Hi everyone! Zeb here, the guy that took the video. WE PUT THE STARFISH IN THE WATER. We did not take them out of the water, we found them walking/stranded on the beach at low tide and put them back into the ocean or tide pool. I took the video before putting that one back in the water because it was such an unusual sight. All the starfish (sea stars) we found alive on the beach were still alive when we put them back in the water. Just wanted to get that out there as many comments showed concern. The full details are in the description. Feel free to ask me anything below, though I'm not going to respond to everything and this was 5 years ago so I might not be able to remember some details.
Zeb Hallock Oh good... You had not posted when I wrote that he should have been put in the water. Sorry, that was the first thing I thought of and I was hoping whoever took the video would💙
We had no idea what was going on at first. We were all really confused but then realized that for some reason they were washing in and getting stuck in the sand. Some were just chill in the sand but many were trying to walk around and I assume get back to the ocean. There were a lot in tide pools as well and we just left them alone assuming they would be fine when the tide came back in. You can hear my wife in the background of the video since this was when we first got to the beach, and we were amazed at what we were seeing.
As someone who’s picked up and held a starfish before, their thousands of feet are almost like suction cups. Meaning that if you try to remove them off your skin, it’s a bit hard to do so. They don’t hurt, but feel a bit weird and ticklish at first.
I love how animals like this are just walking around gloriously existing and oblivious to their own beauty because they just are what they are but don’t see it. And that makes them even more beautiful.
Hm, but may be they do. May be they signal to each other: "you are so beautiful", and signal back "thank you", and "look, those two-legged creatures on the beach, so creepy" 😂
I don't know much about starfish beyond the fact that they exist. Seeing them move on the beach like that has aroused my curiosity. I'm going to read up on them. Thanks for putting them back in the water and thanks for the video. It was eye-opening. I appreciate it! 👍
And thank goodness only five to seven percent of it has been discovered. I wonder what other sea life would be endangered of the discovered the other ninety three to ninety five percent. Humanity hs managed to kill off so many aquatic species and I guess it'll only get worse as time goes on.
I'm very glad to read that this filmer quickly put this starfish back into the water after briefly filming. Starfish dry out and die rather quickly, if they are not returned to the water, just as any other fish will. They can breathe air only for a very short time, as they naturally breathe water. Starfish are only on the sand, if they have been accidentally stranded by an outgoing tide. Please rescue any starfish you see on the beach, by gently putting them back in the sea. They do not bite or sting. I've rescued hundreds this way.
But maybe stars thrown by the sea must die as nature intended. Because they must become food for crabs and other animals that live on the sand. And it's a regulation of population

I always tell my mom how great the internet is I came across this video because she thought star fish didn’t walk (she’s 63) so I showed her they do and she was blown away she could witness something she didn’t think she’ll ever see
That's how they move in the water too, also they don't have a brain or blood, instead sea water pumps the proteins inside their bodies, they are also the most closely related non vertebrates to humans....
I think it’s crazy it’s strong enough to raise its “appendages” up out of the water because it wouldn’t normally deal with gravity the same way we do on land when in the ocean.
*Hey guys, Jotaro here. I'll be writing my thesis on this neat starfish I found walking on sand. As you can see, it has a lot of little legs, and it moves slowly. It can also curl up its limbs at will, which is pretty freaky if you ask me. I saw it on the beach a couple days ago, and I just had to write about it. It seems pretty harmless unless it secretly harnesses the power of a stand. Weird concept. Hard to explain. Anyways, thanks for reading, and I'm hoping that you'll get my degree to me soon since my mom, Holly, will pester me nonstop if I dont get it. Jotaro Out.*
Joshua DW Some underwater creatures don't need to pursue food, it comes to them. They actually get by sifting the ocean floor. And there's barnacles & oysters. Starfish move V E R Y slowly usually, it's unnatural for it to be out on the sand like this, it's probably panicking 🦀

Very cool! These are the sorts of things I like to take videos of. I haven’t seen any starfish on the beach or in the tidal pools here, but still hoping!
Seeing a starfish move about is pretty cool! Their radially symmetric bodies give me no clue as to how they’re so used to moving around aside from those tube feet that they have.

