    I can't believe that Stuart's stuff didn't make this list. I think that The Big Bang Theory handled parental abandonment well when Sheldon found a letter from Howard's father. His choice not to read the letter is heartbreaking.

    One that is important is that even the bullied can become bullies without realizing it. When the four of the guys gang up and make fun of Zach for being stupid. He is not smart but he does realize he is being made fun of. And Penny coming in and telling them "shame on you". Its a reminder that no matter who we are we all feel inferior to someone in some way. His extreme fear and discomfort when it comes to change actually comes from his autism. Another cool thing about number 2 was turning it around on a bully becoming self-aware. Penny realized, by making friends with a bunch of people who had been bullied as kids, that the things she did as a kid that were "all in good fun" were actually cruel and harmful to her peers and then tried to make up for it.
    And my favorite part about number 1 was how, for once, Sheldon completely empathized with Howard in what he was going through. I know all of us were braced for a seriously cringe-worthy and inappropriate statement when he said he wanted to say something when they found out Howard's mom died. Instead, all he said was he had gone through this alone when his father died, but Howard didn't have to. He was saying "we're here for you," which is probably the most compassionate thing Sheldon ever said.
    And another serious topic I feel the show tackled well was Penny's overarching story line about going into adulthood with big dreams that never come to be, so she eventually had to find a way to be happy and successful in a mundane way. She isn't in love with her job as a pharmaceutical salesman, but she is very good at it and has managed to "grow up," so to speak, because of it.

      I understood on a theoretical level what it meant to lose a parent but I hadn’t actually lost one while the show was running. Looking back on how they handled it (as well as other episodes where the concept comes up - I.e., a Thanksgiving ep where Bernadette’s dad finds out that Sheldon’s dad died when he was 14 and tries to help him w the loss by sharing his first beer w him) in any case, having now gone thru this loss, I can simply say that I (personally) find it overwhelming & approximately 19 months following the occurrence, I haven’t really found that peace or greatly tempered sadness that others talk about after the fact. I still mistakenly think of calling up my dad to tell him something funny or politically relevant or simply to chat and Sheldon was right - without others to turn to, I wouldn’t have found the last 19 months remotely bearable.
      Yes, the show was mostly for laughs and I’ll always think Jim Parsons is a God but TBBT did indeed touch upon some serious issues and they dealt with them w grace and dignity. I wish the list had included a more specific type of social anxiety for Sheldon, as he was filled w neuroses that his friends basically just nurtured until Amy slowly helped him with some of the biggest problems. But Penny too was a large part of that. I remember how she got Sheldon to come out for a birthday party and he ultimately realized that they could really be fun (sort of like kissing Amy - what a revelation!) But I guess w only 10 things to discuss, they were pressed for what to include.

      I wish they would have had Penny explored what 'thing' she could get excited about more, though. As she sees her friends have hobbies and interests they're passionate about and it would be an understandable arc for her. Personally, I would have LOVED if they explored her natural talents as a gamer more (I'm a serious gamer myself. Always have been.). It would have been a good way for Penny to get an arc that gives her agency, as well as tackle some themes and issues related to gaming like the rampant sexism within the hobby. On top of that games as a whole would have gotten a lot more representation on the show. Also, I can't help but think Penny would enjoy TTRPGs considering most of them encourage _players playing their role aka acting_.

      And something a lot of us have suffered with, and cost us dearly.
      When a parent exhibits conditional love or views them as an obligation instead of a wanted part of their life, it causes irreparable damage to the child that impacts every aspect of their life.
      I wish more people would think before having children.

      @@Trix897 This is so shockingly true. An unloved child will never learn to love itself. No matter how much they are provided with, be it food, clothing, education etc, the lack of genuine love and understanding will always have an empty space in their minds.

      It's an interesting perspective though.
      We see a mother that doesn't seem to love her child in the traditional sense. Despite all her accomplishments with understanding parenting she completely misses the nurturing ingredient.
      But due to the parallel we see between her and Sheldon, it makes me wonder if she was on the spectrum.
      So her neglect may have been out of her control. Unintentional.
      Not excusing it. Simply understanding it.
      We see women all of the time having babies for selfish or careless reasons. Intentionally not being nurturing.
      I think this was a little different

    • @raizahasmath5580
      @raizahasmath5580 3 роки тому +8

      @@slvrangel22 It wasn't different. It was relatable with many. But, never have been addressed before. Everybody thinks that mothers are always on the angelic side. They will love their children no matter what. They have known just few cases straying from that universal fact as such of plainly physically abusive and moms with mental health issues. Other than that all moms are automatically loving.
      But, Leonard's family changed that and showed that there are moms who can't simply love their children without being abusive and still providing their children with everything facilities. The irony is choosing a psychiatrist who cannot understand her own child. That's where TBBT stands out.

