to be alive so need to protect that with medical knowledge and skills.
Oooo Nothing is bigger than my life and I need to keep that alive. You stated that Hypothermia is a nice way to go. Not really. but Advance Medical knowledge gives you the skill to recognise the onset of hypothermia and how to treat that and get back to your supposed reason.
