    my fellow chloworkers~
    man, i really outdid myself with this video. it's like 3 videos worth of information jampacked into one. it's so hard to talk about comp without talking about how it's structured too. hope the crash course was helpful! I really took quite a bit of time curating offers and verifying these ranges with my pm friends who work at these companies. i'd take some of these stats with a grain of salt esp at the higher end. i also did not consider stock appreciation, refreshers, or promotion packages. some packages can truly vary!!
    i really hope this video helps inform how you own your career and compensation no matter what role you're in. money is an extremely sensitive topic that i've always dodged, and that honestly hasn't helped me. i also know that pm salaries are very kept within our inner circles and that's not great for promoting this career path to people who don't already have the resources and connections. rootin' for you wherever you are in life ~
    if you haven't noticed already, i've done a TON of back-to-back career vids and i've been ITCHING to sprinkle some fun life vlogs this next month (yes i have a life outside of work, okay). i really wanna add more lifestyle things on this channel. lmk if you have anything you wanna see. as a teaser, i have a special v-day one hehe. stay tuned! (also happy early lunar new year)

    Thank you for this video! It's so important for PMs and folks aiming to break into the PM career to know the TC range for varying levels at these companies. I'm a Sr. PM at Amazon (7 total yoe, 2 yoe as a PM) and can attest the TC you shared for Meta and Google seem accurate. Always recommend people to look at Blind for discussions around offers and TC structure to get a better baseline based on their location. Happy to discuss insights about Amazon if you're curious!

    • @chloeshih
      @chloeshih  2 роки тому +3

      Lawrence!! Wow, thanks so much for attesting to the TC ranges. Appreciate you sharing your YOE and role!! Helps a bunch with understanding ranges and baselines. I had a couple questions from people about Amazon, but I don't really have Amazon PM friends in my network. I wasn't sure if the Levels.fyi guide was truly representative across the board, but lmk if you think it's about right!

    • @its.lorence
      @its.lorence 2 роки тому +3

      @@chloeshih Yep, they're directionally accurate on Levels.fyi. The challenging aspect of TC at Amazon is that the base salary is capped at a certain amount regardless of your level. Due to this, some employees' TC can be comprised of 40-60% stocks (or even larger % the higher your level). This makes TC hard to gauge for existing employees or for new offers when the company's stock price experiences significant movements (e.g. in 2020 vs. this month).

    Hey, I'm a software engineer that watches your videos out of interest. I think a cool video to make would be discussing opportunities as a PM at Big Tech (FAANG and Big N) vs. Unicorns/Start-ups. Doesn't have to focus on compensation, but major differences overall. I've had to make this decision for myself as a new grad between popular unicorns vs. Big N (ex/ Pinterest and Netflix)

    Hi Chloe! Thank you again for putting together yet another insightful video!! Money can definitely be a sensitive subject, but you're totally right about the need for transparency especially for people who don't have access to those resources and connections. I really admire and respect your story coming from a low-income background, lacking financial literacy, to being financially independent and supporting your brothers + parents livelihood and education!! I definitely relate to this part and I'm two years post-grad, so I'm hoping I can also do something similar for my family as I educate myself in financial literacy and try to make these career moves. Looking forward to your next videos and I'm excited to watch whether they're career related or lifestyle! Thanks again for sharing x

    I just want you to know that, when I first graduated in 2020, not knowing what to do, I saw a brief clip of one of your videos and thought I needed more research on the tech industry. Now after trying to be a full stack developer, trying data engineering, trying out to be a quality assurance for a video game company, and trying to finish a UX design certificate, it all in the end brought me back to your videos on product management. I know this is what I want to do now after all those experiences because of people like you who give out so much information, not inaccurate, but carefully picked and spread thoughtfully. I am a design manager at Meta (12 yoe), transitioned over from PM side to design side for the love of design craft but doubt comes up in my mind whenever I see the comp comparison between the two roles. Haha thx for sharing. Agree this is in range with what I’ve seen as the PM TC.

  • @HiPriscilla

    Hey Chloe, wow thank you for this video & for doing all this research - super informative! I’m a PM at a ~100 person startup in the Bay Area (w/ 2y exp) and wow, my jaws also definitely just dropped to the ground looking at the TC numbers you shared - I had no idea Google/Meta PMs got paid and I think it gives me a lot of perspective. Would love to get a video on what you’ve seen other startups offer even if I know it wildly ranges - while I agree money may not be everything, it’s certainly important to know if you’re being compensated fairly with others in your area! Thanks again for doing what you do 🙏

    • @chloeshih
      @chloeshih  2 роки тому

      hi priscilla! of course - yes! I'm not exactly sure how I'll package the other offers. honestly I can't really say that there are trends for me to point out. it is quite possible to be paid higher than at faang because faang ladders are pretty rigid. you can also "supposedly" get promoted faster at startup environments, get to management level, and hop on over to faang so you don't have to go through the years to reach that comp bracket. AND there's stock appreciation, which is a huge component to jumping on pre-IPO unicorns that will like triple your stock value. it's just such a complicated topic. I only really touched upon offers too. but i will say that knowing what you're worth at the faang levels helps negotiation conversations with startups too. you'll know what numbers they're benching at.

    I didn't see this question in the comments, have you found being remote changes the salary? $300,000 is a lot where I live in NC, but definitely doesn't hold the same value in San Francisco. Do companies change their salary and offerings depending on if the job is remote or not?

    • @chloeshih
      @chloeshih  2 роки тому +1

      Yeah! Well it depends. Some companies are paying remote the same wages (like Reddit). But most tech companies will give you a pay cut depending on what tier the city is in. So I think SF and NY are Tier 1. They get 100%. LA and Seattle are like Tier 2. So the cut might be 5-10% less. And this goes on.

      I think if you truly understand your users, then it's not hard to come up with new ideas and innovations for products. You'll get feedback really fast for user pain points. If you're monetization or growth driven, you can look at growth funnels and see where the leaky points are, etc. You also just need a very clear understanding of goals to drive the right ideas.

      And typically this equity "vests" over time, meaning the longer you stay, the more stocks or options you get. They're sometimes called "golden handcuffs" because you're rewarded more for staying at a company longer.

    I've been searching for this numbers for a while and I'm glad you shared them, Chloe! But I guess they vary a lot from country to country. I am an APM in a big tech company in Brazil and, doing some quick math here, I can assure you that my TC is less than US$ 30k (our currency is really devalued right now). It is a whole different scenario, I think it is not fair to make this comparison at the end of the day. But it makes me think of seeking oportunities abroad.
