Several reasons - hands can get sweaty and lose grip over the wheel over time. Some wheels are made of a fabric like suede or alcantara, and the oil of your fingers would destroy the fabric, so the gloves are to protect the wheel. My wheel is made of vulcanized rubber, and the material rubs my skin raw, so I wear gloves to avoid blisters.
You know.. i don‘t get it. You see a wreck infront of you, miles ahead, or get the warning over teamradio/yellow flags and you still go full throttle until the very end… like why? Just brake…
That's me almost murdering Edwin @ :50 -- I was way off line letting him by and the moment I hit the brakes my car spun around. I was so glad he saw me because I was a total passenger at the time and did NOT want to kill P2 from a lap down lol
It wouldn't be the first time I've been killed by a lapped car while leading or as one of the lead cars, hehe. After the finish of that race, I checked back at your POV and yes you did get into the very wet area of the track while braking, hence the sliding. Luckily my eyes caught something in the mirror coming at me quickly and had less than a second to react.

Many factors, immersion, sweat, depends on what your wheel is made of, mine has pretty hard plastic-rubber grips and gloves neutralize it a bit
