What is My Vocal Classification? - Get Your Range Now! Are you a Soprano, Mezzo Soprano, Alto, Tenor, Baritone or Bass?
A common question I frequently get from you is “What is my vocal classification? Am I a soprano, mezzo soprano, alto, tenor, baritone or bass?”
Inside this video I’ll sing or play the notes for each vocal classification so you’ll know the range of your voice. Come find your range.
Hi, I’m Chuck Gilmore with Power To Sing.
I’ll sing or play the notes for each vocal classification. You sing along to see where your voice is most comfortable. Where you can sing the most notes without breaking or straining, is your current range as of today.
As a guide, I’ll use Seth Rigg’s book, Singing for the Stars, page 77. He gives average performing ranges for each voice. Soprano, mezzo soprano, alto, tenor, baritone and bass.
After I sing or play the notes for your vocal range, at the end of the video I’ll explain what it means for your voice and why it’s important.
What is My Vocal Classification? - Get Your Range Now!
On average:
Basses should be able to sing: E2-G4
Baritones should be able to sing: G2-B4
Tenors should be able to sing: C3-E5
==========================
==========================
Altos should be able to sing: C3-C6
Mezzo Sopranos should be able to sing: G3-Eb6
Sopranos should be able to sing: G3-F6
On average, these are the pitch ranges for these vocal classifications. You should be able to sing these notes without straining, cracking, breaking or falsetto.
I don’t like to classify voices right away. Here’s what Mr. Riggs says: “It’s wrong to prematurely classify a voice before you really get to know what it can do. Too often, existing range is the sole determining factor in placing a singer into a certain category.”
That’s what happened to me. I had a bass range, but couldn’t sing above the E above middle C.
Once I learned how to sing through the first and second bridge of my voice I was able to not only sing the bass range, but I discovered I had many tenor notes as well.
There are other factors than your range in determining your vocal classification. Mr. Rigg’s goes on to say: “The most important factor to consider is the basic quality of the voice. Assuming that your speaking voice is clear and unforced, your singing voice should be based on the quality of that speaking voice.”
In my case, after learning to sing through the bridges and picking up an extra octave of notes, the quality and depth of my speaking voice, and the heft in my singing voice, especially on my lower notes, means that I am more than likely a basso cantante, or a bass with tenor notes.
If you haven’t learned to bridge, how do you know what notes you are able to sing without straining, breaking, cracking or falsetto?
It’s very likely your range will increase like mine did once you learn how to sing through the bridges.
So just because your voice seems to be alto, mezzo, baritone, or bass it might change as you develop your ability to sing through the bridge.
A great starting point to learning to bridge is to determine your vocal type. [For more about bridging, watch the video on the card]
Vocal Type
Do you know your vocal type? Your vocal type is not your classification. It’s a description of what your voice tends to do when you sing through the bridge of your voice.
To discover your vocal type, go to PowertoSing.com and take the vocal test which I call the PowerTest. Take the quiz and get your vocal type. Then go to the Knowledge Center and watch the videos about your vocal type.
Download the free exercises for your vocal type and start practicing them. They will help you learn to sing through your bridge. This is the first step to increase your range.
What do you think your vocal range is today? Soprano, mezzo soprano, alto, tenor, baritone, bass? Write it in the comments section below.

Thank you sir. I want to learn to sing. I am 82 years old and like to sing. Never had lessons and no one ever asked me to sing. I will follow your videos and see what I can pick up. thank you. Jerry Kyle
Good luck Gerald!
82?damn...
Don't strain too much ok?
How you coming
along bud?
Gerald Kyle I’m 13 and want to learn to sing, you’re never to old or too young too start
Gerald I'm 65 and going to try --have enrolled with UK's Opera North "Couch to Chorus" 4 week programme this summer Best wishes
He sounds like dr. Phil and the fitness gram pacer test combined.
Hummmmmm tell me more.
So accurate lol
I'm never sure what my vocal range is so i appreciate these videos.
Hi Alex! Glad it helped!
When I was in school I was an alto for 3 years and then my teacher said I was a soprano and now I'm not sure.
I always thought I was an alto, turns out I've been a tenor MY WHOLE LIFE (I'm young though so yeah, not too many years)
That explains why I can barely sing in the choir, most girls are altos and sopranos and I'm just sitting there with my baritone friend trying to sing
If you are a girl, chances are you are a contralto...if you can sing as low as the tenors.
