This episode constantly flipped from being great, to suddenly being god awful, then immediately jumping back to being great again. This happened about six times into the episode.
    HIGHLIGHTS:
    - Dan. All of him, from his opening bit in the museum, to his relationship with Diane, to the scene where he looks at his empty cupboard (Powerful stuff, glad it's being covered, even in brief!)
    - The bit with Claire talking to The Doctor and Yaz, and her bit with the door.
    - The Weeping Angels as a whole.
    - The Space Hound, and his entire deal. That whole plot was great, I loved it.
    - Yaz having the most character she's ever had (Though Dan still has more development than she does, sadly).
    - The Doctor using the virus from Orphan 55 was good, I love it when The Doctor uses stuff we saw them pick up earlier.
    LOWLIGHTS:
    - The opening scene with the stupid antigravity circus training being the solution to the problem. That was the worst bit of the whole episode.
    - The bit where the swarm said "Trick or Treat" directly at the camera.
    - The Chilli Guy in the Arctic Circle scene. A typical Chibnall "made to die" character with no personality.
    - The planets being destroyed looked bloody awful. (Also, did the rest of the Solar System get destroyed since they only surrounded Earth? What happened to the moon? Or the sun? Are the Ice Warriors refugees now? They should have made a half pipe to flip the flux a different direction.)
    - The bit where Yaz and The Doctor are talking about their attitudes to eachother that was immediately interrupted by an alarm. (To quote the great J Exci "Character time is over, now it's time for plot!") That scene fitted the stereotype so well it felt almost like a self-aware jab at itself.
    - The worrying feeling I have about the Swarm's abilities to regenerate themselves means that they're something to do with The Doctor's pre-Timeless Child origins from beyond the purple portal.

Yaz is helped by the fact that she was the only companion for this episode, Chibnill was forced to develop her more, and even then I thought she still wasn't really a character and had no progress made on the 'why we should care about Yaz' front. She was good foil for the doctor tho, but she still is a non-character

But I do agree that every subsequent appearance from them was unnecessary during Moffats era. Easily could've been replaced with any other alien race and served the same purpose.

For a Chibnall episode this is good. The Doctor finally feels like the Doctor. Jodie seems more confident in the role now. Yas finally gets some development and is actually confronting the Doctor over her actions. It’s so nice to see this. The effect of Ryan leaving the Tardis has resulted in this and makes the show so much better. The special effects are stunning, but as per with the rest of the Chris Chibnall era the writing and dialogue is a bit iffy. It’s not perfect and has some issues. Chris Chibnall can write some good content but there is always something boring about it. However, saying that, this is still a good episode to start off the six chapter. I feel Chris Chibnall may well be more comfortable writing chapters with arcs over 6 stories. He clearly enjoys classic Doctor Who mixed with the RTD era & I feel it will work well for Series 13. While Chris Chibnall’s writing can be boring and bland, he does classic villains really well imo! The Sontarans look amazing and the next chapter should make the Sontarans a serious force again.

True. I mean I enjoyed it but I don't like how it doesn't have an independent storyline. Most of Doctor who is episodic, even a newcomer could watch one and get a nice time out of it. You don't need to watch X amount of episodes for it to make sense for you. This is especially important for series openers where many would start watching. But with this one, if you haven't seen last season, you will have no idea what's happening and definitely won't enjoy it.

