Thank you all so much for watching and Grow BIG! - Навчання та стиль
I can't tell you how consoling you are when you voice, "probably should've started them a few weeks ago...ooopsie". We all are busy with our own stuff and we (probably) are all too hard on ourselves when we don't meet expectations, ourselves or other. You're very kind. Thanks for relieving some of the chains!
absolutely agree!!!
So true! Thanks Luke.
💯Every year, I say, “next year I’m gonna start early.”😂😂😂
I've really struggled with my health the last few months and I'm feeling so far behind seed starting and garden prepping and hearing you say "oops, well better late than never" really has me motivated! Thank you!
You deserve a splurge purchase of some flowers! ❤
Hope you feel better soon.
Man, this dude is helping me out a ton. First time starting from seeds.
I cant plant outside till the end of May. Its so tempting to start my seeds too early when everyone on you tube is getting ready to plant outside by early May.
I know the feeling. Last week of May around here too. I learned lots from the video; now I just need to be patient.
first of june for me, often a cold night around memorial day
You could try building some cold frames! Or even a whole little greenhouse/potting shed, if you are allowed to (I'm not 😢 )
Spring time for me is synonymous with tuning into my favourite gardening channels. Thanks for doing what you do!!
I would love to see the analytics page for this channel. The yearly spikes must be huuuuge
I will always watch you because you make gardening so accessible. Keep helping the masses learn to grow the best vegetables and fruits with 100% nutrient content.
I didn’t know that about the scent of cucumber. Very good to know!
I started some seeds yesterday. Inside under lights. Yay!! gardening time!😀
Started my tomato peppers eggplant onions cabbage broccoli kale today for Syracuse NY. Squash will wait till late April. Maybe I'll try some beans also, I tried them a couple years ago but was too early and they got to big indoors. Thanks!
Thanks Luke!
I didn't know that you can start watermelons, cantaloupe and bush beans indoors. That's probably why they really never worked out well for me. I will be getting them started tomorrow!
Gardened 40yrs,1st yr seed startting, MUCH success with verbal coaching from you. Thanx.
I have watched and loved your channel for years. Absolutely love that you grow Zennias for Mrs. MI Gardner because (yes you enjoy them) she loves them, that made me absolutely smile. It's the little things!
I’m planning to grow a Greenstalk of bush beans (whole tower) because I forget to pick them when they’re in the garden. This summer I want them within snacking reach because we love them fresh picked. 😊
My beans did great in the GreenStalk last year. I grew several kinds and they all did well.
Nice ! How many bean seeds per pocket ?
There’s at least 5 starting seasons in cold country.
-Onions and flowers with long starts
-Hot peppers bit later sweets
-Brassicas, lettuce especially for low tunnels
-Tomatoes and quicker flowers.
Then beginning June while we transplant we are starting seeds for fall crops.
Yes my brassicas and cold weather crops get started before peppers and tomatoes accept super hot slow germinating peppers.
@@travisevans7502 wow, you must be able to plant earlier than me. The brassicas grow pretty fast for me. I got a bit crazy with cabin fever and started hot peppers a month early. I will blame UA-cam gardeners in warm areas for that 🤣. Everything is still good except a couple are growing way faster-Megatron Jalapeños are taking off! Never grew that variety and boy are they going!
I need to take notes of which are growing faster so I get that right next year. I will need to put these in grow bags before too long I think. Don’t want them setting veg until they are transplanted. Need to get them out to a cooler greenhouse to slow them down. The sweets I just started so we are good.
The brassicas need potted up today. We are expecting 2-4” of white stuff Wednesday. Hope not too many more snows during April as I would like to try brassicas much earlier this year in a low tunnel. Especially Napa cabbage.
Can’t wait! It’s FINALLY April!🎉
@@dustyflats3832 I plant out brassicas end of March early April just watch forecast it was warmer than usual this year so planted March 27th.
I've heard bush beans are prone to transplant shock? I'm in Colorado so we don't get beans out until mid to late may but I'm planning to start indoors in toilet paper tubes that I can plant directly into our raised beds but still waiting 2-3 more weeks to get them started here
Starting a garden in Grand Rapids and WOW I need to get moving!! We built raisted bed last year but necer got them filled. Looks like I need to order some soil & compost so I can get this garden to happen this year. Thanks for all of the great Michigan information, I really appreciate the knowledge you share for our region!