I’ve always had the same issue trying to sing alto parts but can never get up that high. I can always get the tenor parts spot on though
Edit after one year: yes, I'm a contralto, you were right. I just didn't know the name contralto existed
@@sammatthews3964 Yea he said contraltos go all the way to c6 that's way too high for me I can't do g5 for long periods let alone anything in 6
@@sammatthews3964 and he said baritones start at f2 that's pretty similar to mine I start at f2. I prefer to sing baritenor s over female not that deep of a baritone but sometimes tenors can get too long into the 5th octave for too long. Contraltos are definitely much too high often but sometimes contraltos sing lower so I can sing that but they can sing pretty high which I can't do all that
G2 - G5 (in head voice). The head voice G5 upset my wife and cats.
lol! Yes I understand!
Thank you!!!! I thought I was just a bad singer. Now, I know I was singing way too high.
Thanks Chuck! And thanks for setting the time slot regarding the live session!
Hi Paul! Yes I'm committed!
this was great, thanks for helping me classify so I can sing with my daughter's choir in a family sing (Baritone to tenor, I think!)
This video is really helpful! Id say im currently a tenor, with little to no training, so I think my voice is capable of much more. Really cool video
Great! Good Luck C David!
Right now it's Alto. But mostly it's because I am not singing as much as I used to, so I'm losing some of it. This will definitely help me comeback so I can increase without hurting my voice. I'm almost 53 so I have to be careful.
You're making me do that ah ah ah ah ah, but then when I get higher it turns into a whistle note while we're just on the same stage of ah ah ah
I already know my voice classification... I am a proud Countertenor still love reading the comments on these type of videos cause other people discover their ranges 😁
This video is really informative. I've always been tenor for most of my life. But I've never understood why my range frequently slides. Some days I'm hitting a D2 and others my chest mix maxes out at D5.
Hey, thanks for the cool video and the first of many I will be watching. I was brought up in a cult where singing was constant and every night so my practice for the first 27 years of my life was (I'd say) more than most. I play the guitar by ear, the piano, saxophone etc but really struggle say in a karaoke setting with picking the right song for my range. For instance a favourite, The Gambler, Kenny Rogers - my first note sounds lower than he does although I can get through the entire song with no hiccups. I'm 40 now and would love to sing knowing I'm not making my friends ears bleed but picking my true range is proving difficult. Listening to your range classification, I think I'm at Baritone and struggle with the higher notes unless I go into a head voice that does not match the rest. I shall be checking out your bridging videos next, perhaps i'm doing something wrong with stepping up.
Thanks Neil. This might give you a good starting place. Watch this video and follow the directions: ua-cam.com/video/d0Ob8WGmvPc/v-deo.html
I'm G2-B4, a baritone. This helped a lot thank you.
My best friend is either Alto, or Mezzo - Soprano
Just found out im definitely a baritone!! Thank you for this! It was very educational ^^
Glad it was helpful!
Hey, great video. I appreciate your knowledge about music. I have a G2-A-flat, so i guess i am a high baritone. Cheers and good luck!
Glad this helped Alexandru Voicu and good luck to you!
Thanks for this, your videos are pretty helpful.
But I have a question, the mix voice counts as part of the vocal range? because I know I can go up to E5 or so just with mix, but pure chest just to G#4, and people say I'm a lyric tenor.
I did a short video hitting a C5 in mix voice, I really appreciate of you can see it, Thanks!
Very good!
Greetings Chuck,
Is this still an active comment section? I hope so. I want to revive my singing voice from many years of smoking and basically dropping my vocal type from soprano to more of a lower alto. In my younger years (I'm 53 now), I sang semi-professional in several Acapella Jazz choirs and for the NY State Chorraliers in competitions (even auditioned as a backup singer for Billy Joel in the 80s 😂). I had a life changing event and left singing (and acting) for about 30+ years and also became a heavy smoker. I have recently quit smoking and in only 3 months, have noticed I can hit some notes while singing in church that I haven't been able to touch in many years. One sister in our church even complemented me on my singing voice...I thought I sounded terrible! 😂 When I sing along with artists and sound pretty good with them, it's usually Fiona Apple, Manhattan Transfer, Carly Simon, Annie Lenox, and the like. I've even dabbled in opera and didn't do too bad (I actually really liked it). I just tonight found your information, UA-cam channel, and your website. I pray you're still active. I actually wrote a song (just the words) but have no melody, but one of the band members of our church writes and plays music and sings. He has offered to help me create a melody and song. He knows it's been many years since I sang anything solo and said he'll help however he can. Your videos sound a lot like what I did when I was younger. Not only was I in choirs, but I also took Music Theory as a class. I just need all the help I can get so my voice can be heard again. I hope you can help me. Thank you.
