Great advice for an iconic scene. On my one and only dawn visit there I lucked out when one of the 50 tripod holders, no exaggeration, left his location pre-sunup, I immediately assumed his former position. After about 85 exposures, I was able to get some great sun stars as the sun rose over the La Sal mountains. In the end I'm sure that I was ill prepared for the absolute zoo of people that morning and the challenges of that photo event, and I'm not sure I will be able to attempt it again in the foreseeable future, but what a fantastic photo morning! Excellent tutorial and a great tip for bracketing 2 frames with one shot -3 for the HDR image. That's probably saved me a bunch of time of not messing with 5 images as I've done in the past. Also, I'm relatively new to mirrorless and very proficient with my D500 AF - so your explanation of how you use autofocus with my Z 6II was great. Now, I have to learn to trust it. lol. My first task with the Z 6ii was to photograph a friends family and I used single point/single servo - I just didn't have enough confidence in Auto Area AF with face/eye detect. I'll get there. You're a great teacher and really appreciate your time and talent. Stay safe!

If ON1 has improved 2021 I may buy it. I really like the program, but I had a lot of problems with the early trial version. I'll have to research this.

Playing with bot the Z5 and RP I just can’t help but notice Nikon just is just more feature rich. I’m looking to do subjects and landscapes so I need that all in one camera. I’m now thinking the Z6ii is the way to go. Also big thanks on the showing the HDR Lightroom and effects. I always wondered how photographers do that beautiful landscape and not have the sky wash everything out. I subscribed and looking forward to following more of your videos
I have been taking bracketed pictures like this on my Fuji Xt2. It makes life easier when shot handheld. Technically, in Fuji, it just enables the continuous shooting mode behind the scene with different exposure. It's pretty nice feature to utilize. I even tried the continuous L on my D750 while bracketing turned on. It was not as accurate as Fuji but not bad either.
Wonderful video! I’m just becoming familiar with your videos. You do a very nice, low key presentation. As I mentioned in a previous comment, I hope to get the z 6ii in February. I expect your videos will play a big role in my underhand learning the camera.
Very much liked this and the dedicated bkt menu is a great help . Can you not simply continue your post processing within Lr instead of ON1 Photo RAW? Lr has what seems to be the same sliders / brushes etc❓ Never the less; what a stunning capture ✅
In the finish editing stage, on1 effects filters with photoshop like layers, masking and blending combined with easy to create and adjust presets adds precision and saves me hours of time

I recently sold my D850 + All F mount lenses and now have the Z7 II & 24-200 and 14-30 which suits me (mainly landscape) from my remote walks in the Scottish Highlands. I emulated your set up which fits into my workflow fine for my Z7 II. I’m an Adobe user (just getting into Ps after 5 yrs of Lr ). I’ve tried Affinity Photo, Luminar etc but over time I learned more of Lr. I did really like your image which is astoundingly. Thank you for your quick reply. I’ll have a bit more look at OM1 raw….
James photoshop is fabulous for the same reasons. If your digging into that, stick with it. :) I'll be dying more photoshop training in the months ahead. ;)

I never use in camera HDR or timelapse. Those are processes I want lots of control over. The camera tosses 90% of the original data and you have no latitude to adjust in post. It won't be long till we can edit the new NEF files. Just archive em and wait a few days or a week more. ;)
Hi Hudson. Great videos! can you do a video better explaining the auto tracking and the AF-ON button? I got a bit lost there. I do try use auto tracking mode but all photos get auto of focus. when shooting birds. Probably using the wring setting or the glass is not the best to track birds, using the kit lense 24-70. thanks

Can you recall that saved focus point? I’m talking about D5/D6 style where you can save and recall a focus point. Shoot something between and then activate the saved focus point with a click of a button
I almost never switch out of Matrix. I check with the histogram, but the camera's are so smart these days. They rarely need help. If I do switch out, it's always spot. The one shaft of light hitting a table shot.
Thans Hudson - great to see your workflow. Do you tend to use Matrix Metering for the whole scene, or Highlight-Weigted Metering? I've found HWM to be really effective for general shooting, without the need for HDR in many cases thanks to the extraordinary dynamic range of my D810 (now looking old!)
Hey Hudson I have been using HDR for a number of years and have been using focus stacking as well. How would you combine both to create a final photo. I've been experimenting however it's just not producing an acceptable photo.
So... with the saved focus position setting turned OFF and you turn the camera off and then back on I understand the cameras reset to focus on infinity....which would be a good trick for astrophotography?
The camera's idea of infinity is never quite accurate. The saved focus point is accurate. You're far better off finding infinity with precision and turning the body off with save AF turned on. The other method is not really usable in my experience. Trust me. I tried.

