Well in todays era you gotta defend the three point line too because today era is either shooting 3 or attacking the paint and gobert is only good at defending the paint.
It’s so obvious that his teammates play terrible perimeter defense because they’ve gotten so used to him covering the rim for their mistakes. Mitchell was notorious for that.

@@ZentrixXentrix Rudy is a far superior defender than Shaq ever was. I'm at a loss as to why so many people seem to not recognize good defense when they see it. It's probably because the media focuses almost exclusively on offense and judges whether or not someone is a superstar based on offense stats alone, it seems. Defense is almost completely ignored.
People forget how AWFUL the Timberwolves defense used to be before we got Gobert, too. We had the worst defense in the NBA for years running. Now we have the #1 best. He completely changed the team, I have no idea how anyone with a brain can hate on this guy's defense. Thankfully, the GMs actually know wtf they're talking about in the NBA compared to the average fan or even player.
Rudy Gobert sucks. He’s got no offensive game. He’s can’t shoot FTs. Some games he just disappears and has hardly any rebounds in two points with zero blocks. This guy is no All-Star.
The thing about these DPOY voters I don’t get is that they value perimeter defense so much. Yet they voted for Rudy four times??? And when he struggles in the perimeter in the offs they criticize him for that? It’s like buying a small harmless house dog for the purpose of guarding your house and getting mad at it when it does a poor job.
As much as I dislike Rudy Gobert, I will always give him credit for what he does on the court. He's a good player. I just think he is overpaid, but not overrated. I thought they gave up WAYYYYYYYY too much to get him, but at this point they are definitely moving in the right direction.

It is funny that you could argue that the TWolves had to go against arguably the best offensive wing (KD), then the best offensive center (Jokic), and then the best offensive guard (Luka) in the same playoff run lol
At this point, I’ve changed sides to calling Rudy underrated. Mind you, I always enjoy clowning him for his perimeter defense and low light clips as much as the next guy, but it’s just gone WAY too far. It’s just that, since he’s the best defender everywhere he goes, he always guards the best players in the clutch. So any game winners/ highlight players are facing Rudy like 80% of the time, so bro’s bound to get cooked once in a while. But we gotta stop pushing the DPOY recall narrative, cuz while I personally would argue Wemby should’ve been DPOY over Rudy, I think it’s egregious to say that he was undeserving of it.
This is a great video. Very fair, I think this is absolutely spot on. He's a really good defender, but definitely overvalued as far as his contract is concerned.
Even this video doesn't do justice at how much he is hated for the wrong reasons. For instance he did not cry because he was not selected for the all star game, he cried because his mom (which was rejected by her own family because she had a black child btw) called him the night before and cried as she was sad for him and the journalists questions reminded him of this. If only people would watch full videos instead of cut, read full interviews instead of handpicked quotes, and so on... Also I find it funny that nobody talk about the crazy Luka's 3 and one bucket at the end of game 4 against ANT. Nobody talked about this one. Why? Luka can be unstoppable, particularly outside the paint by a center. You can only hope he misses. Overall, Rudy is currently the best player of the wolves this year and that's the problem. Just look at the +/- during each series. ANT and KAT need to step up on the offensive end.
I agree with much of what you said and thanks for clarifying that he didn't cry because he didn't make the all star game. This guy is awesome, I love Gobert. And I don't understand all the hate against him. The hate says more about the person hating than it does about Gobert because it's such irrational hate too
Regarding the Luka and-one bucket roward the end of game 4 probably doesn't get talked about because every angle makes it very clear that Ant did not foul him. It wasn't even close to a foul, yet it was called as one without hesitation or explanation. So that alone will deter mainstream outlets from covering or showing that play as much as they can get away with... because they're trying to make it seem like the league isn't rigged to favor Luka and Mavs. There's a pattern of not talking about things for that reason.
Sometimes they won't even show a replay on an important play, live, if there's a fishy call going on. And the commentators will just talk about something else to distract from it. But they only go that far if it's not clutch time, usually. Otherwise too many people start figuring it out.
I think the reason for the Rudy Gobert's hate is one, his inadequacy as an offensive player, two, he is an inside defender which by todays standard is also not enough, and third, he is lowekey a jerk... Making money signs, talking shits, joking about covid, etc. etc... so that mix really does not earned him any respect generally around basketball
THIS! I also want to add that I think people can't believe someone can be so great at the rim that he stops himself from scoring. It looks really pathetic seeing him try to score.
If you think being a jerk is a reason you've never watched the NBA. The Covid thing was indeed a mistake, but one he made when very few people were taking it seriously and one he apologised for many times. The money sign was completely fair, 99% of NBA fans complain about officiating and paid refs all day long, and he is far from the worst trash talker, even in this era. Some of the biggest assholes I've ever heard of are fan favorites like Michael Jordan, a notorious dick, or LeBron James, one of the most arrogant players ever. Luka is a crybaby that complains to the refs more in a game than most players do in their carreer, Embiid, Harden and Trae Young (and many others) are flop artists... And that's not even going to players like Draymond Green (whom I like a lot), Pat Bev or others who talk a lot more trash than Gobert without much more offensive ability, and still don't get anywhere close to the same amount of hatred.
@@surgeonso4345 Could he? Given that there were like three 3s a game back then taken by any particular team, and the odds of him having to defend 3s were so much lower, it's kind of hard to tell.
@@militarygradepotato You're probably basing your analysis entirely on 1 play from a highlight YT clip. Probably the Luka game winner. (Blame for this goes to McDaniels for letting the switch happen to put a Center on Luka at the perimeter, not on Gobert) Cherry picking fallacies are a major issue in basketball. And so is the false idea that if someone is a DPOY that means they ought to NEVER get scored on. Or people apply the same expectation like he needs to do some sort of spectacular last second switch then block to win a game. Defense is more of a game-long thing. You can't distill it down to 1 play.

