Ive been riding fixed gear since the early 70's I'm 62 now and still ride fixed gear. I've always loved the pursuit bars and the mustache bars but I can't find them anymore been looking for years now. You have me a fantastic laugh that narrow bars with the pink grips i had on a fixed gear many years ago the exact same bars and grips lol. Memories lol. Keep on fixie riding ill keep riding fixed till I can no longer ride
Lane splitter bars were the funniest trend I followed back in the day cuz what on earth and I threading the needle through that’s more narrow than my cranks let alone my whole body
If one is lane splitting one might need to tilt the bike to dodge side view mirrors. Narrow bars enable one to speed through the gaps before the space between vehicles gets even more dangerous. Best application is for bicycle messengers in big cities.
Another discipline not mentioned is hardcourt bicycle polo. Narrow bars enable a more natural swing of the mallet when passing or taking shots on goal.

I absolutely love all the different sub genres and styles of cycling! I come from the MTB and roadie world but there are so many types of fixie/bmx setups that I didn't even know existed, bicycles are truly an art of self expression!
I really love my mustache bar! The cool thing besides the look is that the grip width also makes fit more aero when you hold the bar close to the stem and more straight when you hold the bar near the ends, which are closer to the saddle
Roadie here so I obviously run drops but when it came down to building my winter bike, I took a long hard look at my beloved cyclocross and checked off whatever I didn't use on my crappy winter ride. I found an old alloy frameset the same size as the CX and close in geometry and set about replicating it in winter mode. First thing to go was the drops, you never seek aero when barrelling down a snowy street! So I found a combo of bullhorns and stem that nailed the riding position of riding on the hoods on my summer bike and got rid of a bit of useless metal in the process! They also make my winter bike look super aggressive and fast (though it's not!) I love the bullhorns!!
My approach riding in Winnipeg winter is to switch to drop bars because it's SO much windier without leaves on the trees, plus I'm now presenting a much larger surface area with my winter clothing - nothing worse than pushing harder than you need to and getting sweaty in the cold. The slightly lower center of gravity seems to help too. Just presenting a different perspective - when it comes to winter riding, you gotta find what works for you. 👍
I haven't road in years but I remember riding lane splitters in like 05-06. It was such a goofy concept but it was fun. It made tire grabs pretty easy but I definitely ate it all the time from missing the bars on barspins.
I use the “weirdo” beach cruiser looking bars, but I cut the ends down so I can thread through traffic. I can bar spin with them. But it can hit my knee when I’m doing a backward circle sometimes. For a while I was living on the edge no bar tape and bar ends i was very worried about getting cored. Luckily that didn’t happen. Thank you for the video, the weirdo bars are cool too me, looks dynamic but is actually slower. Also can grab the middle. I always only wanted to ride sparrow bars and I’m now living my dream.
I've been riding fixed gear for the past 2 years, when I started drop bars and bull horn is my go-to but before i didn't like to do tricks but now riser bars is what i've been using for 8 months now and its very comfortable and doing tricks is way easier than drops. (i've converted into tracklocross for 3 months now) the only downside is doing sprints and climbs is harder. Ride safe y'all
My favourite bars for fixed is definitely risers with flats coming at a close second. I tried drops but I am not comfortable riding in the drops or hoods. Gonna definitely consider some bull horns later on. Great video as always! #bullhorncomeback
