when I hear the main chorus, I imagine a soldier, deployed to a place destroyed long ago, in search of something long lost. It's night, and he's sitting by a fire, writing in his journal, a way of passing the endless hours of the night, a picture of his wife in the cover, reminding him of the life he has away from this forsaken place, and giving him a place to return when his mission is complete.
i think of a war veteran who came back but cannot assimilate back into society, and spends his day waiting to find meaning in his life.
To me, I imagine a soldier in a war zone without his helmet on, his face covered with blood and scars, his eyes dark like he got so used to war, and behind him is his dead comrades with dark eyes all looking at us like we are the enemy towards them.