Hi IdahoFarmGirl, I'm just below you in Utah (if you are still in ID). I'm still around. My website is: www.powertosing.com/ There's lots of good stuff on my UA-cam channel and website. Glad to hear you are singing again!
The bottom note in bass is completely natural for me - as it gets towards the top few notes in that section, gets a lot harder. I'd struggle to go lower than that natural note though, without it feeling like I was rupturing my voice-box :)
How old are you Jonathan?
like i was the highest soprano in my choir and my highest note was c6 lmao
How?? 😂
SmileyFace GR idk i’m the only soprano in a family of mezzos and altos lol
I did a range test but it didn't have my results so then I came here looking for them and my exact range is C3-C6 and now I know I am just an alto even though my voice has a lot of developing to Do I now know thank you
You are welcome!
Seeing as I’ve been singing alto for forever this cleared some things up 😂 I can hit all the way down to the second F bellow middle C 😬
I'm relatively new to singing and dont have alot of practice so I was able to reach from a B2 to F#4 without falsetto because I cant use falsetto do you have any videos on falsetto

my voice likes low notes but even the first note of high notes are giving me a little bit struggle and when it goes higher it truly struggles me now, am i bass?.. its sad knowing the fact that bass is not welcomed in our todays music (pop).
my lowest comfortable range is g2.
while in the high notes i atleast consider c4 middle c as my comfortable high note.
ps. still replying to comments and guiding people! what a pure dedication !

Hi! I'm 13 years old and I am soon joining a choir. My range is G3 through D5, would I be classified as a soprano?
I did the test with the classification and my voice ended up where I pretty knew it would. Mixed. As an example, as an alto, on a karaoke CD Nella Fanatasia by ll Divo. I reached the G above high C. But when I did the test I wasn't at my best. I have asthma and my throat was scratchy. But at least I have an idea. I really enjoy your videos!!!
Thanks Amy! Good luck with your singing!
Hi chuck, I think sometimes voice classification does not required for all people because in my case ,I can sing very low and I can sing very high...
I don't think there is a lot of value to it. However, it is helpful when you are singing in choirs, or when auditioning for various solos or musical theater or even opera roles, it's helpful to understand where your voice functions best.
Your amazing
Actually My range is F2 to D5, When I started to learn to sing I only can sing from c3 to c4, after I discovered my head voice, my head voice starts from F4 to D5, I'm 17 years old so I think my voice will go changing, we don't have to focus on what type of voice we are, I think is better focus on our vocal range and learn how to use your whole voice, because all human voices are special to classify them into only a few groups. Thanks Chuck you're amazing I learnt to sing in head voices with your videos :D
Hi Enyer! I'm so glad you have found your head voice. You will get more and more comfortable with it as your voice matures. Congratulations on your progress!
4:13 “how did you do?”
Me : “fine”. (Meanwhile in my head 😫I’m pretty sure I still don’t know my vocal range and my neighbors will want to jump me in the morning it’s 12am and I’m trying to find me range )
Can you please tell me what this persons classification is:
Vocal Range: Eb2 ~ D6 (3 octaves, 5 notes and 1 semitone)
Supported Range: C3 ~ C4/C#4
And what does supported rate mean? Is this very good or unusual?
It all changes if they are pulling chest or breaking into falsetto. I just couldn't say for sure. Sorry I've never heard of supported rate.
Your a baritone that can squeeze high notes. And it's not unusual 🙂
You mention altos etc expanding towards soprano range potentially, but whst about reverse? Can a soprano train to sing alto notes? Also, as a teen I was a high soprano but stopped singing for almost a decade. Now I can hit alto notes I never could before but struggle with higher notes. Did my voice just likely change with age, or can I get those soprano notes back with practice?
It's not uncommon for adults to start losing their upper ranges they once had when younger and it is definitely possible to regain your high notes with the right exercises. You may want to start here with this video and follow the directions: ua-cam.com/video/d0Ob8WGmvPc/v-deo.html
This comment may be 2020, but this video is incredible!!!
Thanks!
Sooo, my range goes across a couple different classifications (C2-D6) I am still confused XD
Damn you're good!!! ;))
Hello. Just found your channel. Turns out I am soprano but I cannot reach the low F or A; the most I can do is Bb. I see your videos on hitting high notes but would you have any advice on how to sing low? When I try it is like scraping the bottom of the barrel.