I started tomatoes and peppers but don't have enough lights to do more. I planted the things in the garden that can be planted now that the cold won't hurt.
Ditto from Athens, OH
Thanks for the info on fennel. I was going to plant directly into the ground but now they are the latest in my seed trays.
I did an experiment one year with beans. Even though the packet did not recommend indoor sowing I did half indoor and half outdoor.
And guess what? Even though the seedlings were a good size, the outdoor beans surpassed the indoor sown by size and vigor!
I am in Zone 6.
If i plant them outside they get plucked and eaten by critters everytime. I have to sow peas and beans inside and transplant when they're about 6 inches tall. The birds and bugs aren't interested in them at that stage
@@DebRoo11Same to me. I prefer outdoor direct sowing. The seedlings are much stronger. But those beautiful sprouts are eaten up by snails🥲 I have been learning how to start seedlings indoor since last year. It has been frustrating I have to admit since my success rate is mediocre.
@@DebRoo11Have you tried placing metal mesh or chicken wire over them? That deters the squirrels, rabbits, deer, ect.
@@ocopera the bigger 'critters' are not hard to keep away, it's the pill bugs, slugs, earwigs etc. that are quite a bit harder. I don't find it stunts the growth of my beans and peas to start them inside for a short bit. The trick is not letting the roots get to the size where they're touching much of the seed tray. It's much better than having to sow five times and not get any plants
PEAS? Too soon for outside? Zone 6a, Michigan. thank you.
Just found your YT channel recently & beyond greatful!
Great information, simply explained. Thank you! Looked up your main location & found your store is only 45 minutes north of where we live! Will be visiting soon!
Unrelated - I ordered Trifecta Plus for the first time today! Excited to try it. I’ve been using Jacks 20-20-20 but was looking for something organic and the reviews sold me. I also raise my own earthworms and use the castings in my garden. I would love a video on the proper way to use fertilizer and all the things and how to use them together. You may already have this video I just haven’t found it yet.
I am just now startinh peppers and tomatoes. They dont go on the ground here in n. Idaho til after Mothers day to the first of June normally. Last 2 years had to wait til 3rd week of June due to cold and rainy weather. Hoping for a more normal Spring this year! Early crops wont get started til the end of April.Except cabbage and a few others. Living up in the hills we run a good 2 weeks behind the valleys. Thanks for the video today!!
You mentioning the seasons of seed starting clicked a light on for me. Sometimes just the right combination of words does it, even if youve probably heard it before in another way. Its why i find value watching these types of videos even if its about stuff ive watched a million times before. Informative and inspirational as always, thanks for the content ❤
I just started a whole tray of flowers - so excited!
That’s awesome!
Because central MN, I use MIG to tell myself it will be 2 weeks after MIG says it’s ok to start. I am so excited for April 15th - the day I do all my beans and corns!! 🥰
Winter sowing works great for herbs and flowers
Always great content Luke. I've never started my beans or cucumber indoors, but you've given me good reason why I should.
I love my dill and camomile ‘forest’ at the back of the garden!
I got my seed tray order and couldn’t be happier! 😁They feel very high quality, durable and they are 1/2 the price of some others.
Plus I can use them with the other, cheaper ones I’ve already purchased because they fit perfectly and will just add strength! No more dropping flimsy trays of seedlings for me, which I’ve done at least twice.
I love following you but only for the wealth of information but also to know when to start my seeds for my Fenton, MI garden! I tend to miss the window for starting certain seeds and seeing your posts is the perfect nudge! Thank you Luke!
ALWAYS learn something new Luke. Another strategy for cuke beetle prevention. Although the mint spray you recommended worked wonders last year!
I’m doing year round growing now. I want to see flowers growing under lights in the winter. 😂
Thank you for all your advice, My family will not go hungry!
Liked at the end when you dropped the seed packets. Fun touch. 😅
Thanks Luke!
I really want to know about acorn squash - start them now indoors, or wait until they can be planted directly in the ground? They seem to need a long growing season. And then, I always lose mine to squash vine borers. How can I avoid this?
I watch almost all of your videos and they're a great help, even though I've bee at this for many years. You're in pretty much the same zone as we are here in eastern Nebraska - except you get a lot more rain most years.
Every time your vids are right on time!👏🙌
So glad!