Audience: Hey, so I thought the Division was a Gallifreyan thing that was comprised of mainly Timelords doing black ops stuff. Why would they also employ a Dog Man, and if they did, why was he allowed to leave with his memories intact? And how did the Doctor even find out about him if the Division covers its tracks so well?
Chibs: Don't know. But we're here now. Just go with it.
Audience: Hey, so if Swarm is so dangerous and being held in this big old space prison in the middle of nowhere and these two Division ladies are there to make sure he can't get out, why are they so woefully unprepared to deal with him when he does escape? And why did the prison fail? It just turned off its defenses and let him go. How? Why? How did he actually manage this escape? Did he plan this? Was it an accident? What gives? It's never mentioned again.
Chibs: Don't know. But moving on...
Audience: Hey, so if Swarm is so dangerous that he has to be held in some big old space prison, how come his seemingly equally dangerous sister is just hiding inside the body of an Artic housewife?
    Chibs: Because.
Audience: Hey, so how did Swarm get to the Artic?
    Chibs: Er... unclear.
Audience: Also, was his sister, like, unknowingly trapped inside that woman's body? Did the woman know she was in there? Did her man know? What's all this about?
Chibs: Hey look! Sontarans! Dog People! Weeping Angels!
Audience: Hey, so if the dog people are meant to protect humanity why would the main Dog Guy actively try to kill Yaz? Why wouldn't he simply tell the Doctor what he's up to?
    Chibs: Also unclear... Drama?
Audience: Hey, so Dan just loves his city so much he doesn't want to look for work because he's too busy pretending to be a tour guide because he just loves everything so much he's practically glowing. He has no food, but refuses to use food banks for fear of taking a can of soup away from someone more in need... so, what's with the OTT need to make him some sort of grinning saint?
Chibs: We have to do the work so the audience doesn't assume he's evil. Also, he might be evil.
    Audience: Right...
    Chibs: Right.
Audience: Hey, so if Dan has no food or money, how was he gonna go on a date with the nice museum lady without at least paying his way? What was the plan there?
Chibs: Doesn't matter now, does it?
Audience: Hey, so the universe-ending energy hurricane can't get past a special dog spaceship formation? Because their hulls are made of a special material that it would seem doesn't exist anywhere else in the known universe... That was handy, wasn't it?
Chibs: I know. Isn't sci-fi great when it's done well?
Audience: Hey wait a minute. So there were like 7 billion dog ships coming to Earth. One for each human?
    Chibs: Yup. Man's best friend.
Audience: But... does that mean literally one human per ship?
Chibs: I guess so. (Looks at the script) I mean, that's what it says in here.
Audience: So the dog people were coming to literally rip newborn babies from the parents' arms and put them on their own ships? Kids were gonna be locked in those electrified floor cages with no food or water or idea of what was happening to them? Old people with dementia too? Disabled people? People with learning difficulties or a neurodivergence? Those cages were barely big enough for Dan to fit inside without zapping himself, what if a big person had to fit in there? This is horrifying!
Chibs: Oh my God that *is* horrifying.
Audience: So is that what they were going to do?!
Chibs: Unclear. Glad they didn't though. That woulda been dark.
    Audience: Unclear?! You're the writer!
    Chibs: *shrugs*
Audience: Hey, so how could that guy from Outpost Rose outrun the Flux in a dinky little escape pod but the TARDIS couldn't?
Chibs: Because the plot needs to happen.
Audience: Hey, so the Flux is a lot like Cloud Galactus, and Parallax, and the snap, and the Nexus from Star Trek. Aren't you worried about this looking a bit derivative?
Chibs: Not at all! People don't watch Star Trek, anyway. Or remember things. We're safe as kittens.
Audience: Hey, so the 13th Doctor has caught a bit of stink in the past for being an uncaring, dismissive, incompetent Doctor. You don't do her any favours when you have her actively ignore a person who clearly knows her, but from a different point in her timeline, is clearly in trouble, and says a red flaggy phrase like "I'm going home the long way round". And 13 doesn't even blink. She just leaves her there and doesn't pick up on the distress this woman's in, or that she might have answers as to what's going on. And then the woman gets done in by an Angel. That's weirdly incompetent of the Doctor. I could never see 11 missing a chance like that to help someone or probe further. Or 12. Or 10. No other Doctor would have done that... okay, maybe 6. Did you just intentionally nerf her perceptiveness here so the plot could happen?
Chibs: Well, the plot did happen. So...
Audience: Hey, so when Claire's getting stalked by the Angel, are we expected to feel a sense of tension around the idea that if she gets inside her house, she'll be able to escape? From an Angel? The species that's been shown previously to be able to force its way inside reinforced blast-proof spaceship doors? A wooden front door is gonna stop it? Really? It kind of undermines the tension a bit, doesn't it?
Chibs: Hey why don't you shut up and move on?
Audience: Hey, so a big criticism of series 11 and 12 was the paper-thin writing for the companions. No one got to shine very much, least of all, Yaz. She was a thinly written, inactive, exposition machine who seemed to exist to ask questions and be told what to do. But now she's a gruff, snarky, I-can-do-anything girl boss. She's hacking security codes for the dog man's human cage, she's reading radiation levels from the TARDIS console, she's doing judo flips on rocket-powered hoverboards, and even helping to pilot the TARDIS. That's a sharp change in characterisation and ability without showing the audience that development.
Chibs: Wait, I know this one... (reads notes)... I've just written "Make Strong Female Character" here. Did we not do that?
    Audience: ...
    Chibs: ...
    Audience: ...
Chibs: Yaz is probably gay, by the way.
Audience: Hey, so Liverpool 1820, Weeping Angels, Sontarans, Spooky House, Outpost Rose... what's the deal with all that?
Chibs: Don't worry about that. That stuff's in the "Later Drawer". But it sure does make episode 1 feel fast-paced and substantive without actually having to follow through on anything, doesn't it? It's what great writers call "jangling the keys".
    Audience:
Chibs: It was Moffat's favourite technique. I think he'd like this epsiode.
Audience: Like... the technique he used in Time of the Doctor? And the Wedding of River Song? The technique to move at a million miles an hour, throw tonnes of info at the audience that they don't need, and spin so many plates that he's scrambling to pay off all his nudge-nudge-wink-wink setups? That technique?
    Chibs: Brilliant, isn't it?
Audience: Right, yea. Brilliant. Those episodes aged super well. Look, one last thing.
    Chibs: Shoot.
Audience: Our universe isn't trillions of light-years in size. And those are the wrong Sontarans. And the Master shouldn't be evil now. And this Timeless Children thing makes so little sense. And I hate these Daleks and the fact that no one on Earth can remember them... again. AND WHY IS A PRE-HARTNELL DOCTOR RUNNING AROUND IN A POLICE BOX CALLING THEMSELVES THE DOCTOR?! STOP IT. Just stop it!
    Chibs: (waggles eyebrows)
    Audience: What?
    Chibs: You're right.
    Audience: I am?
Chibs: Yes, you are. *Our* universe isn't that big. But an alternate one might be.
    Audience: Ohhhhhhh
    Chibs: Ahhhhhhh Haaaaa

