Wonderful to hear this . Ades has many types of composition under his sleeve from Couperin to Korngold sounding here . The opening is really wonderful and how it all comes to be what it is . Makes you relish pure sound ! But even better Ades ' knack for making the memorable with it !
1. Venezia notturna 0:00 2. Das klinget so herrlich, das klinget so schön 2:35 3. Auf dem Wasser zu singen 4:05 4. Et... (tango mortale) 6:35 5. L'embarquement 10:49 6. O Albion 13:30 7. Lethe 17:00
I've tried to get into Thomas Ades several times without connecting with him. This, however, I find absolutely absorbing. Sweet, inventive, original, accessible - how often you do encounter that combination?
Ades. I love you I am one of the musicians following your musical style. In the future, i really want and hope that i will be able to meet you. I am royal college of music master composition student.
This is the first I'm hearing this piece so I may change my mind after a few more listens. However, this sounds so forced to me. As if instead of taking a foothold in 19/20th century tropes, Ades wraps them in "contemporary sounding" effects that make it neither here nor there. It's 20th century music wrapped in 21st century packaging. Somewhat dated, somewhat pastiche. Taking romantic melodies and sprinkle harmonics or the odd glissando around them? Just very incongruent.
Et ces beaux garçons blonds comme les blés, au lieu de boire de la bière dans un pub irlandais, jouent du Ades ! Cette musique bizarre! Quelle idée!...
I like it this time. Now I know I'll be going back again every now and then. THX

An exquisitely written and wonderfully played piece. The recording is just perfect.
Bravo Ades and bravo the Danish String Quartet.

Normally I like the Danish a lot, but for this evocative Ades gem, the Ensemble Perpetuo is tops.