I've watched everygame this series and yet again he sags of the pick and roll because he is too slow to guard man to man at the permiter. He may be good against the 30th to 10th best guards but the ones you play in the playoffs know how to score on that every time. Let's not even try and argue the ABOMINATION of an offensive game he has, I appreciate you making no attempts at praise of his offense it honestly embarising for him to have such a bad offensive game being a pro basketball player.
Rudy is the only DPOY that is matchup hunted inmy memory. It is not just this year but Harden switched his matchup to Rudy when he was in Huston. This gives the narative that Rudy is a good defender against average NBA players but not with top tier players.
The problem is his team mates. They get lazy and expect him to cover for their defensive mistakes. The Harden issue was the wing defensive play....not Rudy.
Matchup hunting isn't about elite VS average. Harden is a guard. Gobeet is a Center. Centers are typically taller (which comes with coordination issues when you're that tall) which makes it harder for a Center to play D on a guard on the perimeter shooting 3s. That's why you want guards or at least a forward playing D on a guard on the perimeter and your Center playing d inside, especially if it's a guy like Gobert who plays all-time great d inside
The hate he gets is crazy. It seems like the media only talks about him when he's caught in a lowlight, which does look embarassing until you remember they could do the same about any other player and it would only look worse. He defends one of the greatest offensive centers in league history as well as possible for 6 games ? Yeah let's just talk about the one game the MVP went off. The runner-up for MVP and best guard on the planet is cooking you whole perimeter defense ? Yeah let's stick our center onto him and laugh at the result. If you think he's overpaid that's fine. Was he the one to come up with the contract ? Was he the one to ask for a trade to Minnesota ? Why should he be getting the blame for other people's actions ? The bias against him is crazy.
Right… cos you can’t see in the game that some players don’t even look at the rim when they see Gobert down low, right? Or that he bothers a lot of shots at the rim. No, you definitely can’t see that on the court if you watch the game.
Can you even think like a center ? They have to defend rim and get the board, that alone is alot, ball can bounce anywhere and if you arent looking you wont know where. Alot of energy preservation involved. All 5 players on the team must be active for success on defense
@@darrenkeutzer387 You probably think that if someone is a DPOY that means the player NEVER gets scored on. The reasons why people hate Gobert are all so irrational that it's probably the quickest way to determine someone doesn't really know ball. The reason why he's disrespected by other players is a combination of his culture (he's French), the massive contract he got (other players are envious), and believe it or not but even talented basketball players can be pretty dumb when evaluating other players. So they make many of the same mistakes others make: Focusing too much on offense, not noticing what he's actually doing on defense (numbers prove this), etc... The league is mostly offense players these days. Hardly anyone plays legit defense to the point it's become a joke. And players tend to over-emphasize what they themselves are good at and spend a lot of time practicing, while diminishing other areas of the game. Plus, good defense is probably the most difficult aspect of basketball to analyze correctly. You have to really know basketball well to do it right.
This is an explanation of what a player can do to impact the defense, even when the stats don't necessarily show it. This is my style of play, not blocking shots, but making players think twice before coming my way.
Didn't the spurs have the best defensive rating when wemby was on the floor, yet had the worst one when he was off it? If that doesn't show wemby's impact Idk what will
I think it’s so funny how people call Rudy a help defender, which he is and it’s fine, but praise Gianni’s and draymond…. Who are help defenders and get cooked by their all star matchups as well
Defense in generell is an ungratefull job espacially at this level of competiton. You can have your arm in their face or really close to the ball and they still sink those shots and you will look foolish getting posterized but if you dont take that gamble you are not defending to your full potential.
@@zulfyby Well said. One reason why I like Gobert is he doesn't pull that ego crap of just getting out od the way because he doesn't want to get posterized. He just defends it. Sure he will end up on some posters but he has turned two AWFUL defensive teams into two of the best defensive teams (Jazz and MN) with the only change being his presence alone, he has 4 DPOYs, and his team is currently in the WCF. Many players have such massive egos that it's a detriment to winning.
Rudy gobert would be a multi-time All-Star in the 80s and the 90s it's crazy to say that but without pace and space this man would more than likely get more rebounds more blocks