My prediction: The Flux isn't destroying stuff. It's just something that happens when something major happens which causes the course of the whole universe to change, basically going against everything we've been told before about fixed points in time. It's technically erasing the current known universe but everything is just being moved to the modified universe. Somehow The Doctor and everyone else in the Tardis manages to cross over without any damage and all their knowledge of the previous universe.

I have a hard time getting excited over 20+ plot threads being thrown at us, given that usually it's much easier to set up "mysteries" than actually give a satisfying answer and conclusion, along with it's still Chibnall writing this.
Plus if I'm gonna be honest, I feel like a good chunk of these plot threads won't be even explained, like the sister being disguised and part of the Division for some reason. I hope I will be proven wrong though.

Like "War of the Sontarans" sounds like it's most going to, well, a war featuring Sontarans. The Halloween episode was cluttered and Chibnall still doesn't know who to trim dialog, create an actual funny joke, or give us any reason why, after two seasons and two specials, we're supposed to care about Yaz,. But I assuming that each episode after this will be individual stories that are still tied somehow with the rest of Chibnall master plan. And, despite it being cluttered, it still held my interest.

because in "Rose" they do the whole bit about the fact that the Doctor "Feels the rotation of the Earth" and all the life on it that's honestly a genuinely pretty cool idea and gives the Time Lords a sense of real cosmic power... and then they completely forget about it, do nothing with it and have done nothing with that ever since

The doctor pulling classic manipulation on Yaz like an abusive partner, and running about like a hyperactive child
The cheesy, childish, coincidence ridden script.
Dan, who is so pushed as being the lovely nice guy that it comes off as creepy and dull.
    The God awful dog costume
The flux itself which has no sense of space, speed, distance and therefore becomes confusing before it's scary.
The many many subplots that have no development which destroys the episodes pacing, focus, and structure, meaning the actually relevant bits need to be rushed.
So ye, overall better than expected

With the visuals and music of this doctor's series, I think they've really tried to make it look like one of those abstract films like Annihilation, etc. Just an observation but it's funny how they're trying this sort of style when you look back at previous iterations like Ecclesto's, Tennant's and Smith's runs, the art style wa very different. You could just see it as doctor who immediately but the new ones are either too green screeny or too abstract to tell it's who. It's a decent idea since the setting allows for it but the execution is odd coming from someone who preferred the aforementioned doctors' series.

