I think of all the content to react to on UA-cam, anything related to history is probably best. We have a foggy recollection of our history, not jus tin the US, but as a species in the planet. We don’t really know our history and it’s our history that drives so much of the things going on in the world today.

28:33 that’s true. Lee wrapped some of his battle plans into cigars and gave them to messengers on horseback to deliver to his officers. We believe one such cigar with the plans fell out of a messenger’s saddle bag while riding, where it was found by Union scouts.

27:32 I researched this as part of my masters thesis. This was known as the Trent Affair, and it’s as close as the U.K. ever got to entering the war on the south’s side. Two confederate diplomats, named Mason and Slidell, evaded the union blockade to go to London and convince the government of PM Lord Palmerston to provide further aid to the confederacy (the Palmerston government was already providing the confederacy with uniforms, guns, ammunition, and even entire battleships for the confederate navy). Mason and Slidell boarded the British mail carrier RMS Trent in Havana. Though the US navy had been told to give up the search if they boarded a British ship, the USS San Jacinto, under the command of Captain Wilkes, tracked down the Trent, fired two warning shots, boarded the ship, and arrested Mason and Slidell.
The news of the Trent Affair outraged the British government. Foreign Secretary Lord John Russell (already a staunch confederate sympathizer) pressured Lord Palmerston to seek a declaration of war against the USA. Palmerston sent an additional ten thousand troops to Canada and issued an ultimatum: Mason and Slidell must be released and sent to Britain or there would be war.
President Lincoln disliked Mason and Slidell for being slave owners and, much to the chagrin of Secretary of State William Seward, wanted both men to be hanged. Lincoln brought the matter before his cabinet, and when all the cabinet members said they should give in to the British demands and release the diplomats, Lincoln (to Seward’s significant surprise) agreed. When Seward asked the president why he suddenly changed his mind, Lincoln replied “I found I could not construct an argument that would satisfy my own mind. This told me your ground was the correct one” (further evidence that governance is a lost American art). Mason and Slidell were released from prison and put on a British battleship, and with that, the Trent Affair was over.

It’s been a few years, but I recall finding some of the information in “the Later Correspondence of Lord John Russell,” edited by George Peabody Gooch. Russell was a real piece of work. Prior to being Palmerston’s foreign secretary, he was once prime minister himself. His mishandling of the potato blight in Ireland caused thousands to die and his whole political party to collapse, all due to his callousness (“Alas!” Russell wrote in a letter, “the Irish have been taught many bad lessons, but few good ones!) suffice to say, this callousness carried over into his handling of relations during the American civil war.

I know it's just a simplified overview but it still irritates me that he dismissed Winifield Scott as a fat old man who was too old to run the military. When they show the plan to defeat the South, they showed a snake going up the Mississippi river. That was the Anaconda Plan devised by Scott. Everyone hated him for it because the northern people and politicians expected the North to just march into Richmond and put down the rebellion easily. Scott was talking about a long, drawn out process that would take years. But ultimately, the North won the war by sticking to his plan pretty much exactly.

History is important because it helps you understand the world today. Not only do you have a complete picture of how we got to where we are, but you will recognize patterns from history of things that are going on today. And when you recognize those parallels, you have a more clear picture of where we're heading. So it not only helps you understand the past and the present, but also the future.

He left out that Lee agonized over his decision, though in the end he was firmly a Virginian first, so when Virginia left, so did he. Also living in Springfield, MO, only a few miles from Wilson's Creek, while that was a Confederate win, the Confederate forces were so weak from that battle that the Union won the battle of Springfield not too long after that. Also, Missouri's elected government had officially joined the Confederacy, however the Union army headed by General Nathanial Lyon (who died at Wilson's Creek, and we have a monument to him in our National Cemetery in Springfield) had put the Confederate state government on the run where they hid out in Arkansas. The Union army then put in place a provisional pro-Union state government, which is how it remained until the end of the war.
Sorry for being so long winded... this is kind of my area of knowledge...