This is how most people evaluate an NBA player. They cherry pick a single play and extrapolate that out as if that singular play is representative of the player's career.
The players themselves elected him DPOY and we are supposed to listen to a few jerks hating on him cuz they didnt get the same bag ? Pheeewww .... this is so trash
Everyone loves to act like the Conley Gobert pick and roll hasn't been running the Western conference for like 6 years now. I have no idea how either, but the two of them get it done, in the regular season at least.
Draymond hating Rudy makes sense because the former is a sociopathic head case who cheap shots his opponents in Artestian/Laimbeerian manner. Shaq hating Rudy also makes sense because the latter gets paid well for not having to carry the offensive load, even though the former only made 3 All-Defensive Teams in 19 seasons (none being 1st team, despite playing the majority of his prime being outside the golden era of big men AND despite being one of the most athletically-gifted big men in history). The rest of the Rudy smear artists in the corporate-state media, they are blatantly jingoists who also like to minimize the greatness of Jokic, Giannis, and Luka because they are 1) not their AAU buddies/peers, 2) not interested in player collusion, and 3) not politicking to be liked by schmoozing with talking heads/fringe media retired players.
The question is really who is better than Rudy, not how good is he. There is only one DPOY per year, so comparing him to Wallace is simply stupid when they never played at the same time. Nobody who hates Gobert is even suggesting who else SHOULD have won those years, except maybe the first year. That is how you know he is so disrespected, when other current players are not being named by his haters.
Rim protectors dont deserve dpoy. If your defence is only effective in a 1.5 square metre area then you're not really a good defender, you're just tall
So, this guys said Gobert has benefited from the Jazz poor perimeter defenders allowing him to get more blocked shots and win DPOY. At the same time he said the Jazz poor perimeter defenders allow penetration to the basket and difficult for him to defend in the playoffs. So the Jazz greatest weakness is Gobert’s greatest benefit and detriment.
When Mann is WIDE OPEN In the corner and Gobert is STANDING UNDER THE BASKET it makes me question the legitimacy of his DPOY awards. It makes me think that Wemby, Giannis or even Davis would have been a better choice. He is tethered to the paint, therefore he is LIMITED on the impact he can have. This makes sense if he’s in Boston with Brown, Tatum, Holiday and White, four guys who can cover his ass 24/7. Three level scorers eat him up. Luckily for him there aren’t many of them in the nba.
Rudy shouldn’t be the narrative. Sure Wemby should have been DPOTY and Luka MVP. But this is Lukas best regular season and now he’s the West Conf MVP and potentially the Finals MVP regardless if he wins or loses.😤 Luka came for all the smoke and him and Kyrie are getting any shot they want😂
Gobert being DPOY was the correct choice. People who deeply understand basketball pretty much unanimously agree on this. But there are for more fans who don't really understand basketball who think Wemby should have got it, usually just by comparing block numbers or something like that. Which is such an oversimplified take of defense in basketball that it's actually comical.
He prob gets the hate, cuz when he gets cooked on the perimeter, he looks like he's in the maytag turbo spin cycle whereas when others get cooked, they just get blown by.
These awards have always been meaningless. Not that I disagree in this particular instance, as I understand how impactful Gobert is on D (and I understand most fans simply don't get it), but as far as these awards... they are completely meaningless.
Gobert is elite at defending the paint. Everything else he's not good at. In the current era of the NBA I think versitility/switchability is valued more. I think If he were given a more reasonable contract I think less people would be so harsh on him.
We dont need a video breakdown tbh. Any avid hooper just knows talent/skill when you see it. Rudy has neither, is uncoordinated and soft af... He's just tall. If he were 4 inches shorter, he'd be just another awkwardly tall guy in society and not in the league
I’m not gonna lie I’m at the 6:00 mark and I gotta disagree. Just because a defensive scheme/system is designed for you to funnel and chase players off the wing doesn’t mean you deserve dpoy. 4 dpoy’s when you get cooked in a 1v1s and exposed when that system doesn’t work isn’t worthy of a dpoy for Rudy it’s more of a team accolade. Maybe I’m just yappin though. He did the right thing by finessin that check though.
They paid how much for Ruby Gobert? LOL!!! They would have been FAR better off spending that cash on someone who can shoot the basketball. That's why everyone laughs at him. This isn't the NFL, it's the NBA and it's a decidedly offensive game. Defense is just a fundamental part of that. A nice to have. Now the best defense will watch smarter teams win the NBA championship.