I've got to be honest. That looks like it would be OK for phone photography selfies. I can't imagine using a lighter weight or less solid setup than the lightweight rig (just under 4lbs) that I link in my gear links. You are right about the selfies aspect...it's meant for selfies but this product is I think meant for the video blogger with a mirrorless system...it's .. way...overkill for a phone and that is an understatement if you've handled this tripod...it's ridiculously solid and well built. More of a upgrade to the popular Jobi flexible tripod than a substitute for a legit full on tripod. That said your point is valid it's also not a proper tripod for a camera in your definition and experience....I wouldn't choose this to take up Denali for crying out loud...fortunate dog you! I will be keeping this tool... but also include in my kit a proper lightweight tripod that you would be ok with including in your kit....and I'll be using your links for lots of stuff :) I have to say though this is high grade quality stuff from PolarPro...the Variable ND filters Peter McKinnon Edition II I got ooze quality...the storage case design alone... on these filters.... my goodness so well thought out. I also have some ND/CP Filters from PolarPro that are top notch stuff. I came across them via the GoPro crowd and cameras and impressed with their product. Keep in mind I bought my Z6ii more for video purposes but will also use it for fine photography....I would love to see your favorite saved settings for a few VIDEO scenarios on the z6ii!!
How has your experience with ON1 2021 been? I had a lot of problems. Thumbnails would turn black or green sometimes, huge rectangular hunks of the subject would e chopped out when refining the edges of a composite, and the subject in a comp. often had artifacts. I used ON 2018-20, and tested 2021, and problems just got worse. I hate that because I really like how ON works and a lot of its filters, etc. But when I couldn't finish a comp. without moving it to Photoshop, there was no reason to keep ON1. That said, Windows downloads a lot of junk files that mess up Lightroom and Photoshop. When I have problems, I shut down everything, do a file clean up in Bitdefender, restart, and the problems gone. It could be something like that with ON1. I guarantee you that my next computer will be a Mac. Comments?
I've had very few issues with 2021. Even the beta. It's Graphics card and RAM hungry though. best to put the scratch files and cache on a fast seperate hard drive too. I wish focus stacking and panos had some updates, but Effects is incredible. I just adore effects and the way you can layer and blend and build presets in it. I'd have a hard time giving that up. I tend to organize and process in LR and finish edit in ON1 on a PSD. Funny, I'm so fed up with Mac. I bought a screaming desktop PC when they announced the Mac Pro at $6k for the entry level spec. A much nicer built out PC was only 3500. Sure, I was worried I'd hate Windows 10 having run from Vista years ago, but I found I adore both the desktop and the OS. My Macbook Pro became more and more the machine I didn't enjoy working on. My touch-bar 2018 MacBook Pro 15" was getting long in the tooth and I got tired of waiting for a true breakthrough product from Apple. I just bought a maxed out Dell XPS-15 and it's the finest laptop I've yet touched. I adore it. I'm pretty much done with Mac for now. The value and performance just aren't there. I think they've abandoned professional creators with the direction they've taken. Trendy, bespoke machines priced and marketed to the international jet set. Lovely looking, but lower tech than the competition and more and more iOS like than the OSX of old. That's my opinion. I love my wife's new Macbook Air M1 for web browsing and email traveling. For everything else give me this quiet, powerful touchscreen, 100 percent Adobe RGB XPS-15 with 64GB of RAM and Core i9 10th gen and NVIDIA 2030. It's a marvel. Not a hiccup with Lightroom CC, PS, ON1 or Premiere. Really an astonishing jewel of a machine.

