I lost my baby due to this. 42 weeks pregnancy. This happened due to late delivery process and medical negligence. Her oxygen level was 80 and below I wished I saw this video earlier. It's sad.

Wow! Thanks for your kind words Susan! We put out a couple of basic videos on ventilation, and then we've been getting a lot of requests on gases- so we'll go with that next. Fascinating! Thank you! I was born early because of MAS, apparently my amniotic fluid was absolutely filthy. I am currently 34 weeks pregnant and was wondering if there was any chance this might be genetic. I'd like to know if my baby has a higher risk of developing MAS, also... it's currently a breech baby and doesn't want to turn. Is there any relationship between breech babies and higher MAS incidents (maybe because of the stress associated with being breech)?
Hi Laure! Congratulations on your pregnancy! If anything I would say known breech babies are LESS likely to have MAS. Generally they are delivered by repeat C-section, and so they don't go through any stress of labour AND they're generally delivered closer to 39 weeks rather than ~42 weeks, say (also lowers chance of MAS). Good luck with delivery- we hope it all goes smoothly. (As an aside- my mother always tells me I was delivered through filthy amniotic fluid too!)
Hi! My babies (had 3) all were not head down at 34w so don’t worry- there is still some time for them to turn. Also, my 2nd baby still was butt down at 38w4d so we thought for sure c-section. Nah- went into labor at 38w6d and he was head down when I was triaged and ready to come! ;) My first was actually “sunny side up” ie facing my stomach rather than my butt like it should. They had to manually reach inside me and rotate him TWICE! He did have MAS and I really think the stress of al the turning added to the risk of that Happening. Also I was born with MAS, I was fullterm/10 days past due. Only my 1st baby had MAS. The other 2 didn’t 😀 Lmk if you want anymore info!! Good luck!!!!

Hello Kgotso- that really depends on how bad the MAS disease is. If they end up on ECMO they can be in hospital for over a month. Generally though, if you can break the PPHN cycle, and allow the lungs to heal, babies can be ready to go home in 2- 3 weeks. Generally their lungs heal well, and they don't end up being crippled by their pulmonary disease. (Ie can run, and play and exert energy similar to other children).
So happy you're watching from Nepal! The complications of infants with MAS depend on two major factors: 1) How bad the stress was on the baby to cause the infant to pass and then aspirate meconium (i.e. did the baby suffer any significant HIE) and 2) What the respiratory outcomes were like. Did the baby need ECMO? or Oxygen for a long period of time. If so, they may have symptoms of chronic lung disease (e.g. bronchoconstriction, less stamina etc.) Generally though, if an infant is going home on room air, eating feeds easily, then there shouldn't be any significant long term issues. My grand daughter was born today at 40.2 weeks gestation via induction. Before even the pit was started the heart rate spiked to 250 and she had meconium staining. Transferred to larger facility - they tried Adenosine with not much success. Now she's on esmolol and heart rate is 150 - 170. They tried taking oxygen cannula off once and her sats dropped. We don't know if its a gestational heart abnormality, or complications of meconium. Do you have any thoughts as to what it is? Nirmal weight and no other signs of any anomalies.
It would really depend on how complicated the course were. If the infant had severe MAS and ended up on ECMO, then yes, that may affect development, otherwise we wouldn't expect it to.
I'm sorry just seeing this now- we can get in a lot of trouble if we give medical advice on specific patients who aren't ours! We have an email on the home page though. We wish your little one health and strength.
Congratulations on your baby! We can't really speak to your baby's course given that we don't know any of the details. Some babies do cry less though! If she is growing well, breathing easily, and eating well, then these are all encouraging signs. Follow with your pediatrician if you have concerns.

Congratulations on your son! Many many babies don't cry for some time after birth. Obviously we don't know anything about your baby, but speak with your team for the answers you're looking for. We wish you luck and your baby's health.

That’s a tough one! If there are BP issues I’d go with hydrocortisone. If I’m trying to get baby extubated- I’d go Dexamethasone. And if the kid is now 2-3 weeks old and we can’t get off oxygen, it probably go prelone. Not sure if anyone knows- and also hard to prove it helps!
Hello Rabina-we are so sorry you are going through this. Sometimes there is some irritation in the lungs that takes time to heal. It's very hard to make any sort of assessment without being involved in your baby's care, but we do hope your baby gets better soon.
My baby was born one week back.... Still she is in NICU..... With out oxygen pipe her oxygen level is 88-92..... In how many days she will completely recover........? Please reply mam.... 😭😭
Hello Lavanya- we're so sorry you're going through this. It sounds like she's getting very good care. It is always difficult to predict how long babies will need Oxygen for. She sounds like she's nearly there though! Good luck
Hello Ma'am brother's baby is having a Meconium Aspiration Syndrome because of the delay in c section and his lungs and stomach has been cleared but we have been told that baby is having some infection I don't exactly remember some (utreo blood infection or something of the sort) its been 32-33 hrs but his condition is not getting better and thankfully its also not getting worse. Ma'am what do you think about him (the baby) Where does the condition of the baby stands He is also intubated.
hello- we are sorry you are going through this. It is very difficult to say anything about the status of your nephew without more information. We will say that this is a common scenario- where it can take several days (sometimes weeks) for babies to improve. It is always encouraging when an infant is not getting worse. Good luck
My baby born on 16sep2021 39weeks Full term, admitted in hospital for passing motion and swallowing it and it's been 8days on oxygen and doctor is saying that wbc count is fine all blood reports are fine but she's is affected with pneumonia and jaundice recently they tried removing oxygen and observed that she can stay without oxygen for 3to4 hrs later she's again having rapid breathing problem, she's digesting my milk with no vomitings and now they are saying that she's has something stuck in throat and what not ..... please answer is this normal or anything serious and when will she be back to me... I'm so mentally and emotionally stressed about her, please answer my question Very eagerly waiting for your response from Hyderabad India
Oh Pranaya, we're so sorry you're going through such a tough time. Obviously we do not know the details of your baby's condition, but her course sounds very typical- it can take some time for the breathing to improve. It sounds like her team is taking good care of her. We wish you luck and peace.