How old are you?
So... 19 yr old male....My lowest note is D2 and it's pretty full, not at all airy or breathy. I had a friend who was in choir some time ago tell me I'd make a great bass.
I can belt with a full/chest sound up to a Bb4(I know I'm still technically mixing, but it still sounds chesty). That's where my total comfort stops and past that I can stretch a mix up to a C#5 and sometimes D5 when I'm feeling well rested and standing. None of that feels at all too hard... but it could still be incorrect.
My head voice can reach down to around G3 and can go up to an A5 and a Bb5 if I push, but it gets scratchy if I sustain it too long so I don't ever go up there. It's piercing and full I guess. As I get louder in HV it starts to get fuller, and at a soft volume it's piercing. I can't go past F#5 at a low volume. It's pretty well connected, I can transition easily in and out of it and can go from the bottom to the top with no break if I really concentrate.
As far as volume goes, I can get really soft... but I can also get overbearingly loud and booming. I don't know how to describe my tone too well and I don't want to say something wrong. I'd love to take the test and send in a recording... but I'm surrounded by people and I'd be a little embarrassed/self-conscience. So if you could give me a rough estimate of my voice type I'd really appreciate it. I commented this on another video by mistake, my bad.
Rough estimate: Classification: Baritone Vocal type: Pulled Chest-High Larynx
I have another question to is it normal for a bass .to sing in the tenor range. My friend Kevin says he’s a bass but after years singing queen and the Beatles he’s so used to singing in the tenor range that it feels comfortable for him is that normal?
It's more normal for tenors to think they are basses.
Thank you very much for this. Im afraid im bass. I absolutely want to reach higher notes.
Im still 19 by the way and I really want to learn a lot more to improve the gift I've been given.
Kent, I'm a bass and I've learned to sing as high as the C5 in a song on stage. Check this out: Watch this video and follow the directions. ua-cam.com/video/d0Ob8WGmvPc/v-deo.html
My range:
Prima Voce: Bb2-D4
Morning/Even Range: E2-Ab4
Afternoon Range: G2-Ab4
I have a bit of a darker timbre. What voice part am I?
Based on your range I'd say at this time you are a baritone.
@@PowerToSing thanks
In my choir I am a alto when I should be one of the boy ranges. (Baritone for me Im guessing, maybe bass, I did reach that first note.) But I do appreciate this video, I feel a little more known to my body.
I watched this video once and found that I was pretty comfortable with both alto and mezzo ranges, but had to strain a bit to get the soprano notes. Then I took some time to warm up my voice (simple scales with the piano) and was able to hit the F6 comfortably. In the past, I've noticed that as I warm up/sing for a bit, my voice wants to go higher. So, soprano?
Yes, Soprano. :)
I’m a soprano!
I always assumed that im a baritone because I couldn’t hit higher than a B below hi C in head voice. I think it’s because I’ve always brought Keys down so much that I’m used to singing lower. Is it possible to extend my head voice past hi C? I have a high speaking voice so is it possible I just didn’t know how to extend range and actually might be able to sing tenor?
100% Yes!
Can i ask a question? I have a D3-D6 range, my passagios are on D4 and D5 (i read somewhere that these are contralto passagios), however many people tell me my voice is high, light and soft and im confused 😶 when i sing people tell me my voice is clear and it's loud. With my range i can sing soprano songs to tenor songs but I want to know which songs fit my voice the best, thanks in advance.
Theres no way to answer that without hearing you sing the different songs and working with your voice for a while. Sorry!
Tenor well on my way to being an alto.
That was awesome lol
Hey, I am almost 22 years old. My vocal range goes from an octave or two below E2 like G0 to B4. Pretty much, I considered myself as bass-baritone/basso cantante rather than either an average baritone or a true profundo with a depth as the abyss.
That sounds about right Victor!
I have
Lowest: D2-E2
Low: C3-D3-E3-F3-G3-A3-B3
Middle: C4 (easy one😄)
Belt: F4-G4-A4
Falsetto: C5-G5-A5
High: C6-G6-A6
Highest: C7-C#7/G7-G#7
Vocal Type: ?
Vocal Range: Wide/ E2-G#7
My guess is bass or baritone
A couple of people told me I sound alto.
the comfiest lowest i can do G3
to D6
Mezzo soprano?
Linda Ronstadt jazz cover tunes feel good to sing
Yes based on your range that would be reasonable.
