27:49 the way he swings the snare giving that groove on the drum is actually a Dilla signature, Jacob talked about how he's inspired a lot by hip hop ! He does an excellent job at blending elements from different music eras/genres together it's mind blowing
And that’s incredibly hard to communicate, the blending of straight and swung feels, within a bar. I am blessed with a great musical ear, and I can see Jacob realizing how hard it is to communicate that feel, as he shows him. It’s extremely intricate feel. It’s what J Dilla mastered by forgoing massive quantization.
He's so humble too, it's like music is the diva and he's just his most faithful servant.
As the artist should be! Attentive to his art and not to the posterity or reception of the art.
Spot on
Such a perfect way of phrasing it. He is the vessel for the music and lets it flow through him at its own will.
So so so true, crazy what he's done with his limited resources and time... crazy

It's kind of depressing to me as a musician because Jacob's mixing of an extremely intellectual and an extremely emotional approach to music is exactly what I want to achieve and I know I will never achieve it in the same way he does.
Thanks for the comment! Use this video as an inspiration! Know that only you can be the type of musician you want to be. There is only one you, so be the best at it! Please subscribe to see more great inspirational content.
there's more than one branch in the tree and you may find you achieve that but just in your own way, or in a way you never expected, keep pushing for it my dude
that's where youre wrong
you shouldnt do it the way he does
do it the way you would
But at the same time he offers hope and inspiration , take your own piece of what hes offering and apply!
Douglas Lawrie Music is not a competition! lol look at it as a way to always have something to work towards.
2:00
Interviewer: Jacob, you’re one of the most creative artists in modern music, here at MIT, hub for the world’s sharpest intellectuals. What do you have to say about your experience so far?
Jacob: These guys think about stuff
I was so distracted by the music and marveling at the level of creativity that I wish I had, it never even crossed my mind to question why one of the vocalists was wearing a cow costume.
whahahahah That came to my Mind lol
Because in his real music video when he plays the cow bell he wears a cow shirt.
BBrown4 - A couple of people in the chorus are wearing goofy hats with costumes, and others are just very colorful or patterned in their clothing, like Collier, with his signature vibrant colors and wild clothing, all of which makes a great contrast to the black-clad instrumentalists. But, yes, the music is so creative and captivating that you could almost miss all that.
How lucky I wasn't having a sip of coffee when I read that. lol
I was triggered by the outfits... I was like 'what's wrong with a fucking tie, it's about the music not your sore-thumb-sticking-out narcissism!'
But really I'm just super duper jelly... of everyone in this video...
Watching Jacob Collier is a mixture of jealousy, admiration, joy and confusion!
Ha! So true...
They need to release the full uninterrupted performances at MIT. Too brilliant to be chopped into tiny nuggets of gold.
Total chills! Hideaway is one of the greatest pieces of contemporary music I've ever heard: filled with thrilling harmonic and rhythmic surprises and details, yet always making sense and staying heart-felt as it evolves. And Jacob Collier? True genius. Stay long enough to hear him talk about how his mother introduced him to Music!
“For this kind of music all you need is” *plays something instantly more complicated than I can play*
What a GREAT addition to have mr. Sharifi discuss the arrangement and the original song structure. Very, very informative. Love it!
Jacob Collier is a gift to this world. He is one of the most generous musicians ever, and we are so, so lucky to share time with on this earth. He gives all that is within him to the universal language of music, sharing it with everyone. Wow.
I never thought I would be able to see how music as a concept will look as a person. This man not only is a musical genius, but in addition to that he doesn't come across as a person who is in any way "bound". Just like music, he's liberating.
I think he's one of the most inspirational and talented musicans ever. I'm so obsessed with his music lately. What a wonderful human being he is!
I want to see this man compose a movie score
23:51 the violinist’s reaction to the unexpected really jazzy chord he played
Imagine having the joyful privilege of being a part of that. Such moments can be life-changing for young musicians. Inspirational and reinvigorating; like jet-fuel to their imagination and creativity. They will remember that performance for the rest of their lives, and it will influence their work in untold ways. 30+ years from now, we'll see interviews from these students where they wax poetic about this experience and the impact it had on their work. Also, what an amazing professor to arrange this for his students!
I just discovered this music man. More beautiful music in my life. Wonderful
Anyone else have a nice morning cry?
Aaron Lewis hey dude I must've missed this. I wish I could say something to that, apart from that I'm so glad you felt that way too and I hope that you're happy.
Shed manly tears at 5:30
I literally cried. Oh my God!
Yes! Oh man, I thought I was the only one. Its 5 am now.
Oh my... amazed...bold, risk taker, inventer, inviter, complex, simple. So many levels, full feeling. Mind reelin', celebrating the introvert thinkers of MIT. Thanks for hosting, recording, and posting..."the Jacob Construct" just incredible that all this exists in a single person
..I can't even imagine his potential, once in a lifetime kind of people that change the way you look at things...inspiring...there is real divinity in the world. Amen to that. And thanks JC
What a talented little man.
