Field Study
DESCRIPTION
Basal rosette of thick-stemmed, broadly elliptic to egg shaped leaves with fibrous parallel veins. Spike of inconspicuous flowers borne in early summer forming brown seeds well into fall.
ECOLOGY
Disturbed areas, roadsides, fields, pastures, lawns, side walks, open woods. Highly adaptable, native to Eurasia virtually cosmopolitan.
HARVEST
The young tender leaves to eat fresh or cook the older mature leaves. The tender green flower spike good fresh or cooked. Brown mature seeds as a grain substitute/extender. (Plantain leaves can be found most of the year for survival situations as both food or medicine)
I have used plantain in salads many times. It`s good to know .

Thank you for the informative video. I had the thought to create a cultivation site for plantain. Your video mentioned it once being widely cultivated! Confirmation of my idea! And I liked your comments on using the seeds. My yard grows weeds better than veggies, so why not shift my harvest from a few squash to lots of edible and medicinal herbs. Thanks for taking the time to commit your thoughts to video.

I wonder if you can eat Common Plantain until you are full of it. Does it have any hazard? PFAF website said “High doses may cause a fall in blood pressure and diarrhoea” I wonder how much can be bad. Love your videos!

I wonder if you can tell me if the purple variety of plantain is also a useful medicinal and edible?
Unfortunately, the purple variety doesn't grow in my neck of the woods so I haven't yet had a reason to research it. However, any references I've seen suggest that they are just a variation of Plantago major. With that taken into consideration, I'd imagine their food/medical properties would be the same as the one in this video.

when can you know when to harvest plantain seeds? I think that it's stiff and not knowing when the seeds are ready? please help.
The flower stalk will turn brown and woody. Also the little seed pods become very brittle and you can easily break them open to release the tiny greyish seeds inside.
The Northwest forager is right in recognizing when the seeds are ready. I find here in oregon they aren't ready all at the same time, I harvest from many plants multiple times. Sometimes I use a small clippers and take the stem and sometimes I strip the stem of the seeds between thumb and forefinger and leave the stem. All depends on weather and maturity.
I use the plant by chewing a couple of leaves and swallowing.
I had pneumonia once and now if I'm congested this clears my sinuses and lungs.