I am jealous of your location near a large body of water. Here in central Ohio I have 6 weeks before the last frost. If I am lucky, maybe it will be 5 weeks.
U. P. MICHIGAN Last possible frost. June 12
I started zucchini a week ago and I'm worried if I started it too early because it rise from the seed pot like a monster compared to its neighbours and I think I really need to repot it before it goes outside... Last year I sow zinnia too early and I made notes that zinnia should be started 2 weeks later that the stems won't grow as tall indoors. I had to transport them daily to my balcony and then back indoors for them to get bright daylight outdoors before the night temperatures were high enough to leave them outdoors permanently! It was a chore😅 Annual gardening notes are an important tool, because it can be easy to remember something in fall but by the winter you will absolutely forget most of the things you should remember...
Thanks for sharing!💜🙏🏼
Love your videos! I’m learning so much information as a second season of growing a productive garden. Last year we watched lots of videos as we ramped up our gardening after deciding to “Grow big!” We were very successful. I’m turning to your videos again to refresh my memory. Sad to say I made mistakes this year with first seedlings by planting in some 3 inch pots. I’m waiting for my order to arrive of the smaller seed starting trays for round two of planting and I will add trifecta to the seed starting mix. I thought I had to wait to fertilize the seedlings until they emerged and had their true leaves. I will bottom water and additional water soluble fertilize once a week those seedlings until they get transplanted with the trifecta added. Now I know I can avoid the messy step of using water based fish fertilizer which stinks my house…by adding trifecta to my seed starting mix.
Nice to hear we are ok if we are just starting some this week
Always learning from you. Thank you.
Thank you!
I love these timely videos! 👊🏻💥👊🏻
Thank you, Luke! Another wonderful and timely video. Keep up the great work. You are so very appreciated!!
Is there an online class somewhere that's reputable that can teach everything you just said about when to start the different kinds of seeds?
Basically I want the information you just tried to convey but in depth.
I'm not doing anything outside. It's been rainy for months
I just learned about getting cucumbers. That don't even have that enzyme. That attracts The Beatles. You have to get what's called burplus Cucumbers.
Great video, vere helpful. Thanks!
I’m doing non transplant winter sowing in 2,3,and 5 gallon buckets. What survives thrives. I over seed to make up for the ones that don’t germinate or die. I did this last year and I had pretty good success. Most of my flowers have germinated, all my snap peas and snow peas have germinated getting my trellises ready to go. Planted some tomatoes and peppers this weekend, i have more to plant but I need more domes before I can plant. in 2 weeks the beans will go in.
When do you begin your fall squash?
You really make things clear. I appreciate it. I get lost in all the different information that often conflicts. I think I can do this!
I got my Bootstrap trays last week! Amazing how tough they are!!! Thank you!!
Would if your un able to start crops indoors? or in cells? Is it also possible to start in cells and keep outside(Not in green house) Is it still possible to start tomatoes and cucumbers and other crops straight in the soil? Thanks for making great videos.
I've always struggled to find a use for Bush beans, I've only ever grown pole beans with any enthusiasm. But now you have given me a reason for bush beans and I think I might buy some when I'm out today and take your advice. I'm on the North Coast as well so many of your regional tips apply to me.
Thankyou!!!!!!!!
Thanks Luke. It’s good to know I can still start planting my seeds now. I know I’m already behind. And thank you for the tip on the size growing tray to use. 👍🏾
I have planted peas, cilantro, radishes, and spinachs already, all up up except for the cilantro.
Thank you
Thanks
Thanks for the information 👍
thanks!!
Thanks!
Thanks Luke! As always I am constantly learning and your information is golden! Thanks for reminding me to start some of my flowers and the bush bean tip was fantastic! Now I’m itching to get to the greenhouse!
Learned a lot!! Thanks! Even shared. Happy growing! 😊
Thank You Luke.
got a video for that soil mix?
Yay! More seeds
Thanks for another great video Luke !
I can't grow Sugar Baby watermelon to save my life 😂🤣. Of all the things I grow that is one I have retired lol
I usually plant 8-10 densely planted 32` rows of bush green beans for my family each year. Sometimes I also add an additional 4+ 32' rows of pole beans. That's an insane amount of beans! There's no way I could possibly start that many seeds indoors!😂 Unfortunately groundhogs have tunneled into my fenced garden and mowed down my beans the past 2 years.😡 They love them as much as we do!!