Mozart , Bach , stravinsky,
Jazz all in one.
Super !
little?
@@Ana_crusis young
@@biocykle eh?
@@Ana_crusis I think/hope by "little" he was referring to Collier's youth. He was born in 1994.
@@biocykle extremely unlikely. We would never use the word little to mean young , at least not unless you were talking about a toddler
Protect this human at all costs
I absolutely love Jacobs music and seeing all the appreciation that he gets from MIT is wonderful. This video made my day
I feel like I have sinned for just now discovering Jacob Collier. I have no words.
Damn that drum entrance at 30:43 . That is awesome. Perfect. The tempo change is So hard but he absolutely nails it.
a highly acclaimed drummer
Lmao eighth notes and looking at the conductor are hard? Also it's called a drum fill
One of those rare talents that appear every 100 years or so. Genius.
Every bit of this is gold dust! Thanks for sharing it.
When music, or anything, makes me grin ear to ear like Jacob's harmonies and rhythms do, I know I have found that sweet spot of meaning in this world: pure joy! YES to LIFE! Pure heaven.
I was expecting the conductor to look like he was having a nervous breakdown. Not a chance, he was having fun!
don't necessarily like every single arrangement he does, but the man is a complete genius of otherworldly proportions. Incredible.
This kid is incredible. But...I think part of the magic people are feeling here has nothing to do with his talent. It’s that these people are connecting to deeper harmonies and structures than they get in the worn out pop music today. More people need to dig into jazz, blues, gospel, funk, R&B, etc. Jacob has great facility across the board, and I think that’s why he’s creating such flavorful stuff. It’s like adding a little bacon, chives and sour cream to that boring old potato. The toppings aren’t new, but most people are just used to shoving an overdone, plain ball of starch into their face.
I think youre exactly right but I think that is precisely where his genius lies. Im not a huge fan of jazz but he expresses complexity in a way that has a easy listening feel. He never lets tension be unresolved and always has the feeling of the song at the forefront of his compositions. I think the admiration at 9:25 is why i love his music so much. He has an ability to flavor his songs like no one ive ever come across. His talent is his ability to blend elements from all the genres you mentioned into what appears to be a pop song.
It's pretty new though. And it has a ehole lot to do with his talent, soul and creativity.
...adding bacon to potato? Not sure if that is the metaphor.
billion genius I disagree . What people are checking into is Jacob Collier. There is only one. Yeah he has influences like every great musician but the way he expresses them is him. I
You make it seem like these guy's are listening to these styles for the first time. These are jazz students for crying out loud, they're familiar with the style.
mataphor is not bad ...
I so need this right now. This video, this music just gets me out of this solitary confinement and anxiety of a pandemic and straight into the sweetest spot of life and love. This is sheer balm, remedy, luscious savior healing music. Thank you!
This videos left me at a complete stand still in my head, just breathtaking
Not to mention this kid single handedly smacks the crap out of the commercial pop music industry with ease.
I've never had the privilege of watching Jacob live or coming to MIT, but man is this video so nostalgic of a pre-corona world where we got to convene in person and get lost in the music made together. Even watching this video is euphoric but I'm sure there are so many senses about this experience that a video cannot capture.
Jacob Collier is a God!
What an endlessly inspiring, mind-blowing genius of a production
I love watching the joy in the faces of the singers singing with him!!!! WOW!!
Never heard of Jacob Collier untill now. Usually i listen to progressive rock and such. This guy is amazingly talented. And seems like a very nice young man with little to no arrogance to boot. Reminds me somehow of Brian Wilson around the pet sounds/smile record era. I wouldnt be surprised to hear him ask: "Can we get a horse on stage. I need the sound of a horse".. Lol. I certainly hope Jacob Collier's life forward will continue being successful and nothing like Brian Wilsons was for many years.
I have only one word to describe this video and this young man. "Brilliant!"
How about fawkingincomparable?
I'm a 59 yer old musician and engineer. What a time to be alive....
Commented in English and Spanish.
This guy inspires me day by day to be a better musician. This video simply made me cry from start to finish. I do not know when I became a fan of Jacob. But the admiration I have for him is so much. When Snarky Puppy's "Family Dinner Vol 2" came out (my favorite group), I was one of the first to hear it. As soon as it sounded "Do not you know" I said "This guy is pure magic, he will be very recognized, it is pure gold". I could not believe the quality of its composition, the complexity in its metric and the instrumental arrangements! I wish Jacob the best, he is an admirable young man, incredible!
Right on man, the video made me so emotional. Its incredible stuff.
There was a time, years ago, when i thought that Bobby McFerrin is a musical Genius.
And then i found Jacob Collier.
We need to protect this man at all cost. He is a gift to the world.
What an incredible video. Thank you for sharing this amazing experience.
Whao. You're amazing. I love this kind of music.
the most beautiful human being
23:48- Most natural and beautiful reaction ever in the background!
he really IS music.
Jacob plays the lick at exactly 18:54
Man he has to play that rythme and melody whilst listening to the stuff he just played seconds ago. It's like a speechjammer!