When I first got a road bike I hated the drop bars cause I always felt like I was about to fall and bust my teeth the next second. So when I got home (I rode the bike back home, the most terrifying ride ever in my life) and I didn't have any money to buy different bars, so I got a literal tube and swapped it for the drop bars. Good times, as things started getting broken I swapped parts for more reliable and unbreakableish parts and that slowly got me to fixed gear bikes. It was an old second had roadie that was falling apart, a bad purchase but it's what got me into fixed gear
ive been loving the velo orange crazy bars for my fixed gear. The wider option and the bullhorns give me the option to choose between control and speed which i find to be perfect for a commuter fixie.
I've been interested in these for a while. I would definitely want to cut them down though, my current handlebars are 570mm wide and that's about the max if you want to split lanes (Crazy Bars are 780mm).
@@therelianceschool thats what i thought when I first got them... but i actually love that they are so wide, especially since sometimes i have alot of weight on my day pack. its a great alternative position for a more comfortable speed easier to control ride. Im in chicago and have never found an issue splitting lanes. I highly recommend them, and you should try them out as is before cutting.
For commuting and having fun on my Wabi special I really enjoy my titanium bullmoose handlebar with a positive angle at the stem plus nice up & backsweep. Pretty light (355 grams) for 700 mm width and 110 mm at the stem and it feels just great.
Living in a rural area with literal pothole fields on some roads switching beloved bullhorn for a riser was a speed choice since only with that control you can actually survive some sections riding like 20 mph or more.
I have gravel-touring for that kind of stuff and as a daily that an expensive overkill. But for most of the week where i don't ride more than 100km a day - tracklocross is my best friend
I'm into the alt bars homie! Especially on a fixed! I hoped you'd get more into the "weirdo" bars in your video, cuz i love the comfort they provide. I feel like there's a following building for them, like the Nitto getarounds, stuff from Wilde, Crust, Simworks, BTCHN, Crumbworks ect. BlueLug got me big time inspired with their builds. About to build a fixed/ss with 650b, rock some 24 degree sweeps with Dad grips and do barspins just for funzies. All these alt bars have hella character and are super comfortable. I've decided to ditch the status quo flats and drops for something dorky and unique. Weirdo bars are at #1 for me. 🏆
My first fixed gear had drop bars and also was the first time I actually gave them a fair chance since I used to only ride porteur bars (an old version of the mustache bars). I actually got to like them and since I had never ridden drops with hoods I didn't miss the hoods. Surprisingly enough I was able to learn how to fakie a lot faster with pursuit bars and I feel the most comfortable riding them since my city is pretty hilly and there's nothing like climbing with pursuit bars, they also helped me getting comfortable riding with my hands super close to each other on the flats. The flat bars are ok but I like riding fast and apart from fish and chips I don't see any benefit for my riding style. The track drop bars are my least favorite, I find them super uncomfortable in any riding position. I also had mustache bars for my track packing set up because I thought they were gonna be more comfortable for the long rides but completely destroyed my wrists 😢 I also have some bull horns which I only use in winter when it snows or when it rains, I just feel like they give me enough control without having to stretch as much as I would have to with the pursuit bars. Oh, I almost forgot I had cruiser bars for a while on a typical dutch style bike which I ended up destroying o.o
Some people do with dropbars is that they put brake hoods and remove the levers they don't look as slick but it's pretty comfortable, or hanya brakeless hoods
when fixie came to my country in the early 2000s the super narrow bars , steel drops and bull horns are very popular . recently i seen a lot of young guns riding super wide mtb bars which is quite funny to me