One thing he makes a mistake on is the orginal reason for the war. Southern crops such as cotton and tobacco at the time were becoming much sought after the world over. This gave the southern plantations a large amount of income and influence the northern government couldn't control which was leading major friction. While the large plantations owned slaves the majority of the south were just simple poor farmers and many were turning against the idea of slavery before the war started. Even the Confederate general Robert E Lee refused the practice and when his dad died leaving him his plantation he freed the slaves who lived there.

The point of learning history isn't to "use it", but to avoid repeating mistakes and to understand how things came to be, as well as develop a cultural identity.
For example, I think it's interesting that although the ancient Roman Empire had slaves, they looked at them completely differently. There were only two types of slaves in the Roman Empire. Those captured in battle and a few people who actually sold themselves into slavery to pay a debt. To ensure their wife and children had enough to survive on, for example. That was rare though. There was nothing racial about Roman slaves. Also, the children of their slaves were free, and could even become citizens. That's a huge contrast to slavery in America (which was started by the UK BTW), where they saw slaves as cattle. The whole concept of black people being an "inferior race" was invented by slavers and taught to society, exactly the way the concept of "don't rat to the police" was and is taught by gangs in modern society. That concept did not exist until the gangs decided to start teaching it, for obvious reasons.

Africans sold their own people to the Europeans, so it is not clear on whether the Europeans would have forcefully taken Africans from Africa and bring them to the new land, if the Africans did not want to sell their own people. The US could have been a very different country, possibly not the power that it is today.

1: January 4th, 1861. Anticipating Alabama's immediate secession. Governor A.B Moore ordered the state militia to seize federal property at mount Vernon arsenal. Fort Morgan and fort Gains effectively putting Mobile bay in Confederate control
2: January 6th, a group of armed men barged into the federal arsenal at Apalachicola, Florida. And demanded the keys to the armory
3: January 10th, weeks before Louisiana's secession, state militia seized the u.s arsenal at baton rouge on orders from the governor. The following day they seized forts Jackson and St. Philip which guarded the mouth of the Mississippi.
4: January 13th, armed Mississippians took forcible control of the unfinished federal fort on ship island
5: January 24th, Georgia militia seized the Augusta arsenal

9: April 15th, president Lincoln called for a 75k for 3 months service to suppress the rebellion

The problem is the majority of people today chalk up the Civil War as just a war about slavery. It was a lot more than that. There were several other major issues that led to the war. Slavery was a big deal, but it was kinda the straw that broke the camel's back. One of the key issues the North and South disagreed on was how the government should run. The Union wanted a more centralized government. I.E. The Federal Government. The Confederacy wanted a Federation, where States govern themselves. The Union used slavery as a tool for propaganda and war. "FIGHT FOR THE NORTH!!! EARN YOUR FREEDOM!!!"

    • @0816M3RC
      @0816M3RC 3 роки тому +2

The South wanted states rights so they could decide for themselves to keep slavery. They ironically hastened the destruction of slavery by attacking the North.
"The important thing that everyone here needs to remember is to not erase the past."
How is the past being erased?
Destroying some statues doesn't erase the past, there are plenty of pictures and written accounts of the Civil War. Those don't go away just because some statues to traitors get destroyed.
How did you learn about the Civil War? I doubt it was from a Confederate monument.
"The EASIEST WAY TO DESTROY A COUNTRY, is to erase its past." Once again that isn't what is happening.
Actually the easiest way to destroy a country is with nuclear weapons.
How EXACTLY does destroying these statues cause the destruction of America?
"And that's exactly what people today are trying to do to the U.S."
Nope. Why are you so desperate to keep these traitor's statues up?

"No reasonable person walks by a Civil War monument and goes YAY! SLAVERY!!! WOOHOO!!! ALRIGHT!!!"

"But the only way you're going to be able to build a better tomorrow is to learn from the past."
The problem with that is that people are worshipping the past!! They aren't "learning from it", they are trying to return to it.
We need to be able to move on and taking those statues down is an important step.
It is a message to show that we as a nation no longer idolize the racist "values" of the Confederacy.
It has been over a hundred years since the Confederacy was defeated and we still haven't completely banished it's influence.