As you may remember i consider myself a countertenor. When warmed up i find my range, on pop songs, goes from C3 to A5. When I am singing classical I have gone as high as G6. Only happened once but typically I can go to C6.
Quite a range Chris!
Well it is nice but may not be practical in most situations. As I get older my tone is changing so singing high for me is almost unbearable. I don't know if it is the tinnitus messing with my "internal" tone. Others say I sound fine but what I hear in my head makes me cringe.
Damn! This guy can sing!
Chuck is the J K Simmons (whiplash -movie) who encourages singing without beating and demotivating.
Thanks Vignesh!
Thank you
You are welcome!
I can definitely hit the E2. Sometimes down to a D or Db with a little saxophone growl in there, so that probably doesn't officially count...but it is fun. I never sung before because I couldn't hit the notes until some guy asked me if I considered barbershop quartet because I had a good low voice. Now I still can't sing the higher notes in the scale, but I can do a mean Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star in a low voice.
You can also reach head voice tones which are very useful when you want to sing solos. You may find this helpful: Watch this video and follow the directions. ua-cam.com/video/d0Ob8WGmvPc/v-deo.html
I can do E2 comfortably as my lowest, which would put me as a bass. I however have problems going above A3, my voice starts doing weird things.
Since recently I'm in a choir and I have trouble singing the whole range of a song.
You may be a true basso, which means your first bridge begins on the A3. That's mine as well.
I don’t know why I’m seeing this if I’m sick, and will have to do it again when my condition get better
Did you?
Hello, i'm a male and I'm confused here, i've been singing for less than a year, still strugling becuase i'm self-taught, and now that i search for the "type of voice", obviously the higher tenor notes are no way only "chest voice", what i mean to say is that i can do the higher tenor note in "mixed voice", it doesn't sound as "opera style" as you sing it because i never practiced that type of sound but i thing i could do it with that sound if i practiced it, they sound more like Chris Cornell type of high notes, does that mean i'm a tenor or that i just expanded my range being "insert type of voice here"?, some answer would be appreciated, cheers.
How old are you? What is your lowest note you can sing?
@@PowerToSing 22, i think my lower note is D3 or C3 with a little concentration, without fry or anything, i guess i could go two o three notes lower with a really evident fry (do those notes count?), btw i never ever practice low notes.
@@FedeMayhemile. Given your age and lower range you are definitely a tenor. It's likely you are pulling your chest voice too high. You may find this video helpful:Watch this video and follow the directions: ua-cam.com/video/d0Ob8WGmvPc/v-deo.html
the last tune for tenor I could reach but it was really weak sounding, like really soften.. Also I'm singing from 3-4 months, I still havent developed my range and my singing voice in total.. But I can't sing low notes without gags.. the lowest I can sing is G3.. I most of my high notes are heady or nasal how you understand it.. My vocal teacher is trying to balance my voice and train my vocal cords to close firmly.. So what am I as in voice classification (I'm a guy) 20 year old.. Also while I talk I go to high pitch on moments(I think my voice is still mutating)
Walking With Stupid you are like countertenor right now
Sounds as though your voice just ain't broke yet.
awesome, you can sing in the range of all vocal types
Most trained singers can do that quite easily.
U r a legend♥♥
Also i think im a bass but i cant hit G4
Watch this video and follow the directions: ua-cam.com/video/d0Ob8WGmvPc/v-deo.html
Omg thanks I just knew now I could whistle (Maybe)
Is F7 whistle register?
I think anything 7 could be considered whistle, although I have heard a recording of a singer in head voice on C 7.
thank
Very interesting classification. My question about extending vocal range: I have done your test and recieved reply that I am PULLED CHEST HIGH LARYNX. Which one from your four classification is the best one if the possible expanding range is concerned? I mean difficulty, time and numbers of exercisses from your lessons. Thanks for sharing and thanks for reply in advance! :) It could be a possible subject of your new video too, Am I right?
To extend your range you need to learn how to bridge. Since your vocal type is Pulled Chest-High Larynx, watch these videos: www.powertosing.com/pulled-chest-high-larynx-2/ Next download the free exercises for Pulled Chest-High Larynx. Doing these exercises correctly will teach you to bridge which will increase your range. You eventually want to be a Mix vocal type.
Many thanks for an immediate reply and some adviseQ
I can Go down to A2 but u have problem opp over C4 i think i dont know how to do head voice, but last days i worked C3 to C4 to stay on tune and also remember The sound and when Im good on that i gonna go to C4-C5
When u were demonstrating the types like of tenors.... your G4 - E5 sounded like head voice or falsetto (idk the difference yet) was it really them or mixed voice... is mixed voice counted as vocal range (chest voice) ?
