  • When we add a new speaker to a vehicle we often times will need a speaker adapter in order to adapt the interface between the new speaker and the vehicles mounting pattern. What if we could 3D print our own speaker adapters? Now we can! Here's how!

    I know I am a bit late on commenting on this video but I just got the chance to watch it and read through the comments. I can't honestly remember when I first started watching Mark's CAF videos but it's been a few years to say the least. I think all the people making negative comments about the 3D printer are kind of missing the point. Mark didn't start out with high tech, high cost tools and he has made MANY videos over the years to show how you can do these jobs without the fancy equipment. I don't think he is suggesting that everyone go out and buy a $1500 3D printer just to make a speaker adapter. The fact is he does this as a business and as such he has been able to, over the years, buy some really nice equipment and has taken the time to make these videos to share with us not only the practical way to do these things for the average DIYer but also some of the cool new technologies, materials and processes that are available to even mid level enthusiasts or those maybe trying to start a business of their own. Quite frankly considering what you can do with a 3D printer $1500 is not bad at all if that's what you're into, just look at how much people spend on gaming systems and controllers and it's not like most people are making money off those. I think he was just trying to share with all of us how this could be made with a 3D printer and give those of us that have never used a 3D printer a walk through even if for no other reason than it's awesome. I believe there's alot of us out there like myself that thinks it's neat and like seeing how it's done, just like there's alot of us that like to watch shows like "How it's made". He has shown in other videos how to make speaker adapters with simple tools and materials like MDF or fiberglass, this was just a cool way to show us what he is making right now with the tools he has. Okay that's my 2 cents, fire away with the replys.

    I don't know if you would see this comment or not. I was wondering if a person could print an entire speaker pod that would snap I to a factory location. Like a pod that will snap into where the speaker covers the dash of the 4th gen ram 1500s.
    As in remove the covers and design and print a replacement cover to install a mid and tweeter in the same position

    This is a terrific video! I have two questions. One, what was the total time it took for the 3D printer to make the part? Two, wouldn't it be a good idea to fill those (what appear to be) opening around the mounted speaker that prevent the front of the speaker from being isolated from the back. I would think the shared air between the front and back of the speaker would have an impact on performance and sound quality? Anyway, very cool video!

    So in your set up, are you going for a two seat listening position, or are you using the center channel to handle your voice commands, bluetooth, factory chimes?

    • @maybe2243
      @maybe2243 6 років тому

      Jack Oswald this is the optional factory sound system in 04-08 Grand Prix. The center speaker ads a small amount of mid range

    • @joswald2001
      @joswald2001 6 років тому

      Yes, I'm asking if there is a goal of adding a center channel, usually people don't use it unless they're going for a 2 seat sound stage for judging since timing can be an issue between all three speakers up front, unless using an Alpine PXA-H800 or JBL MS8 that use Logic or Dolby surround for processing. As with my system, I used it as a way to retain factory chimes, as well as bluetooth phone, and not have them amplified in my entire system.

    • @maybe2243
      @maybe2243 6 років тому

      Jack Oswald Yea normally I wouldn't use the center speaker. I believe he's just replacing the factory speakers and using factory amp.

  • @mndlessdrwer

    Now you just need a 3D printer with enough bed space to print 6.5" speaker baffles with. Some sweet angled baffles to really fix some of the stock door mounting positions would be really cool.

  • @whatluck1508

    I know this video is 5 years old, but on that very same vehicle, for the rear deck did you swap out the speakers for any kind of component speakers and reused the factory bracket, if so did you make a bracket for the tweeter that sits ontop of the woofer?
    Also did you happen to make a new grill for the center dash speaker location?
    I'm looking at replacing my rear deck speakers for aftermarket component speakers and looking at 3d printing that bracket

    great video. this 3d printer would be great to make maybe 3 to 4 pairs of speaker adapters ahead of time to have in stock in the install bay. How much would be the cost per speaker adapter in materials?

    • @monstrositygarage
      @monstrositygarage 6 років тому

      3d printer filament is pretty cheap. It's about $30 for a 1kg roll. plus the cost of the insert nuts granted you already have a 3d printer.

    • @RoBo3DPrinter1
      @RoBo3DPrinter1 6 років тому

      The adapter would be about $1 in material cost

I wasn't going to point it out but the proper names for tools is a very important part of any type of automotive work! I can't stress it enough when I'm working with any sidekicks or new car guys because if you called a parts house and asked for calipers to rent let's say, u would be given the incorrect tool for the job. I'm sure mark just mis spoke when he said that. But cool video regardless! 3d printing is some cool sh!t I'd love to have one of those machines

    • @CarAudioFabrication
      @CarAudioFabrication  6 років тому +4

      I disagree, from a business stand point it makes a ton of sense, you could have a design for an adapter and whenever you schedule an appointment with a client you could start it printing and have it ready for the install. Much faster than waiting for freight, then for applications where an adapter doesn't exist you can make your own offering your clientele something that the competition can't.