Elite defense is much harder to find in today's crop of NBA players than elite offense is. So yeah he is completely worth the money. It's not like it's difficult to surround him with offensive stars. But if you have those offensive stars, it is really hard to surround them with elite defense.
Wemby will win many DPOYs but Gobert is the better defensive player as of right now. I can almost guarantee that your entire analysis is as simple as comparing the block numbers and that's it.
Ain't no way Rudy Gobert is the most overrated, I'll take him over Ben Simmons any day of the week and a long list of other players tbh. It's all the contract that makes him a liability, but that's not his fault
Can you name any center that a point guard wouldn't want on a switch guarding him at the perimeter for a last second 3 pt shot? I guarantee any guard shooting a 3 would want a switch onto the opposing team's center guarding him in that scenario.
The differnce between dray and rudy vs gobert. Last 5 games. Jokic is minus on draymond. Jokic is positive on gobert. Dray has won 4-1 of the last five. Rudy 2-3 last five.
If anything, Goebert is the classic trap teams keep falling for decades. You get a great defensive big man and all of the sudden, the team gets adjusted as thought they forgot how to play defense because 1 big man = 3 players. Lots of standing around. When you see the triangle setup of Shaq, Horry, and Fox with the Lakers, no wonder they're so tough to go against.
Rudy Gobert getting a Max contract is not good for the NBA. Also he won multiple DPOY even if he was not a true Defensive Superstar. NBA has become so boring to watch. Look back and see who else won the DOPY it sucks NBA is weak.
Gobert is an easy target because the media attack him and because he doesn't have a huge base of fans. His game isn't made of spectacular highlights, so mot many fans in this NBA. That's the short of it because when you realize the impact he have on the defensive stats of the teams he played for... well it is no wonder GM want him and are ready to pay him that much.
Rudy's good when his D can funnel a single guy into the paint. But when they're a great playmaker (like Luka) out in space, Rudy has no hope of guarding them.
It was either scripted that way or it was a terrible mistake by McDaniels to allow that switch in that situation. In any case, one play in one game is really not very important. But it's how most fans evaluate players. It's just ridiculous

