Thank you for the video! I went to Home Depot (Canada) and found an inexpensive outdoor intermatic timer. Model P1121. Opened it up and it has the correct motor/gears for the repair. My Arrow is running like charm! 👍
Man, thank you so much for this video! I have a Rainsoft water softener system with this time controller from 1997 and the timer on it went out CW190-1. Took it a part just like you did in this video and sure enough, the plastic teeth are starting to crumble. I just ordered a couple of TN111C's and hopefully I can get the parts I need out of them. The Rainsoft distributor is quoting me over 2500 bucks to upgrade the head with a newer updated timer. Looks like I will be able to fix it for 30 bucks which was the price for two of these TN111C's! Stuart, thanks so much for this video. Our D8 Kit Kat electric clock that I purchased for my wife in 1990 in Halifax was almost a goner. It was making a grinding noise and for several years it had sat idle as I had kind of given up on it. However, while being snowed-in and going stir-crazy I was looking for a project, so I decided to have a crack at fixing our old friend, the Kit Kat clock. After taking the motor apart I discovered that the little gearwheel that you describe (2:53) as "the most common failure of these Intermatic clock mechanisms" had deteriorated to the extent that it looked more like dried grease than a gear. When I poked it with a needle it crumbled - it didn't even resemble a gear wheel! After watching the video and taking apart an Intermatic lamp timer that we very rarely use, I was able to extricate the exact gear wheel that was needed. It was a very simple job to replace the disintegrated Kit Kat clock gear wheel with the one I removed from the lamp timer. My Kit Kat clock is working perfectly again!! Thank you again, Stuart for your video!!! (One note: At 3:36 you show the replacement wheel with the stem sticking out and show that the disc (oiler, or spacer) at 3:44 can be removed to allow room for the wheel with the longer stem to fit. I found that the long-stemmed wheel would not fit even with the disc (oiler, or spacer) removed. After close examination and gentle poking with a needle again, I discovered that the little gear wheel I needed (2:53) would lift off the axle (pinion) and could be simply slid into the original wheel. I was then able to use the original wheel and spacer with the new gear wheel. - I hope that all makes sense! 😄) In any event, thanks again, Stuart for your great video and for sharing your knowledge!!

After ordering the wrong motor replacement, and looking at a week to get the right motor, and paying twice as much as the other, I found your video and realized we had an old intermatic timer sitting around (I could've trashed the wrong one I bought but I'll send it back) so I tore it open and fixed it just like you showed. Love it!
I just replaced the one of the motors (WG1573-5) in my Intermatic pool pump timer panel (T10404R). Out of curiosity, I opened the old motor up and its problem is exactly what you described. My replacement motor was just over $20 from Amazon and so I didn't need to go inside of mine to do this repair, but it is nice to understand this. I may also try to find an inexpensive timer and replace the gears in my broken one so that I have a spare on the shelf. It sure would be nice if these little parts could be purchased directly so as to not create so much waste. Thanks for your nice video.
Absolutely amazing! I was dumbfounded how easy this was to repair. Took me about 15 minutes to do the whole repair. I even had 2 of these old timers in the house. Sacrificed one to the sprinkler g-ds. Than you so much. You saved me $51.00 at Home Depot!

I have old clock radios that use this motor. All had that nylon gear that was chewed up and worn out with broken teeth. Although more expensive, some sellers on eBay sell these with metal gears instead of nylon which should last forever. I've gotten some and they work great. These motors can be somewhat noisy though so I put plenty of grease on the teeth to help them run quiet.
Great. My timer wasn't working for two days. (Intermatic T103 purchd 2014 for the pool pump) Took the clock out today, and the small gear was gone. Don't have a clue where it went. I see teeth marks and pasty yellowish waxy substance where that gear was. I was just ready to order the entire clock. $19 to the door wg1573-5E) cheapest. Too bad too because I gave the entire timer and box I removed to Goodwill. Could have had the clock gear in there. Old one was T103. Clock gave out. Was 3 years old when went out in2014. Now I'll do some rummaging through my new stuff and take it apart. I have 3 intermatic timers two new 1 used a bit off and on. 110v indoor wall plug in for when we go away for a few weeks to turn the lights on in the house. That's a good tip. Thanks.