Watch these videos on falsetto. Start with episode 28. www.powertosing.com/knowledge-center/category/falsetto/ . Mix voice is not a vocal range.
+Power To Sing just want to know, that you demonstrated all types in chest, mix or head?
Demonstrated Chest from E2-D4 Started mixing around E4-F#4. Head Voice G-G#4. Head voice from G on up. So yes, my demonstrations were using my chest, mix around the bridge E4-F#4 and Head voice G4 and above.
In order to have my range, have i consider only chest voice, or also mix and head voice? Because in chest voice I go from g2 (especially early morning, in the evening I can't go lower than a2) to a4, if I am well warmed up also b4
Chest to head voice is what you should consider.
Range sounds like a baritone.
hey sir you look like the coach from whiplash...thanks for the video.
Hello! I'll start by saying that your videos are very interesting. I've found them not a lot time ago, and you inspired me to someday have singing classes, as soon as i end my course at uni.
Well, it happens that my speaking voice is not that powerful and it cracks many times, it's like puberty is still hitting me you know? Also, i'd like to be able to project my voice like some of my friends do.. sometimes they say i speak too low (they say) and they can't hear me... and i tend to be ignored cuz of that xD
I think i don't have a "fixed tone" voice, cuz it cracks many times, but in this video i think i'm basetone, even tho i can't reach the last note of basetone range...
What do you think i should do to increase my vocal range (not just basetone), if possible?
And, what concerns about the "puberty" voice i have, should i do some specific training or something?
Thank you!
Hi Derek: Watch this video and follow the directions. ua-cam.com/video/d0Ob8WGmvPc/v-deo.html
How old are you Derek Storm?
Power To Sing Im 22, from Portugal btw :D
There are various reasons for cracking. If the vocal cords are normal/healthy, when singing cracking is caused by the larynx moving upward. Go ahead and watch the video ua-cam.com/video/d0Ob8WGmvPc/v-deo.html and follow the directions. This will help you.
Power To Sing i'll check it, tks :)
I have a question. I download an app that tells you your range, i am a bass, and i can get to d2, is it possible? Or the app is wrong
No it's possible for sure!
The first example you used of the bass, I can sing lower than E2 but I can't sing as high as you went, but I can't sing as low as those who play bass in barbershop quartets. What would I be considered as?
If you can sing lower that the E2 I would say you are a bass.
@@PowerToSing But when I listen to bass guys from barbershop quartets they reach such low notes that I can't so am I really a bass?
@@Voldemorts.Nipple Yes. Just because someone can sing lower, doesn't mean you are not a bass.
@@PowerToSing ok than you very much!
hello sir, I can reach g2, but I can't reach g#. that's too high for me.
so what do you think? Am I Baritone or am I not suitable anywhere?
thank you.
The g2 is a very low note. Do you mean g4? If so, it's probably not available to you because you are pulling chest voice. If you can bridge with a mix voice, a blend of chest and head, you will be able to sing that note without staining. You may want to watch this video: Watch this and follow the directions. ua-cam.com/video/d0Ob8WGmvPc/v-deo.html
My voice is strange, my chest range starts to break at an F#4 and I can't really go above that. But my falsetto extends my range to a C#6 and sometimes a D6. Most likely because I'm an early teenage male, but I have no idea.
Yes you are now hitting the first bridge of your voice...which is E4, F, F#4. You pull chest voice up to the F#4 and then it breaks into falsetto. You can learn to get through the first bridge without breaking or pulling. Watch this video and follow the directions. ua-cam.com/video/d0Ob8WGmvPc/v-deo.html Be patient though. Your facing the hardest time of your singing life because your voice is still changing.
Hi I have a doubt: my lowest ever note is D2, my highest note is G#7 but i comfortably can sing between B2 and F5. What is my voice type?
I'd say your vocal classification is tenor.
I can sing from top of Alto to through the end of tenor into top baritone. I used to be able to sing higher but I lost my top range due to lack of use. I now crack and cut out in higher notes.

Mezzo-Sopranista (can do from Tenor to Soprano tho).
So im confused , does the vocal range given in the charts include the head voice as well , like my range is from a d#2 all the way to a g5 including my head voice , but my chest ends at a b 4 , what m I
I don't know. Your low note is definitely a bass note. Your high note is definitely a tenor not. Your chest should end at E4. How old are you?