Rudy is a good defender strictly in the paint. He obviously cannot guard guards or SF with handles and more quickness. Not a DPOY if you’re only good in the paint

Well in todays era you gotta defend the three point line too because today era is either shooting 3 or attacking the paint and gobert is only good at defending the paint.
Name one player above 7 feet that can do a great job against perimeter players.
As usual, the casuals and idiotic sports media is wrong about a player. Numbers show Rudy is a defensive beast.
Right. And just watching him play, it's obvious he's a defensive beast
It’s so obvious that his teammates play terrible perimeter defense because they’ve gotten so used to him covering the rim for their mistakes. Mitchell was notorious for that.
Anyone else notice Shaq keeps criticizing bigs that have the potential to beat him? Particularly agile bigs with huge wingspans (McGee, Gobert)? Shaq may be powerful but I always see envy when he criticizing players with gifts that he doesn't have.
Lol gobert gonna beat shaq?? What stuff are you on right now and criticizing them because he doesn't have that skills??? Shaq is agile yes he doesn't have that long arms but shaq is agile back in his days he outruns other guards and wing players in fastbreak do your homework before telling some BS in the comment section. Lol and you call him a 4x DPOY and easily get scored by Tre Mann in the playoffs lmao and you expect rudy can defend shaq??

As a Jazz fan I sure wish we still had him. Our defense used to be awesome. Now it is the worst. Nuff said
People forget how AWFUL the Timberwolves defense used to be before we got Gobert, too.

I forget the exact fg% but rudy has been the best against jokic, and when you you look at the 2020 lakers rudy has done a better job than all three centers on that team against jokic
It is funny that you could argue that the TWolves had to go against arguably the best offensive wing (KD), then the best offensive center (Jokic), and then the best offensive guard (Luka) in the same playoff run lol
The Timberwolves playoff run may be one of the all-time hardest. And they still made the WCF.

Woke up to a new video posted by you a min ago is a great way to start a day. Hello from the Philippines!!!
Are you actually defending the refs for the money signs? How gullible are you?
Why didn't people hate Rodman? He was a defense / rebound guy who wasn't great at offense. People just don't make sense and follow narratives.
Only because Rodman could guard 1 thru 5,shutdown Shaq for 0 points in a half and ot
Rodman could defend more than just the restricted area.
@@surgeonso4345 Could he? Given that there were like three 3s a game back then taken by any particular team, and the odds of him having to defend 3s were so much lower, it's kind of hard to tell.
@@surgeonso4345 Rodman also wasn't a Center, btw. Name one rim-protecing center who isn't atrocious at guarding the perimeter
He's worth the money. There are offensive only players getting paid big money. Why can't a defensive guy get paid as well.
Because when it matters most he isn't even a defensive player. Liability on offense and defense in playoffs.
@@militarygradepotato You're probably basing your analysis entirely on 1 play from a highlight YT clip. Probably the Luka game winner. (Blame for this goes to McDaniels for letting the switch happen to put a Center on Luka at the perimeter, not on Gobert)
Cherry picking fallacies are a major issue in basketball. And so is the false idea that if someone is a DPOY that means they ought to NEVER get scored on.
Or people apply the same expectation like he needs to do some sort of spectacular last second switch then block to win a game.
Defense is more of a game-long thing. You can't distill it down to 1 play.
@@militarygradepotatoAsk yourself this... how many blocks are there per game compared to points scored? In the game of basketball?
Are you able to differentiate good defense from bad defense, aside from obvious things like blocks and steals?
@@lightbeforethetunnel wow quit spamming the replies. He has played drop coverage his whole career off pick and roll and I have watched team after team of his get bounced out of the playoffs because of it.
@@lightbeforethetunnel so um ... Not going to say anything about last night?
This was a good video. I was expecting another irrational hate fest. But instead, it was fair and intelligent. Well done.
3:11 and then Rudy literally blocked Russ 10X. We wrecked them 🤣. Wanna know how I know?? I’m in that video. 💀
Rudy's impact is only seen with analytics. He doesnt do anything when it matters. But his +/- against the hawks in november was amazing.
@@redhorsepapiI did see Rudy get shit I’m so many times in the playoffs , he’s the most disrespected player by other players for a reason
@@redhorsepapi Many fans really only notice offense when they watch basketball