Beautiful! Amazing work.
This kid has got Gifts so many from above or whatever you believe in
30:28 _"you say that i'm a lobster"_
June Lee made that joke too.
Matthew Taylor Yes, that's what I was referencing
My bad
You say that im an oyster
LOL
18:52 when you hear it.
Not hearing it. I think. Care to give a hint?
seheyt the lick
OH MY DAYS 😂
THE LICK
Literally right before i clicked the timestamp i thought "please not the lick." You mastermind.
I enjoy how often he messes up his own lyrics at live shows haha
I live the guy singing "YEAAAAAH" behind, he's soo into it 😄
No guile. There is a purity in Jacob. Wow!
One word: Amazing
1:36 "Love that chicken from Popeyes"
18:53 the lick
No. Not the licc. It's close but not really
Jacob Collier is THE most incredible magician of all music... He transforms notes to feelings; rhythms to heartbeats; theory to intuition. Even if I practice music every hour of every day for the rest of my existence I will never be able to play even one NOTE as well as Jacob Collier. He is literally God and I worship him. Bliss.
I get sad when I see videos of Jacob. He is so incredibly talented. I am sure any other musician get's the same sort of envy of his natural instinct. Makes me feel so inadequate as a song writer.
You have company. I am stunned by his ability and works and I probably love him, but I am angry that ONE should be so blessed.
I’ve been living under a rock cause I’ve been in music for 8 years now and this is the first I heard of this guy.
You must've
He's an inspiration for us all and for the music world, can't wait to see what is ahead for him!!!
so much better live than studio albums!!!
Beautiful, thanks for this video.
Awesome environment omg
I’m old! Never heard of this guy until now.
The makers of this documentary could've released a video of the Hideaway recording without the commentaries
I'd rather write words that invite people to understand them rather than project my understanding onto other people.
This made me cry
He is so Humble
Jacob! What a genius!
Who are 413 sick people to push unlike button for this amazing video?
If music doesn’t work out for this Jacob guy he could be a world class beatboxer
Choir dude in the cow outfit is the real star here.
12:00
14:00 Blackbird
17:55 I would rather write words that invite people to undersrand them rather than project my understanding onto other people
The drumer never got Jacobs fill
Bravo, Fred!
Pretty ingenious, but he's riding that pretension line pretty hard.
18:27
don't mind me
Do we think we could be looking at our age/time Mozart in the making? Because Jacob seems to have it all. And a great personality as well. An all-round genius.
Just Amazing!
The guy is a genious!!
Watching people like him makes me realize that all of us are born into this world for a reason, no matter how big or small it is, we all have a purpose. This dude has found it early on and is serving his life to music.
Oh damn so he can play every instrument? Ok i get it now
Jacob discovered music , it wasn't taught at him, is how he describes it
I do t understand his music but I do appreciate his talent
23:45 The Violin Girl reacts to Jacob's Chord..
I feel a little guilty saying this, but while I deeply appreciate Jacob's incredible technical abilities and creativity, I find the final product far too manic and ultimately unpleasant to listen to. It could do with a little more patience and simplicity. It's easy to say, well when someone is exploring novel territory it can make us feel uneasy, but there are many talented innovators in music who are able to explore while keeping the music thematic and cohesive. Those compositions are still a pleasure to listen to without needing an advanced degree in music to appreciate them. I suppose the key takeaway is that being different, even in a highly competent way, doesn't gaurantee a beautiful piece of music in the end.
The guilt you're feeling is very much necessary, no one criticizes Collier without consequence
Nah I can agree man, I feel that the arrangement is more to please the ones executing it
Boy, does Brian Wilson come through sometimes
Anouman I thought so as well.
Is there any way I can listen to just the audio performances?
I am convinced this man can see music. Not in a drugged up kind of way, but like the same way they do that effect with all the numbers and algorithms flying around the scientist character in an animated movie, but instead with notes and time signatures. Like this mans first language is music theory not english
21:57 The teacher/conductor is having the time of his life lmao.
The way he typed on that laptop had rhythm lol
Gość z talentem.....Wszystkie dziewczyny Jego( widać po materiale ....) ...bez bajery ...wystarczy że zagra!!! ....nie daj boże że zaśpiewa!!!!...Super patent:)
Anyone who knows music (I don't) help me out. There was a moment back in '69 when I discovered Jazz/Rock fusion and the band Weather Report. What I am seeing here is what I remember of that group. Joe Zawinul, the American saxophonist Wayne Shorter and Czech bassist Miroslav Vitouš (eventually to be replaced by Jaco Pastorius). That music was incredible. Am I wrong that this is similar to Weather Report or the Mahavishnu Orchestra? I am not trying to diminish Collier and his ability, just wondering if some of what they did fifty years ago was the same sort of creative effort.
The vacuum cleaner story, thats how i want to raise my child
The 21st century Mozart, I think.
This man even types with rhythm 14:48
Jacob at MIT: "These guys think about stuff"
love him