Great video. Will try it out. My Intermatic Malibu outdoor landscape timer/transformer stopped working. I am certain it is the timer. It just completely stopped working, but the lights come on manually, so it is the motorized timer. Had it for 15 years. Guess it had a good run while it lasted.
My older Malibu(15yrs old) is doing the same thing now. Synco motor too weak to trip the timer settings. Not sure its the gears. Motor was pretty warm when I opened it up. Cost of a new Malibu timer - if you can find it it outrageous! The part # on mine is WG2000 - not finding that specific motor. I plan to contact Intermatic to see if that has been replaced. Finding all diff part #'s - just not WG2000
Hey Stuart, I have been living in the same house for 36 years and I buy a new HW40 timer every 10 years, This year it got excessively noisy so again I buy a new one. When I turned it on it vibrates the case to such an extent that its annoying. Sounds like a 60Hz hum that vibrates the case. Usually you can't hear the motor they are so quite. Not this time. The motor is the WG1573-5E. So I returned it to Amazon and got another one. Re-installed and the same noise comes back with the replacement. The motor vibrates so that you have to push real hard on the timer mounting plate then the noise subsides until you remove your finger pressure. I'm beginning to think this new motor is a lemon. Should I go back to a previous version like the WG1573-5 or earlier? Hate to be picky but this timer controls the hot water for the MBR bath and is only 10 feet from my bed. What do you think I should do?
@@allanlang6515 I stopped dealing with these motors years ago but the most common cause I recall is the metal cover in the motor may be vibrating. If you can run the motor outside the device you check. Sometimes I had to bend the pins a little tighter.
Just went to Home Depot and bought the Intermatic TN111K indoor lamp timer and it had the motor inside. Perfect replacement for my Malibu low voltage lighting transformer.
TN111K comes with the pinion disk with the elongated neck. I missed watching 3:10 and used a Dremil to knock it down instead of removing the silver disc. TN111K comes with a WG2030 motor (not a WG433-3 I used the modified pinion disk to fix). The two motors definitely have different output gears. The video was a great help in fixing my pool timer. Keep up the great content.
Great vid. In my case my (Malibu low voltage lighting timer)WG2000 synco motor, not the gears, may be at the end of its life. I thought it better to just replace the motor. Problem is finding the WG2000. Im guessing different numbers mean different speeds for the timer? Yes- prices of new timers are ridiculous so why not repair what you have.

@@StuartNC It was a TN111, but the fine print had the 154TN1798. I've got a TN111c coming. I only lost $5 on the other, plus it was fun to rip it apart. There was another difference. I had to pull the knob off the front to remove a screw hiding underneath it. Also the gear isn't really plastic. It looks and feels like urethane. Maybe it was an attempt to make them run more quiet? I don't know, but I can see how it wouldn't last forever.
@@hastypete2 right I call it plastic but it’s probably something else. There are metal ones out there but very hard to find. The gear lasts much longer when used continuously as in a clock. If it’s in a device where it is frequently turned on and off it fails sooner in my experience.
They still make these timers and they still have the same motor. The ones that don't use this motor is either very very old or made by someone else and branded intermatic.

Stuart - I understand that these nylon gears deteriorate from age, and not so much from use. So isn't buying an old timer only going to get you another nylon gear that may already be near failure? How do we find a timer with a metal gear?
I bought many timers over the years and have not encountered a problem with new (old stock). The used ones were almost always bad. I don’t know where to find it in metal but I don’t think it’s necessary. .
Stuart.... all of the sudden the motor in my Time Machine rolling ball clock has started running BACKWARDS. instead of scooping up the waiting balls from the underside, the rotating arm is approaching from the top and then jamming itself against the ball chute. Is this an indication that something broke inside the motor? If so, will the replacement part be found in one of the Intermatic timers with TN in the part number? Thanks... from another Stuart (in Asheville NC).
You would need to open the motor. Assuming it’s the type of motor you see in the video. If you look at about 0:50, the gear on the right has a metal arm under it that determines which way to spin. You can spin it with your finger. Lift it up and reposition the arm until you can spin it the other way with your finger. Yours apparently jumped out of position which can happen after a jam.
Stuart, somehow, the motor started on its own to rotate in the correct direction again. I discovered this while I was opening up the ball clock's plastic case to access the motor inside. A few days have now passed and it is still working correctly. I'll try following your instructions (thank you) if the problem reappears.@@StuartNC
I think I found a motor based on your video so THANKS BUT the beer sign had the full motor removed and I need an end that has a straight slot type gear to attach it to the sign so it turns. Any ideas out there?
@@wwarmuth1313 they’re using parts from other motors but if you’re missing the whole motor you need to find the original. If it’s a beer barrel sign it usually needs the 1450 which has a unique output shaft. I’m not sure where to get one. I got out of this clock business a few years ago.

Matt Plavin you can get the parts on eBay if you search on arrow ball clock. Yeah you won’t find the old version at Home Depot or Lowe’s anymore.

I bought a TN111 from a junk shop and the gear in it was even mushier than the one in the clock. Which models are newest?
As long as it was a sealed blister package I never had an issue with any of them. Used ones are always mush.

Stuart, somehow, the motor started on its own to rotate in the correct direction again. I discovered this while I was opening up the ball clock's plastic case to access the motor inside. A few days have now passed and it is still working correctly. I'll try following your instructions (thank you) if the problem reappears.@@StuartNC
Intermatic still using metal motors on its timers, just look for timers made in Mexico, if they are made in China they will have a plastic motor.
Hard to find in Europe. Seems my 70's clock is done for good.
Yiroooo if it’s the parts you see in my video the 120v version of the part will work.

I think I found a motor based on your video so THANKS BUT the beer sign had the full motor removed and I need an end that has a straight slot type gear to attach it to the sign so it turns. Any ideas out there?
I think you need to find a WG-1450 motor for the beer sign.
@@StuartNC Because of needing the end or a different reason? I saw below people did fix their beer signs with the timer motors.
@@wwarmuth1313 they’re using parts from other motors but if you’re missing the whole motor you need to find the original. If it’s a beer barrel sign it usually needs the 1450 which has a unique output shaft. I’m not sure where to get one. I got out of this clock business a few years ago.

Or you could contact Intermatic and see if they'll send you a new pinion gear. They came with lifetime warranties.
They will not send or sell you that part.