Many players have such massive egos that it's a detriment to winning.
well giannis plays same level of defense but can actually provide value elsewhere lol
This video explains that Rudy's first DPOY was the same argument that Wemby had this year minus the stats.
Rudy gobert would be a multi-time All-Star in the 80s and the 90s it's crazy to say that but without pace and space this man would more than likely get more rebounds more blocks

@starn9 fortunely i'm not broke and i live pretty well, greetings.

So, this guys said Gobert has benefited from the Jazz poor perimeter defenders allowing him to get more blocked shots and win DPOY. At the same time he said the Jazz poor perimeter defenders allow penetration to the basket and difficult for him to defend in the playoffs. So the Jazz greatest weakness is Gobert’s greatest benefit and detriment.
people used to praise Deandre Jordan and compared him to Bilt Russell when Rudy Gobert is WAYYYY better than DJ ever was!
Yeah. Let’s give all awards to players on the worst teams because awards like MVP and DPOY should be all about stats
How did Dallas score 124 points in game 5 if Gobert is so dominant? The other four guys suck? They dominate the 10 minutes he’s off the floor?

These awards have always been meaningless. Not that I disagree in this particular instance, as I understand how impactful Gobert is on D (and I understand most fans simply don't get it), but as far as these awards... they are completely meaningless.
Gobert is elite at defending the paint. Everything else he's not good at. In the current era of the NBA I think versitility/switchability is valued more. I think If he were given a more reasonable contract I think less people would be so harsh on him.
If Rudy is a DPOY he must be playing good defense when I'm not looking
Dennis Rodman was another multi-DPOY that was offensively challenged...Gobert is overrated.

I would say Luka is the most disrespected player in the NBA. Atleast by the NBA media.
Rudy Gobert getting a Max contract is not good for the NBA. Also he won multiple DPOY even if he was not a true Defensive Superstar. NBA has become so boring to watch. Look back and see who else won the DOPY it sucks NBA is weak.
we r sorry rudy
Gobert is an easy target because the media attack him and because he doesn't have a huge base of fans. His game isn't made of spectacular highlights, so mot many fans in this NBA. That's the short of it because when you realize the impact he have on the defensive stats of the teams he played for... well it is no wonder GM want him and are ready to pay him that much.
Because he sucks. He is 7 feet tall and he is a liability on offense and defense.

The most overrated player is LeBalco Shames, the queen.
Rudy's good when his D can funnel a single guy into the paint.
But when they're a great playmaker (like Luka) out in space, Rudy has no hope of guarding them.
I don’t know why he was one on one with Luka in that situation anyway.
It was either scripted that way or it was a terrible mistake by McDaniels to allow that switch in that situation. In any case, one play in one game is really not very important. But it's how most fans evaluate players. It's just ridiculous
