Cobra Kai breathed new life into the Karate Kid franchise, but the show was facing bleak fate after UA-cam shifted their distribution strategy in a different direction. Jacob Kleinman caught up with show's OG stars Ralph Macchio and William Zabka, who shared how the series found a new home and a massive audience with Netflix.

Why wasn’t this show on Netflix from day 1

Because Netflix declined the potential of this show at the first season streaming service distribution shopping. So it landed on UA-cam Originals when they're started getting seriousn with high quality original content business.
But since the Originals on UA-cam didn't took off, because they're a dumbass promoting this show although at some point Cobra Kai on UA-cam is a somewhat successful, it's not enough to keep the business on Originals on UA-cam sustainable to they decided to back out of original programming and failed to rack up any major award recognition from Holywood, they just focus on BS Kpopies UA-cam Music documentaries and funding high quality Originals for their own creator ecosystem themselves (e.g. Markiplier, MKBHD's UA-cam Original series) UA-cam Originals still exists but it now focuses on UA-camrs Original contents instead.
So they've told Cobra Kai creators there at Sony Television, they gotta wrap up the show now but the creators have plans for more so they've given them an option to shop for other streaming service to distribute and market this show globally, and at some point it almost landed on HBO Max but Netflix got it. And with all it's brand recognition, amazing marketing strats and accessibility supports (dubbing, subtitles) it's been super successful and more popular than all its time on UA-cam.
*It's potential is finally realized.* Seriously it could be Netflix next big thing since Stranger Things

I don't know but I'm glad that it managed to find a home in UA-cam orginals otherwise we may have never gotten this show like this. UA-cam Originals allowed it to gain attention and popularity which convinced Netflix to pick it up
