Hey! Thanks for the interest. You could try using willow bark. It performs the same as chestnut, just not as thick. Also silver birchwould be great. If you can't get tree barks you could try plant fibres. Anything that is flat would work great. Let me know how you get on? All the nest Nick

@@NickMcMillen-ef7feI made products from different raw materials, from the bark of spruce, pine and of course from birch, we have this one of the types of folk craft, birch is very good, strong, durable, very beautiful. I made it for myself, spruce and pine bark is very convenient, it is more flexible, durable, once I made a basket in 40 minutes, I had to do it very quickly, I did it literally for a single use, but it still serves, almost 30 years have passed

I am curious if you have an interest in building natural houses, with hand tools? I think you're in the right part of the world for that.
