Only thing with sheepshead is there's a lot of em. If you're targeting a certain species you got to get thru tons of sheeps tearing up bait. Keep ya busy fishing though.
As well as Bowfin,Gar,Chain Pickerel and Carp I just tried fresh water Drum for the first time tonight and it was delicious I will be eating plenty more of them
Tried one I caught in Lake Manawa, IA, and it was rubbery, nasty. It was fun to catch, though, put up a pretty good fight. Have caught several there and I always let them go... Going to try grilling an asian carp next as soon as the weather is right. I know a side channel off the MO river where they jump a lot, sometimes getting in the boat.
I think there's some element of classism in fishing. Some folks have ideas as to what kinds of people eat what kinds of fish. It's sad really. I eat quite a lot of drum from my local river, it's a go to because of the massive population and the ease with which you can catch eating size fish (once you know the rig to use).
That is true that many people put an unfair judgment on fish without trying it however I will say I've tried freshwater drum once and I do not like the texture. But that's probably cause I'm somewhat of a fickle fish eater as I don't like crappie or bluegills either. I love smallmouth bass but largemouth are mushy,muddy and have those little black veins in the meat.
They're related but taste absolutely nothing like a redfish at least from my experience. Redfish big buttery soft but not mushy flakes😋,freshwater drum springy rubbery and fibrous 🤮
notice you spelled it "sheephead" and not "sheepshead" like others, i think you are using the right spelling for this fish but then again i've seen both used so not sure anymore

A little old bay or lemon pepper seasoning and sheepshead is good fried
Up in the northern Mississippi I used to smoke em with cherry wood and brown sugar 🤤

Eaten it a few times. Always very good. Better out of the Croix I'm sure. Small Mouth Bass are amazing too. Huge white flaky meat. MMM
When cleaning a freshwater drum remember to keep the inner ear bones to use as a lucky charm!

Marinate the filets and put them on a grill.
Cut all the red off and you won’t get the fish taste. We’ve ate them for years.