@@PowerToSing im 15 , and yea , i dont know either, think its probably bcause i m not able to identify my mix
@@PowerToSing i also appreciate you replying to all the queries from everyone
@@anjorsingh11thc29 Thanks Anjor. Given your age, your voice will continue to change. It's likely you will see your upper range decrease.
From G2 to F6, I feel most comfortable in alto range, what type should i be considered as?
Your vocal range would be in the baritone or heldentenor area. Other factors include tessitura, tone or timbre. All of these things can change as you work on your voice to find it's optimal balance and working condition. So it's hard to nail down for sure.
Hi mr Gilmore, my range is C2-G4 but my comfortable notes are about F2-F3. My voice is quite deep and strong in low notes but not exceptionally deep like a basso profondo. Also my passaggios are about A3 and D4. Am I a bass? Maybe basso cantante or bass-baritone. Thanks
Your range definitely sounds like mine...and I'm a basso cantante. Other factors to consider is the weight or heft in your voice, the general pitch of your speaking voice and I think age can also be a factor...as my voice has deepened as I've gotten older. However, I've got a few more notes higher than you...but that may be a matter of training more than genetics.
@@PowerToSing In fact I've noticed the similarity in our speaking voice also, I talk with the same notes and the weight of my voice seems to be similar, maybe a little softer because I'm 19. Thanks for the video, sir!
@@centroculturalesalernum3668 You are welcome Francesco!
I'm from base to almost tenor without breaking. And from an alto to a metro soprano without breaking. How do I transition and go to a regular soprano
Are you a guy? How old?
so you count falsetto as a part of the vocal range? should we find out what our natural voice without falsetto?
Falsetto is disconnect tone. Head voice is connected tone...often on the same or similar notes. Both vibrate in the head. But I don't recommend falsetto nor consider it part of the singers vocal range. Instead, I teach and recommend head voice instead of falsetto.
Thank you.... Just would like to know why you wouldn’t recommend falsetto?
Also what could I do for post nasal drip and allergies that cause my throat to be red and irritated most of the time
@@BobbyWashingtonvlog Hi Bobby: Regarding allergies there's no easy answer. My best advice is find a good ENT doctor who also works with singers and follow her/his best treatment plan. If you know how to get into head voice there is no need for falsetto. Head voice contains more overtones, uses all the cord structure and keeps the voice healthier all your life.
Power To Sing thank you so much. I really appreciate your help.
So here is my current range:
Lowest chest note:G2
Highest Chest note:B4/C5
Highest Falsetto:F5
Highest Head Voice:A5
Highest Whistle Note:G7
I think I am a baritone (formerly a tenor probably due to puberty) and my vocal type is pulled chest/high larynx (That's what you said during a recorded message but it said flip/falsetto on a written message)
Anyway,Thank you Chuck Gilmore
Hi UN: I agree your range is Baritone. Flip Falsetto is more often than not caused by pulling chest with a high larynx. Good luck to you!
Power To Sing Thank you very much Chuck Gilmore for your guidance.I will hopefully improve my voice with your help.Have a nice day😊
you said that everyone should be able to sing all of the notes in his vocal classification withoud straining or such. and even though the low notes of bass are indeed no problem, the highest one is close to straining for me. what does this mean for me?
Genetically we all reach some kind of limit. The question is, is it the true top or is the larynx rising and causing the problem. It the larynx is coming up, you will feel strain before you reach your true maximum limit.
my lowest note is D#2 and A4 with chest voice. With my falsetto I can go upto G5.What is my Vocal type?
To get your vocal type go here and take the PowerTest: www.powertosing.com/ Your range sounds sounds like the range of a Bass. Baritones generally can't sing that low.
Hello sir. I have been having issues with my voice, and i dont know what could be happening. Im a baritone, my lowest is F2 and my highest chest voice is D4, i domt know why but i have been working on my range for a long time but it has never went over D4, it seems stuck, i practice with piano about 20 minutes a day, just going up and down the scale, but when i go to E4 my voice changes to head voice. What could i do?
Watch this video and follow the directions. ua-cam.com/video/d0Ob8WGmvPc/v-deo.html You have the same issue as I had. You can definitely get beyond D4.
Power To Sing thank you so much! I will definitely check all your videos amd subscribe
what is my voice type?my range is roughly around f2-a#5..u can watch my cover videos and tell me what am i?coz someone told me that im a baritone, while the other guy told me im a tenor...tqq
I'd say closer to a tenor. I also recommend you do so pitch work. Some of the pitches you were singing were slightly under where you want them. There are a bunch of online helps if you search ear training.