I was told going in, that this season was structured like a classic eara season. Multiple episodes covering one long story. As such, my expectations met reality and I found that where previously I'd have to turn off my brain, this season was clearly produced by a team who actually knew what they were doing. Gone are the huge sections of tell don't show. The dialogue feels far less artificial, in some places replaced entirely with body langauge and acting. the show is no explaining basic sci-fi premises, like we're idiot children, and instead assumes your smart enough to understand them, and background elements are put there on purpose to hint at upcoming story elements. Oh, and the cinematography is done by people who actually know how cinematography works. As for the music. Unlike the previous two seasons of elevator music. The music actually matches, sets up and deliberately manipulates the mood. Oh, and best of all, the preachyness has been completely removed.
Unlike the last two seasons, this season was produced by people who are actually competent. The trouble is, after the unmittigated awfullness of the last two seasons, people are emotionally coloured against this doctor, and are understandably hyper criticle of a show that spent 2 seasons insulting it's male audience right to it's face with lines like "Hi, I've had an upgrade." This season is so different, I would not be surprised to find out that chibnal is little more than a figure head.

It's weird. Chibnall's kind of the opposite of Moffat in writing strengths. Moffat is a great dramatic writer but is terrible at building overarching plots when they're his to construct (eg The Silence or the Clara across time plotline in Season 8). Chibnall is awful at writing standalone episodes but is reasonably good at building overarching narratives. Chibnall is good at creating interesting premises (creepy evil Amazon, that Season 11 TARDIS in the desert episode, the witch trial episode etc) but falls flat on the excecution. The guy works best as an overarching executive and head writer managing and refining other people's ideas than as a direct writer at this point.

Your calculations: I guess one could argue it depends how close those ships were to the earth when they formed the sphere around it. How close would you say the ships were when you did your calculations? 😅
Ive noticed people complain and say "well where have the lupari been every other time the earth was in trouble" and initially I'd agree with them. But perhaps in this situation they knew about the Flux way in advance. Every other time things have happened to the earth before they could save the humans. Plus maybe it's a.... Newly established agreement? 🤷‍♂️😅

If we go off the modern series alone.
Series 1: Far future, Daleks come out of hiding, attack the Earth swiftly.
Series 2: Cybermen and Daleks invade, Domestic but very contained. Unlikely the universe would know.
Series 3: This is one plot hole. They have advance warning for seeing as the planet is deemed closed at the start of episode 13 due to extinction. Either that or the Master is too big of a threat.
Series 4: Earth moved from place of origin, they have no idea where it is.
      Series 5: Universe collapsed
      Series 6: Alternative timeline
Series 7: The cubes could’ve been a warning so that could be a potential plot hole.
Series 8: Cybermen appear suddenly, story stays domestic so wider universe doesn’t know.
Series 9: Takes place on Gallifrey
Series 10,: Colony ship away from Earth.
Can’t speak for series 11 and 12, barely seen any of them so someone could inform me. They are a plot hole imo but it’s not like it’s not the worst. :B

@@Kranitokoif we go through Classic who it's gonna be a plot hole either way. Honestly I'm not that bothered by it and I don't think othera should be either. A show going for nearly sixty years is gonna have a ton of plot holes and contradictions sown into it.

I really wish that they gave us 7 more episodes before this one so that the Series would have 13 and be not so ark focused.

Maybe it's because I haven't watched any Chibnall who in 18 months (apart from Revolution of the Daleks which I watched at 2am while Drunk), but this was phenomenally bad, even by Chibnall's incredibly low standards. It reminded me a lot of the Rise of Skywalker, as they're both just an overwhelming barrage of set peices happening back to back to back. It's kind of hard to judge what these plot threads are going to become, but hopefully it can be mildly better than this.

Also WHY can the Doctor just suddenly FEEL the universe breaking??! Ok I get the TARDIS is connected and draws energy from the universe but that’s NOT how the Doctor… works????