I learned!!
Thanks for the tip on beans from Ontario Canada
You are so welcome!
This is very helpful! I usually sow dill and beans in ground and our season is always unpredictable. So I’m about to switch it up and start them indoors first. Thank you!
Keep these videos up. I’m seeding all of them today. Can you talk about cross pollination and seed saving. What’s a good distance away from each other
Thanks great info as always.
Any time! Thanks for watching!
Enjoy the tips of when to plant seeds indoor. 😊😊
How do you manage transplanting your melons? They hate having their roots disturbed so last year my winter sowing success turned into a bit of a failure when it came up transplanting them into the garden.....
Very helpful understanding the rationale for starting plants at specific times and indoors/outdoors!
Thanks for the bush bean info. Last year all of mine rotted that were direct shown. I will start them indoors this year.
Thank you! ❤
You're welcome 😊
Im glad I know now to start my sugar baby bc I didn't know when to start or if I should direct sow into soil. Im new to gardening an these watermelons are my first step away from house plants and hatching fish fry 😅😅 nervous but excited for my michigan garden adventures.
Luke,
I don't have space to sow seeds indoors. I am in VA Zone 7B.
Other than cool weather crops (i.e. lettuce, kale), can you perhaps cover some crops that can be sown now using the winter sowing (in jugs) method?
Thank you. 😊
Luke! Should I plant my potatoes in the garden now?! I’m in the traverse area. It’s so nice I wanna plant stuff but they say last frost is June 😢
I’m so glad to see the seeds you’re starting now!! I thought I started most of mine too late but looking at your selection…yay for me, I’m right on time!! Tho I probably could have started my tomatoes a little earlier, but my indoor planting started March 21 and my seedlings are looking great! I wonder when is it best to start feeding them?
Any suggestions for starting rose aster? All of the other seeds I’ve started (including a bunch from MIGardener) are doing really well but I’ve gotten zero germination with the rose aster twice now. It’s my first time growing them, so I’m assuming there’s something I’m missing about the specific conditions they like for germination. Thanks in advance for your help and for a great batch of seeds overall!
PEAS?? ? Outside for zone 6a or should I start indoors because of bugs/worms? In Michigan. Please and thank you for the reply! ❤
Moving from San Diego to Colorado has been tricky with gardening for me haha! In SD we can grow anything most of the year. But he in Colorado we have a sharp window of when to start and when it all goes to 💩 like overnight haha! Thanks for all the tips Luke!
I believe 'gardener Scott' is based in Colorado. You may want to follow him and see if you can get some regional tips that help smooth the transition.
@@Andrea-si2vs oh yeah I've been watching him for a couple years now!
What size cell are you using for the bush? Beans, melons, etc..
Can you please tell me what manufacturer your high tunnel came from? Do you keep the poly on all year? Sandy
Do bush beans transplant okay? I’ve never tried them as a transplant but am excited to!
Can I start seeds now if my greenhouse isn't heated ?? Michigan zone 5
Yes, I started seeds in an unheated greenhouse a month ago in zone 4b
@@ashleyeahh thank you 🦋
What about winter buttercup squash start in April or May? We live on the west side of Michigan and don’t usually plant in garden until close to Memorial Day.
How do you make that mixture, I have three compost bins. Can you make it from compost. Because seedlings mix , cost so much
Do you actually plant all of your transplants the weekend of your last frost or do you wait a week or two? Our last frost date here in Ann Arbor is always around Mother’s Day but I feel like it always frosts after that, and I absolutely HATE covering my plants, so I’ve been using Memorial Day weekend as my transplant date. Should I then be counting back 5 weeks from that date instead? It just seems so early to plant cucumbers and squash which I feel like grow in 4-5 weeks.
Would watering a raised bed with hot water before planting green bean beans help start them off?
Other than root vegetables, are there any seeds you can't seed start indoors? I keep seeing conflicting information, such as for cucumber, squash, etc.
Question about your seed starting mix do you not use worm castings in your mix and is this based off a seed starting experiment or your own experiences? Is there certain reasons to use or not to use them in seed starting mix? Thank you in advance loving the channel!
Started our stuff last week to sell late April/early May for Wisconsin 😬
Lets go!