Hi! My full vocal range is: G2-G5. What am I? People have told me I am a tenor, because I sound so light, pitchy and sweet. Then I looked for my fach (tessitura) and found out I have always been a baritone. But every time after I warmed up, I struggle with low notes below Db3. Recently I became 21 years old. What type of baritone am I? I can sing Bb2 to Ab4 with chest and head voice. Greetings from Latin America.
You sound like a tenor to me.
Power To Sing Thanks!
Thanks for your video!! I'm 22 and just took classes for eight months. When I went to class, my teacher and I found that my range is now A2-A5. My teacher got confused because my range changed quite a lot and we thought I'm a mezzo...so do you have any idea of which category I might fall into?
Regarding your vocal range: A male would be classified as a tenor, likely a countertenor. A female with this range would likely be a contralto.
Thanks for your reply!! I'm a female by the way :) I try to search but didnt find lots of songs for contralto, so does that mean I should probably practice as a mezzo?
What genre of music do you like to sing?
Power To Sing usually musical theater, but I start to sing some classical works recently, and will probably focus on opera if possible.
There are contralto works in classical, opera and musical theater. You will have to search for them. With a low range like you have, it's a real plus if you can find songs that show it off. Musical numbers you might like are Poor Unfortunate Child (Ursula- Little Mermaid) A pop song you may enjoy is Toni Braxton's Unbreak My Heart.
The lowest note I can hit is A3 but the highest note I can hit is A5 I was put as a soprano is that correct
Yes in terms of your lower notes, but you should be able to sing higher than A5. Watch this video and follow the directions. ua-cam.com/video/d0Ob8WGmvPc/v-deo.html
My lowest note is an E2 and my highest note is an F4. Does that make me a bass? I like to sing but I never really know where to place myself!
I would say yes....bass or maybe baritone....depending on what you can do when you learn how to bridge through the E,F,F#4
Power To Sing The only thing is I can hit the higher notes but it is extremely uncomfortable for me to sing there. I am much more comfortable at the lower levels even though I can't go super low. I guess I just need to do some more practice! Thanks for the quick response!
I'm a male and 17 years. I can go as low as an e2 and as high as D5 with chest voice. But I sing MUX within e5-A5 and up to F6 in head voice and I feel I can go higher. Please what is my likely vocal classification
Mix*mux
Frankly it's too early to tell. At age 17, Your voice is still changing. Currently right now, I'm going to guess Baritone.
I need help...
I can go as low as E2 and high as Alto...
Am I Alto then?I never tried my full potential as I have always been scared of my neighbours, will update soon....hope I'm a sopprano
Sounds like you are alto.....but not sure how high you mean when you say as high as "Alto"
Is it normal for untrained basses to feel abit uncomfortable singing at the lower notes?
Like i go from D2-E4.. but D2 to E2 a little bit uncomfortable? I feel like my adam's apples sinking.. Also, there's this rumbling feeling at the whole second octave, but thats just my whole neck resonating
So im pretty confused haha.. Any idea?
I think it's pretty normal as long as you are not forcing your Adams apple downward. The rumble is natural vibration.
Im most probably a bass right?
Yes!
It seems normal. I'm untrained singer, I used to sing before voice change. I got classified as bass in choir and my range is D2-G4(mix to C5 I belive), I was told I have quite a big range for a bass(cause I'm untrained). I also feel my neck vibrate more than chest somewhere in D#2 and D2, sometimes also E2. Time of the day really is the key here. More chest resonance during evenings and mornings.
Hmm mix to C5 does it mean your falsetto is even higher? (probably a dumb qn but it goes to show how little i know).
I guess thats a pretty big range..
What if someone is a tenor that is able to hit F2 I’m definitely not a baritone I easily can sing songs in the tenor range so would I be a tenor with the lows of a baritone/bass Highest note in chest E5
I would describe you as a tenor with some bass notes!
So I’m a baritone for my comfortable notes but I can hit the notes of a tenor so I think I get become a tender eventually
Yes...sounds like that is true.
I can sing E2 to G5 I have vocal breaks at Bb3-E4 and I can sing full tone to Ab4 I'm Baritone?
That would be my guess based on your range...unless you are singing to the G5 in falsetto.
I’m a male c3 lowest, g5 highest and can hit c7 falsetto. Am I considered counter tenor?
Not necessarily. But you are a tenor for sure.
I can go from B1 to F4- and F#4 sometimes.... what should I do to extend my range?