    • @slvrangel22
      @slvrangel22 3 роки тому +5

      @@raizahasmath5580 We know that she wasn't that comfortable with touch. She wasn't that in tune with emotions and also thought in a literal context.
      Mothers come in all form. But not all mothers are moms and mommy's. They simply birth the child and that is the end of their part in the process. Some still provide the basics but lack the nurturing gene or in some cases are more concerned about their own personal needs and therefore neglect what their child needs.
      I do think his mother was selfish and although aspergers is less likely to occur to in females, if she did have it, then that nurturing emotional piece was not entirely in her control. We see Sheldon make an effort to better understand it, but even for him that is a struggle because it is a part of his brain that doesn't function like the rest of ours.
      Can we hold someone accountable if their brain isn't processing that piece correctly?

    Sheldon tells him to wear an itchy sweater until he resolves a situation Sheldon would freak out about. I'm ADHD and Sheldon is clearly in the autism spectrum, but I related hard to the "itchy brain" thing and it's an episode that tackles empathy to people with neurodivergence in a fun way. But yes, Leonard's panic with the sweater is 100% how I feel when I have to go to the bank and deal with all the bureaucracy or sit through a boring lecture: a very annoying itch nothing on the planet can scratch.

    How the group dealt with Sheldon was the biggest "tough topic" I think this show covered. He was difficult and many times seemed unreasonable, but his friends understood his mind just worked differently. The fact that they kept him involved and got him more social is the best arch in the whole show. His relationship with Penny was my favorite to watch. They loved him, protected him, and called him out when needed. Even calling his mother on several occasions (and the fact they all had her phone number) showed they really did care for him, not just put up with him. Sheldon gave every really everyone that is deemed "out of the norm" a chance to see that all you need to do is find your people.

  • @Мими-закнигитеихората

    At the end of the show there was a scene where they showed a picture of the woman playing the voice of Howard`s mom sticked to the fridge for remembrance. It was so touching... Also through the most of the show you can see some elements like pictures from Howard and Bernadette`s wedding, toys and other stuff which have took place at some point of the show. It`s nice, that makes me feel like the series are more connected to the real life

    My personal favorite (most memorable or most important in my opinion) moment at can be technically applied to as a issue is Sheldon having childhood trauma from open the door to seeing his father cheating. Ether way after that Sheldon says it's the only reason he knocks 3 times before opening a door or waiting for someone, kinda dark but I think it tackles the issue as it brings light to why Sheldon is Sheldon and even more so with the show Young Sheldon.

    I love how the series handled the letter from Howard's father. At the end of the episode his friends gave him 6 different versions of what the letter said and they let Howard and the audience decide which was the true one.

    The show also highlighted the problem of toxic parenting. Leonard’s mom never showed any affection towards him and used him for her experiments. When Leonard stood up to his mother and forgave her and himself many people could relate to him.

    There has been some good chances like in season 12 when Leonard finds out that Sheldon and Amy’s theory was proven false. At that point Sheldon has a meltdown but the laugh track makes it seem like it is supposed to be a joke. In reality it is a great representation of what exactly happens when your work that you are so passionate about does not work out.

  • @ellajacobson2275

    My favourite episode will forever be S7 EP8, "The Itchy Brain Simulation". Amy suggests multiple times throughout the series that the reasoning for Sheldon's anxieties around knocking and hoarding etc stem from Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. The way Sheldon describes it to be like an itch in his brain when something is not resolved, and the simulation Leonard underwent with the itchy sweater was honestly the best way I have ever seen someone explain the real fear and discomfort that comes with obsessive-compulsive behaviour. I have said to people that sometimes I just feel like there's so much going on in my brain I have the urge to claw at it, like there's an actual weird placebo-like pressure at my temple that I need to satisfy but can't. It was actually very comforting to see how that can be acknowledged and understood by a simple explanation. I can see the way the itchy brain simulation can help people with different mental health issues or disabilities feel understood, this was the way I related to it and I loved how well it was written.

    Kaley Cuoco was on two shows where one of the actors passed away while filming and they wrote in the character's death that the actor played into the show. John Ritter's death, or Paul Hennessey on 8 Simple Rules, was especially heartbreaking.

    For me the finest attribute of this show is that it is a seamless blend of humour and pathos. The writers know that there is usually a funny edge to anything. You could fill half a list of ten with Sheldon's issues. Bernadette's motherhood fears was an oversight. And then there was Stuart...