This is so unique.. have never ever seen a starfish walk.. let alone on sand.. it sways in slowly.. ⭐️
angel da vinci. Nah ain't walking he's running for his life he's going to die soon enough he stays in that sand
Johnny Life
A slow running perhaps...!
well their shell is pretty heavy not to mention the amount of energy to move that feet no wonder they were too slow
Ya right.. a little longer on sand n they can die..
its very relaxing

very cool moment caught on camera for the world to see, also tyvm for placing this starfish back into the ocean 🙏
Never in my 62 yrs of life have i ever witnessed star fish walking. Utterly amazing😮 what a sight to see
I never seen one walking before either, I'm 31
Same here. It seems as if we are twins. 😁
That makes 2 of us, and I'm 50:)
60. Im shocked. I didn't think there was much I haven't seen or at least knew of. That is wild. Huge size. Weird too.
I always tell my mom how great the internet is I came across this video because she thought star fish didn’t walk (she’s 63) so I showed her they do and she was blown away she could witness something she didn’t think she’ll ever see
Stunning photography. I had no idea that's how starfish moved about on land.
It creeps the f*** out of me
@@robertsifuentesiv3721 same
*Videography
That's how they move in the water too, also they don't have a brain or blood, instead sea water pumps the proteins inside their bodies, they are also the most closely related non vertebrates to humans....
I think it’s crazy it’s strong enough to raise its “appendages” up out of the water because it wouldn’t normally deal with gravity the same way we do on land when in the ocean.
This is a great point. Wow! I wonder if the starfish was exerting itself more than usual?
They sit at the bottom of the ocean sometimes so I'm pretty sure this wasn't that hard of a task for them
Gravity is man made bull. Its a theory but ppl quote it like its fact.
What a fascinating thought. It's different underwater.
No it has to deal with water pressure.
Красивые, фантастические создания! Спасибо, что вернули их в воду!
Что-то не видно, что она в воду попала. Хотя могли-бы и вернуть.
Starfish: *walks on sand*
Jotaro: Must be my lucky day
*Hey guys, Jotaro here.

I always thought starfish stayed in one place...this scared the living hell out of me.
How would they eat if they didn't move?
Joshua DW Some underwater creatures don't need to pursue food, it comes to them. They actually get by sifting the ocean floor. And there's barnacles & oysters. Starfish move V E R Y slowly usually, it's unnatural for it to be out on the sand like this, it's probably panicking 🦀
Kitty Meow starfish eat mussels and oysters
me too!

Wow! How incredible! Great to capture this on film!
Yes, I had no idea how rare this was until recently. Originally posted in 2012 when I shot the video on an old Samsung smartphone I had in my pocket.

That's amazing. I had no idea they had these tiny little legs. I've never seen one walking like that. It's so cool.
Tracey Harris, these are called Tube feet
They're like jelly, and powered by water pressure. Starfish have really fucked grip strength too, because of how their muscles work. They never get tired.
Tracey Harris its tentacles
I feel like watching The Exorcist wouldn’t bother me as much as this
@christianne1985 true we have big lanky long bodies and small bodies
This thing is creepy
Seriously man I dont know but why it is scary😂
Very cool! These are the sorts of things I like to take videos of. I haven’t seen any starfish on the beach or in the tidal pools here, but still hoping!
He's trying to walk towards the nearby Cthulu church.

İ a dagon İ a hydra!!
Nyarlathotep just said fuck it and then star fish
It's a Sunday. Never seen an eldritch horror go to Cthulhu's R'lyehian church before?
You mean The Esoteric Order of Dagon?
Wow I never seen a starfish walk in my life, didn’t know they have so many legs.
That are not legs. They are tubes through water pumps out and due to hydrostatic pressure they move
Those leg are also star fish's eyes
Patrick: aren't you watching me?
@@rameshrr296 by any reasonable standard, they're legs. Body parts used for walking.
Seeing a starfish move about is pretty cool! Their radially symmetric bodies give me no clue as to how they’re so used to moving around aside from those tube feet that they have.