Basically flat bars but with the option of being wide and upright (because the bars are swept back) or narrow and low. If I really need to get aero in a nasty headwind I rest my forearms in the lowest point, a little sketchy but a good option on occasion
Suicide bars come from the cafe racer/bobber/chopper motorcycle kulture. Suicide bars go back to the mid sixties and cafe racers to be more specific. Brit bikes are infamous for them.
Bullhorns without the drop are great, you can ride on the straight part, or on the "horns" which gives you some variety for long rides. Dia-Compe Guidonnet brake lever (can only be mounted on bullhorns without a drop) and they're perfect.

We used to call “ dummy hoods” stoker pegs so the rear rider on a tandem had more hand positions, and “ bull horn” handlebars were originally called L.A. ‘84’s made by cinelli for the’84 los angles olympics and used by Francesco Moser’s hour record attempt on a “ funny bike” with a smaller front wheel. My friend Nelson “ Tee-bah” Vails and Mark Gorski won the gold and silver medals at the’ 84 Olympics. Nelson was a bike messenger in NYC in the early ‘80’s when I was working and racing there at the same time. The first track bikes to show up back then were Panasonic steel frames from Japan and came out of the box with an “ hour record” gearing of something like 49x14 and I would see these guys struggling to make money with that ridiculous gear, having to stop and go all day on them. I only rode a track bike in the spring every year to develop leg speed for road racing but we had a lumpy outdoor velodrome called Kissena park Queens and would race out there several times a year. I thought it was strange when being a bike messenger went from “dirt-bag job” to “ urban hipster fashion” and some guys like Squid actually made some money from the fad while it lasted in the early 2K’s..unfortunately now in NYC all the gomers are zooming around on electric bikes and most of the traditional messenger companies are gone, victims of the insurance companies!
I just downgraded from Thomson's downhill bars on my Leader cause my fit demanded a higher rise on the bars. I am now on Origin 8's Urban pros and I love them. I'm glad i found this channel. Riser bars on my bike, single speed but usually with a freewheel. Ive always wanted to put a set of drop bars on upside down tho, maybe if I rode more fixed and didnt really need brakes.
Please make the dummy hoods !!!! I used to run some 3d printed ones but took off the bars to do some fun stuff but ended up breaking them and the guy who made them stopped manufacturing. Really helpful accessories !
No mention of cruiser bars and flared drop bars. i mean if you're not riding for long distances it makes sense you'd never look into them. america is kinda hostile to riding in general and/or very dull due to loooong flat lands, so it's either offroad or urban like fixies go. takes a special breed of cyclist to roam like europeans do. however flared drop bars are really nice for a fixed gear cx/gravel build. the shape protects brake levers and hoods. i have a handlebar i've stashed and revived recently, that go by the name on-one "fleegle". brand mostly died with chain reaction cycles's collapse, so the alternates are MUCH more expensive velo orange or nitto items. it's a mild riser/cruiser hybrid and it solves my issue with flatbars 50cm and up over extending the outward halves of my hands, even on very small frames, leading to pain and numbness. i cant ride anything wider than 52cm without at least 30° of backwards sweep. probably from being too used to drop bars. as for comfort bars... i got a free butterfly handlebar of unknown origin on my homebrewed cargo bike. it's many positions make it very usefull as they allow a significant rise in posture and a road like vertical grip (it's also narrower than the box, so i have been lane splitting with the bike, it spooks cagers to have a wooden box fly at their window's level lol). bars with high sweep arent suited for stunts and allow a straighter back without raising the stem, which is more comfortable and safer for older riders/urban cruising as you'll have more mobility in your neck and shoulders. ergotech has dozens of designs that are dirt cheap, somewhere around 20 euros a pop or less.
sweet baby jesus!!! whew, thanks for your bar tape/end cap disclaimer!!! your intro pics had me triggered. i know of a person who DIED because of being impaled by handlebars that werent capped. and she wasnt even on the bike! an elementary school boy was riding carefree, was about to hit his classmates's grandma then bailed off the bike. he hit the ground, it tumbled and, tragically, totally pierced her leg...like, through and through. she passed away. i also know of a fellow triathlete who crashed, had a chunk of his chest punched out, suffered a collapsed lung but survived...but barely. the culprit: no end caps.
If I could only do one kind it would be the road style type of drops, but I switch around to my other track drops and riser/flat bars depending on how I am feeling.
Nice video. I personally always liked to ride with risers and I still have one that is waaaaaay too narrow. There are many options for 3D printing dummy hoods online.

I put clip on TT bars on my bike and cut the flat bars they were mounted on down to nothing so the TT bars are the only position now. It's almost as fast as it is sketchy
Where is the Dutch style bar? (omafiets) It has the ends bend back towards you for a very upright riding position. It looks great on vintage style fixed gear. Not a fast option, but one that gives great stability. Especially when riding in windy situations.
8:55 It would be super cool if those dummy brake levers would function as horns and you could upload your tone on it. Just an idea from a product designer 😉
you can run a fixed wheelset for sure. most would recommend not doing that though. proper chain tension is harder to achieve with a non-horizontal rear dropout like a dedicated fixed gear frame has. to me it’s a shame to take away functions like coasting and changing gears with a frame that’s designed to be versatile. it’s also never going to feel as good as a true track bike/fixed gear. luckily for you, you can do as you please with your own bike 😎
Can someone answer my question ive learned a few skids like lean forward skid and normal skids on a fixed gear but the thing is i couldnt do a long skid and i cant figure it out why

Handlebars are so last century, I just use a really long stem.