My HP 11" laptop works great, though I replaced the old hard drive with a 2 Tb SSD. I agree with ON1 focus stacking and HDR needing work. I do wish that Capture One could do composites.
When you hit the merge button in Lightroom, the frame auto stacked on top of the two original images. How did you set this up? I always have to search for the merge image. Sometimes it shows up at the end of the film strip!
Interesting video! I use 3 brackets with my Z6 +2,0 and -2. I will try your 2 bracket method of 0 and -3 as I think 2 photos are usually sufficient. Do you make sure with your 0 exposure that you can clearly see into the shadow areas or are you just worried about blown highlights when shooting into the sun or bright sky? Out of interest, you can have done the whole process in ON1 2021 so how does LR HDR compare to ON1 2021?
ON1's HDR has some great fine tuning options to control ghosting. I find that LR rarely has edge issues even with handheld capture. My most common process is to RAW process in LR (HDR is part of that). The reasons are twofold. 1) I have 23 years of photography in my LR catalog and a long history organizing in it since version one. 2) the LR sharpening, noise reduction, and panorama methods. I do run nearly every serious image I work on through ON1 Effects for finish editing though and I frequently use Layers for easy compositing and Resize for uprezzing.
Hey Hudson, I set up my Z6II and saved my settings to an old sd card. Question is, if I also set up my U1-U3 to different settings and save to the sd card, does save the main settings and the separate user settings? So if I have to reload settings from the sd card, are all user modes reloaded? Thanks, Frank
I have 23 years of files in my Lightroom catalog and I carry that catalog on the road with me. I've been a LR user since version 1 so far as organizing and raw processing goes. I love to finish edit and do work in Layers and Resize in ON1. Love the company, love the product and I recommend them as a more intuitive stand alone, but I'm very invested in LR for my digital asset management and some of the RAW processing features and panorama power.
LR/PS has stronger asset management, noise reduction, panorama merging, focus stacking, amd printing capabilities. Plus the ability to work with one catalog on multiple machines with previews of all my offline files is very key to me when I travel teaching workshops on my laptop. I love to finish edit and do local adjustments and use resize in PR. I love the way presets work in PR and I think it's easier software to learn with less room for messing up your files. It depends how much organizing and RAW processing power one needs.
It depends. If your main rig is the Z7 and you shoot action, yes. The big buffer, faster processing and quicker AF response and controls are the reason. But there are a bunch of other refinements that add up too. Long exposures up to 90 minutes in manual mode, remembering where your fly by wire focus was when you turned the camera off, simplified AF mode selection menus, quieter audio preamp for video. I'd struggle with not having the long exposure settings, focus memory and AF upgrades in landscape and night shooting too. It's not going to improve image quality one iota though, unless you're maxing out the buffer in action burst shooting. :)

When you hit the merge button in Lightroom, the frame auto stacked on top of the two original images. How did you set this up? I always have to search for the merge image. Sometimes it shows up at the end of the film strip!
It's a check box in the merge to HDR dialog window. :)

Interesting video! I use 3 brackets with my Z6 +2,0 and -2. I will try your 2 bracket method of 0 and -3 as I think 2 photos are usually sufficient. Do you make sure with your 0 exposure that you can clearly see into the shadow areas or are you just worried about blown highlights when shooting into the sun or bright sky? Out of interest, you can have done the whole process in ON1 2021 so how does LR HDR compare to ON1 2021?
ON1's HDR has some great fine tuning options to control ghosting. I find that LR rarely has edge issues even with handheld capture. My most common process is to RAW process in LR (HDR is part of that). The reasons are twofold. 1) I have 23 years of photography in my LR catalog and a long history organizing in it since version one. 2) the LR sharpening, noise reduction, and panorama methods. I do run nearly every serious image I work on through ON1 Effects for finish editing though and I frequently use Layers for easy compositing and Resize for uprezzing.
Hey Hudson, I set up my Z6II and saved my settings to an old sd card. Question is, if I also set up my U1-U3 to different settings and save to the sd card, does save the main settings and the separate user settings? So if I have to reload settings from the sd card, are all user modes reloaded?

I have 23 years of files in my Lightroom catalog and I carry that catalog on the road with me. I've been a LR user since version 1 so far as organizing and raw processing goes. I love to finish edit and do work in Layers and Resize in ON1. Love the company, love the product and I recommend them as a more intuitive stand alone, but I'm very invested in LR for my digital asset management and some of the RAW processing features and panorama power.

LR/PS has stronger asset management, noise reduction, panorama merging, focus stacking, amd printing capabilities. Plus the ability to work with one catalog on multiple machines with previews of all my offline files is very key to me when I travel teaching workshops on my laptop. I love to finish edit and do local adjustments and use resize in PR. I love the way presets work in PR and I think it's easier software to learn with less room for messing up your files. It depends how much organizing and RAW processing power one needs.

It depends. If your main rig is the Z7 and you shoot action, yes. The big buffer, faster processing and quicker AF response and controls are the reason. But there are a bunch of other refinements that add up too. Long exposures up to 90 minutes in manual mode, remembering where your fly by wire focus was when you turned the camera off, simplified AF mode selection menus, quieter audio preamp for video. I'd struggle with not having the long exposure settings, focus memory and AF upgrades in landscape and night shooting too. It's not going to improve image quality one iota though, unless you're maxing out the buffer in action burst shooting. :)
