I've taken to writing all of my instruments in a single piano patch and it's actually really helpful.
So I'll write my chords on C2 (or whatever key I'm working in) and in the same midi patch I'll copy the bass note down an octave and cut that up as necessary for my bass. Then on C3 (or C4 if it's getting in the way of my chords) I'll write a basic syncopated arp and add or delete notes until I've got a melody I'm happy with (unless a full arp is what I want) and then I might go another octave up and write some flavour notes. Then I'll duplicate that midi patch numerous times and delete everything except one element until I end up with one track being chords, one track being bass and so on and can then get into sound selection from there.
This also works for percussion by the way. Let's say you're doing a four to the floor EDM track. Put your kick notes in on every beat as usual in a loop, then put other kick hits on the grid, playing around until you've got a groove you like using nothing but kick. Then duplicate it and on the duplicate, swap out the kick for a percussion sound and delete the four to the four kick notes while on the original kick midi patch delete the extra percussion notes and tada you've got a percussion groove and from there you can experiment further with that percussion groove, maybe duplicate it again and delete everything except one note (while on the one you duplicated keep everything except that one note) and now you have options. Maybe the one note percussion hit is a tom and the others are bongos or something.
And yes I'm aware this is all pretty basic stuff I'm talking about but I think it's the kind of thing that's useful to remember regardless of your experience level because whether you're a beginner or a longtime producer you're going to get stuck and sometimes the most basic hacks can be a real help to get you out of a rut.
Also, don't be afraid of synth presets. Seriously. If anyone tells you that you need to create your own "unique" synth sound just remember that every synth they created from scratch is probably available as a preset somewhere. If you like how a preset sounds, use it and if you want to you can always tweak the preset to your tastes. Using presets is no more a cheat than using a sample is. Daft Punk (who I love by the way) will use an old disco sample and change the key and they're geniuses. It's ultimately no different than grabbing a Serum preset and slightly changing the cutoff. Anyone who says any different is a pretentious prick. Make the music you want to make and if you can find shortcuts to get what's in your head into your DAW, go for it.

I get most of my ideas when not sitting at the DAW. The Quick Voice on
My phone is full of myself doing vocals baselines etc. Sometimes, I will get a hit song in a dream and so there have been occasion where I have had to wake up a run off to a different room to try and get it on my phone. The challenge is you will listen to it later, but lose the context of what it was about.

Thanks Will... I typically start with a 4 bars, as well and typically have either some chords and/or bass notes in my head or scroll through the bazillion presets and hear something that suddenly peaks my interest. It doesn't always go anywhere, but those are my methods of madness. I keep trying to use session (Live) view and every single thing I have ever done in there has not been completed. I have even recorded them into Arrangement view, yet still can't finish them out. I even set my default template to open in Session view, and later changed it back to Arrangement. LOL. BTW - having a solid default template when you open Ableton Live is a gigantic key to get going. I have Scaler at the top, turned off, but I find myself using it pretty often to work myself out of a 4 bar chord loop.

Eeeek! This video is just too dangerous lol!
I try not to listen to anyone else when I get ready to produce. Grammy award winning artists are having to pay out millions in royalties to others for lifting elements off past works. Melodies, bass lines, choruses, hooks; heck someone sued and won for using a 4-note bar that is common place in the pentatonic scale.
I say, just don't do it! You need an idea... use any melody synth/generator that has some type of randomness or probability feature (Pigments 3 or the Elektron Syntakt).
You could produce a banger that puts you on the map (Robin Thicke) only to lose it all because you copied someone else's work, on purpose or inadvertently.

If you are not tired of listening to those 8 bars for 3 months straight, maybe you should just loop them for 10 minutes and your song is finished ;-)