If you don’t enjoy drops then you might have a difficult time with bullhorns.
@Glassgate drop are only good if you want to ride aggressively and build some speed. Everything else is better for city riding & handling

I use flat risers and I use bar tape over grips so I can wrap them all the way to the bends and get multiple hand positions
the cane creek dummy hoods deff give u versatility with hand positions and you can find what style dropbars they go best on for you .

Inverted drops (or cyclobal bars) for tricks, (shallow) drops where you actually ride in the drops - track cycling style - for speed.

Ive always wanted to put a set of drop bars on upside down tho, maybe if I rode more fixed and didnt really need brakes.
Please make the dummy hoods !!!! I used to run some 3d printed ones but took off the bars to do some fun stuff but ended up breaking them and the guy who made them stopped manufacturing. Really helpful accessories !

No mention of cruiser bars and flared drop bars. i mean if you're not riding for long distances it makes sense you'd never look into them.
america is kinda hostile to riding in general and/or very dull due to loooong flat lands, so it's either offroad or urban like fixies go. takes a special breed of cyclist to roam like europeans do.
however flared drop bars are really nice for a fixed gear cx/gravel build. the shape protects brake levers and hoods.
i have a handlebar i've stashed and revived recently, that go by the name on-one "fleegle". brand mostly died with chain reaction cycles's collapse, so the alternates are MUCH more expensive velo orange or nitto items.
it's a mild riser/cruiser hybrid and it solves my issue with flatbars 50cm and up over extending the outward halves of my hands, even on very small frames, leading to pain and numbness.
i cant ride anything wider than 52cm without at least 30° of backwards sweep. probably from being too used to drop bars.
as for comfort bars... i got a free butterfly handlebar of unknown origin on my homebrewed cargo bike. it's many positions make it very usefull as they allow a significant rise in posture and a road like vertical grip (it's also narrower than the box, so i have been lane splitting with the bike, it spooks cagers to have a wooden box fly at their window's level lol).
bars with high sweep arent suited for stunts and allow a straighter back without raising the stem, which is more comfortable and safer for older riders/urban cruising as you'll have more mobility in your neck and shoulders. ergotech has dozens of designs that are dirt cheap, somewhere around 20 euros a pop or less.
Surly side bars are pretty nice. put em on my hybrid to take it on gravel
Also I’d be interested in purchasing/supporting/helping with prototypes with the “dummy” levers/hoods!

sweet baby jesus!!! whew, thanks for your bar tape/end cap disclaimer!!! your intro pics had me triggered. i know of a person who DIED because of being impaled by handlebars that werent capped. and she wasnt even on the bike! an elementary school boy was riding carefree, was about to hit his classmates's grandma then bailed off the bike. he hit the ground, it tumbled and, tragically, totally pierced her leg...like, through and through. she passed away. i also know of a fellow triathlete who crashed, had a chunk of his chest punched out, suffered a collapsed lung but survived...but barely. the culprit: no end caps.
If I could only do one kind it would be the road style type of drops, but I switch around to my other track drops and riser/flat bars depending on how I am feeling.
what about drop bars flipped up and cut to resemble bullhorns?
Nice video. I personally always liked to ride with risers and I still have one that is waaaaaay too narrow. There are many options for 3D printing dummy hoods online.

I put clip on TT bars on my bike and cut the flat bars they were mounted on down to nothing so the TT bars are the only position now. It's almost as fast as it is sketchy

It has the ends bend back towards you for a very upright riding position.
It looks great on vintage style fixed gear. Not a fast option, but one that gives great stability. Especially when riding in windy situations.

My uncle got a Sportif Fuji bike and it has gears on it and I was wondering if I can use fixie wheels on it
you can run a fixed wheelset for sure. most would recommend not doing that though. proper chain tension is harder to achieve with a non-horizontal rear dropout like a dedicated fixed gear frame has. to me it’s a shame to take away functions like coasting and changing gears with a frame that’s designed to be versatile. it’s also never going to feel as good as a true track bike/fixed gear. luckily for you, you can do as you please with your own bike 😎
