Interesting. Guess I’ve been casually offending people for years with the “fluttering bird” version of the sign 😅. Also interesting because when we were taught the sign for Germany in school, it was told to us that the “horn on the head” version of the sign was the offensive one because it was often interpreted as the “violent gestapo” version…but I guess that’s what the man with the tattoos was talking about.
Interesting to see that Germans want to use the sign on the forehead and want others to do the same. OK, I’ve learned something today. I’ll try to remember to use the single hand sign and not the two handed‘bird’.
With ASL there're two problems with the deutsche gebardsprache sign for "Germany". First, years ago I interpreted a "History of Berlin" course. Imagine how many times the professor said "Germany" .... Most ASL signs are in front of the body and the German sign for Germany is too far away to sign and still keep up with the professor. The motion simply takes too long. The interpreter falls behind. Second, in ASL the signs suggests an erection or a dildo sitting on a person's head. More than once I've had Deaf people giggle when I used that sign. I don't mean to offend, these two facts might be part of the reason the correct sign for "Germany" has not become popular with ASL users.
