The numerical system we use today is the Hindu numerical system. With NO contributions from islam whatsoever. It was transmitted to Europe by the Latin translation of an Arabic book written by al khwarizmi called "On calculations with the Hindu numerals". Even the arabs in those times called it Hindu numerical system as given in the title of the book itself. Our modern maths is built in this system. The Mathematicians who developed it are Brahmagupt, Aryabhatta, Bhaskara I, etc. Same goes for algebra and many other things, they were invented in India and transmitted to Europe by Arab trade. There really isn't an inherent quality Islam has that makes it a lot more dangerous. Fact is, there's been too much immigration in Western nations amongst whom there were a lot of Muslims. It is not Islam's fault that cultures that are so different clash. Nor that allowing literal criminals to enter your country leads to more crime. The Indians did all the hard work, including the development of the concept of Zero, the Muslims colonised it, passed it thru THEIR writing system only (i.e. adapting to their letter forms) and so it got passed on. The "Hindu-" part of the proper name has of course been dropped in the last few decades as a sop to the bullying from the Muslim world.

@PACIFICNZ I am a Christian and a pacifist, but I would be the first to admit that after the initial missionary movement into Europe (that is, after the "conversion" of Scandinavia and the loss of North Africa) Christendom was a mixture of high culture and invention and barbaric violence. Violence is not the sole prerogative of Islam and calling others "barbaric" would be less hypocritical if Christians were more Christlike. You only have to look at the actions of the "civilised" "Christians" in the last 100 years to see that we can't climb on a moral high horse. Quite apart from the actions of European nations in two world wars, the behaviour of "civilised" troops saving the world from Communism in Vietnam or in the carpet bombing of Laos with DDT comes to mind. Every human culture faces similar issues, food and housing and clothing, etc. and every culture is inventive in its own context. Even societies known for a Warrior ethos can still produce beautiful art and literature - look at Japan or ancient China, as well as India itself.

I was considering converting to Islam when I was a teenager because I was taught so many of these idea about Islamic advances and I felt like it was better than what I thought was a backwards Christian world. I guess it would only be fair to the Western world if I could verify the truth of such statements rather than despise my own heritage.

It was transmitted to Europe by the Latin translation of an Arabic book written by al khwarizmi called "On calculations with the Hindu numerals". Even the arabs in those times called it Hindu numerical system as given in the title of the book itself. Our modern maths is built in this system. The Mathematicians who developed it are Brahmagupt, Aryabhatta, Bhaskara I, etc. Same goes for algebra and many other things, they were invented in India and transmitted to Europe by Arab trade. It is very well recorded history. So it is very easy to debunk anyone claiming these were "islamic inventions".

TLDR: Islam transmitted the Indian knowledge to Europeans who didn't know it before. They didn't invent any of that stuff --- it was ancient knowledge from India.
