Who here wishes that they could make the gazelle a usable JTAC laser painter. I love flying it, but you are stuck as a solo unit. Being able to paint the targets for other aircraft would be an awesome asset to the combat area.

Read a story where a Huey in Vietnam took a round through the short shaft between the turbine and the rotor. And a round that trashed the collective. So they were trying to autorotate while listening to a runaway turbine screaming unloaded at full throttle. And hoping they could get out before the turbine shredded itself. As I recall, they crashed, and the bird tipped sideways. The crew chief, a hero, cut the fuel lines with his emergency knife shut off the engine. High pucker factor.

The Huey was designed for a very permissive environment. Opposing ground fire was not anticipated. Adding weapons systems made them heavy, and therefore even more vulnerable. Adding armored seats, slower. Flak vests for the pilots/crew, slower. Cruise in Vietnam was like 90-100kts. The Gun birds were the slowest, having to make running takeoffs, as they couldn’t make a takeoff from a hover. The Dustoff birds were as light as possible, and could make that top speed you mention.

I was a passenger in a Gazelle in Canada's arctic quite a few times during remote highway construction projects in the 1970s. I think it is a graceful and beatiful design, an icon of helicopter technology.

I've not finished the video yet, am at the point where you switched helicopters. I am, however, really impressed with the Gazelle. Cap, you were flying it like a fixed wing and getting away with it! You had no problems with rolls, loops, Immelman, etc. This leads me to wonder what the Gazelle could do if its pilot were to fly using some of the tactics of fixed wing dogfighting, as in 1 circle/2 circle, energy management etc. The Gazelle has the advantage in speed, agility, and especially the agility in 3 dimensions (loop, Immelman/split S, roll); it's primary disadvantage is inability to take damage due to thin skin/lightweight construction. If it were to be flown with an eye to avoiding the one circle nose fight (in which the Gazelle only needs to be hit once by heavier shells to be taken down), focusing instead on the two circle where the Gazelle intentionally remains on the Huey's 6 by flying lag and then tightening down, I don't really see a way it could lose. Any chance you guys might try this?
I once heard the story of a shell passing through a gazelle without exploding because the armor was so thin.

I guess it's the price the designers were willing to pay in order to get that agilty. There aren't a lot of helicopters that can perform BFM like a fixed wing jet. It probably takes a wizard of a pilot to pull those maneuvers in combat while being constantly defensive even when aggressively getting on the opponent's 6 without taking _any_ rounds. I have always maintained that speed and agility will never become irrelevant. Combat situations in which those qualities are needed certainly do not occur now as frequently as they did in WW II or Korea, but...and it's a _big_ but!....(oh shit lol see what I just did there? ....a BIG but...< _a big BUTT, and I cannot lie🤣🥲😹😅😂_ > despite what the experts say, situations will arise in combat that will be utterly unexpected by mission planners. You may never dogfight in combat, (here comes that BIG BUTT), _BUTT_ if you only have to dogfight once in your entire career as a military pilot, whether fixed wing, rotary wing, variable-TOMCATS-sweep wing, that one time makes having an agile, fast aircraft priceless.
Because in a dogfight, only one flies away. I would certainly want to be the one who flies away, which would tend to make me pick the Gazelle.

Huey was made for the military in war, Gazelle was a civilian helicopter sold to the military. think combat boots Vs sneakers( Tennis Shoes). semi articulated rotor system vs fully articulated rotor system.
Could aerodynamics affect them enough to explain some of the difference in max speed?

Regarding the difference in climb rate; the Huey might have a slight advantage in power:weight but the Gazelle is so much lighter and so much more streamlined I think that's what makes up the difference. Plus (without knowing specifics, I'm just speculating) the tri-rotor of the Gazelle might mean more responsive lift input vs the Huey's big slow bi-rotor. Possibly something to do with lift generated per rotation or something. I'm guessing here 😅
I think the gazelle model is just over performing. Or the pilot is doing something wrong in the Huey

Watching both of you, and seeing some from your points of view, then thinking back to Kortana in the Hind fight. Clearly firing stability in a Helo is a question of stick time. She made it look easy, but clearly it isnt.

@Grim Reapers I guess dogfight until the F-15E is in DCS and/or new weapons. I don't play DCS so did not the F-15 did not have modern weapons.

I've found it's not that easy to mast bump in a dogfight with a Huey, but then again I fly the Huey mainly so it's just something I'm use to I guess. Good fights from the both of you.

Need a good video/forum for explaining how to tune gazelle controls... It feels way too twitchy with the smallest of inputs. I don't like how it flies, to me it feels broken compared to way the other helis fly... Need pointers haha
I struggle with it also.
Another item that I’m not sure is modeled, and I don’t know what effect it might have. Temp and humidity. Density altitude is a big thing with rotary wing aircraft. A hot, dry day, vs. a very humid cool day could actually have an effect on lift and turn.
With all this rotary wing stuff goin down... I need to see some Airwolf vs Blue Thunder.

No takeoff from a hover, for sure. Gun birds were pigs.
In Country, skinny guys got Gun birds, heavy guys got the Slicks, and the guys who brought their balls to the flight line in a wheelbarrow got the Dustoff missions.
What i don't understands is, can't a helicopter rotate on a dime? Why can't you just turn the body of the helicopter while hovering? That way u don't have to take those long drawn out turns with forward momentum. U can get shots on target at will. It's what Damp Sock does all the time.
I you have forward speed the aerodynamics will keep your nose in the direction of movement. You only have a limited amount of tail rotor authority.

Cap.... someone should do a Blue Thunder mod or the Gazelle..... in reality real movie used a modded Gazelle afterall .. also...the Gazelle has an extra rotor blade, so for a similar power to weight would produce more lift, hence the better performance! Having seen footage of real Gazelle in low level action I could well belive it is as lithe as depicted in this video!
The real loser is the people on the ground. A few thousand HE bullets and rockets can really mess up your day.

You should turn off head movement, specially in helicopters. It would give you such a better view.
20mm round through the cockpit on a Huey and both pilots are slaw. Hind vs. Apache would be a better test.
Cap, can you do a fight with the F-15 vs the Su-27, Su-30, Su-33, Su-34, or Su-35? You don't have to do all of the flankers any of them will do.

Yes. Its already designed to hit moving targets, so a slow helo would be doable.

If this is a mock-up of the final fight/shoot-out in "Blue Thunder"... you goofed, guys. Col. Cochrane piloted an AH-6 w/dual .50-cal machine guns, not a UH-1 w/7.62mm M134 miniguns. And where's the Gazelle's nose-mounted, pilot's monocle-guided flexible minigun?!

h models didnt really run guns, they used the charlie model as the gun ship, horribly horribly under powered, they had to run on the skids until translational lift to even get off the ground when armed

Mast bump? Who’s flying their Huey upside down? I’ve heard the swash plate bump when the collective bottoms when you’re headed for the deck in a hurry. The nice thing about the rotor system in the Huey is that it’s pretty tough. Except for the Jesus nut. The delaminating issue was solved, as I recall.