my wife supposed to deliver baby on 23 of january, she was 3 days late and Dr. decided to do caesarean surgical and taken baby out on 26 january, then they realized baby swallowed Meconium until his lungs. his birth weight is 1.700 KG. 40 weeks and 3 days was in mothers womb. still my baby in the hospital baby room 🥲🥲🥲🥲🥲
Both me and my first baby were born with this!! I was fine, but my son required strong antibiotics, cpap for a day, and then he became jaundiced and they kept us 5 days until he started eating/pooping. As a first time mother, I was soooo worried/sad/crazy emotional. And I know I was so lucky he’s fine and we had a short stay but still so traumatized from that! He was full term btw lol (as was I)
Congratulations on the birth if your son, Wanda. We are so happy he is better. That is crazy you both had MAS! It is so incredibly stressful seeing your little baby hooked up to machines and pumps, (and feeling relatively helpless) and it takes mothers a very long time to deal with those emotions. Many mothers do have some PTSD from their NICU stay. Make sure you give yourself that time and grace. We hope it's smoother sailing from now on :)

2) What the respiratory outcomes were like. Did the baby need ECMO? or Oxygen for a long period of time. If so, they may have symptoms of chronic lung disease (e.g. bronchoconstriction, less stamina etc.)
Generally though, if an infant is going home on room air, eating feeds easily, then there shouldn't be any significant long term issues.

My grand daughter was born today at 40.2 weeks gestation via induction. Before even the pit was started the heart rate spiked to 250 and she had meconium staining. Transferred to larger facility - they tried Adenosine with not much success. Now she's on esmolol and heart rate is 150 - 170. They tried taking oxygen cannula off once and her sats dropped. We don't know if its a gestational heart abnormality, or complications of meconium. Do you have any thoughts as to what it is? Nirmal weight and no other signs of any anomalies.

It would really depend on how complicated the course were. If the infant had severe MAS and ended up on ECMO, then yes, that may affect development, otherwise we wouldn't expect it to.

Congratulations on your baby! We can't really speak to your baby's course given that we don't know any of the details. Some babies do cry less though! If she is growing well, breathing easily, and eating well, then these are all encouraging signs. Follow with your pediatrician if you have concerns.

Which steroids you prefer
That’s a tough one! If there are BP issues I’d go with hydrocortisone. If I’m trying to get baby extubated- I’d go Dexamethasone. And if the kid is now 2-3 weeks old and we can’t get off oxygen, it probably go prelone. Not sure if anyone knows- and also hard to prove it helps!

Hello Rabina-we are so sorry you are going through this. Sometimes there is some irritation in the lungs that takes time to heal. It's very hard to make any sort of assessment without being involved in your baby's care, but we do hope your baby gets better soon.

Ma'am brother's baby is having a Meconium Aspiration Syndrome because of the delay in c section and his lungs and stomach has been cleared but we have been told that baby is having some infection I don't exactly remember some (utreo blood infection or something of the sort) its been 32-33 hrs but his condition is not getting better and thankfully its also not getting worse.

hello- we are sorry you are going through this. It is very difficult to say anything about the status of your nephew without more information. We will say that this is a common scenario- where it can take several days (sometimes weeks) for babies to improve. It is always encouraging when an infant is not getting worse. Good luck

My baby born on 16sep2021 39weeks Full term, admitted in hospital for passing motion and swallowing it and it's been 8days on oxygen and doctor is saying that wbc count is fine all blood reports are fine but she's is affected with pneumonia and jaundice recently they tried removing oxygen and observed that she can stay without oxygen for 3to4 hrs later she's again having rapid breathing problem, she's digesting my milk with no vomitings and now they are saying that she's has something stuck in throat and what not ..... please answer is this normal or anything serious and when will she be back to me...

my wife supposed to deliver baby on 23 of january, she was 3 days late and Dr. decided to do caesarean surgical and taken baby out on 26 january, then they realized baby swallowed Meconium until his lungs. his birth weight is 1.700 KG. 40 weeks and 3 days was in mothers womb. still my baby in the hospital baby room 🥲🥲🥲🥲🥲

Both me and my first baby were born with this!! I was fine, but my son required strong antibiotics, cpap for a day, and then he became jaundiced and they kept us 5 days until he started eating/pooping. As a first time mother, I was soooo worried/sad/crazy emotional. And I know I was so lucky he’s fine and we had a short stay but still so traumatized from that!
He was full term btw lol (as was I)
Congratulations on the birth if your son, Wanda. We are so happy he is better. That is crazy you both had MAS! It is so incredibly stressful seeing your little baby hooked up to machines and pumps, (and feeling relatively helpless) and it takes mothers a very long time to deal with those emotions. Many mothers do have some PTSD from their NICU stay. Make sure you give yourself that time and grace. We hope it's smoother sailing from now on :)
