Mercedes have always been certified sandbaggers while Ferrari is notorious for keeping their tifosi hyped in testing and then falling apart as the season gets underway.
YouTubbers use stock footage over and over, and mirror sometimes to eek out the copyright-free stuff. Even in professional documentaries they do it because the editor is an artist, not a technician. Even seen it when there is absolutely no need. Documentaries are about facts not artifice. It devalues all of the message completely. IMNSHO - BTW no mention of Gordon Murray - he was clever too.
@@RedRouge-j4j not the case here though, because even if this was real footage mirrored, the car would still go the right direction, towards us. And it's quite clear that the moving car is edited in :)
I think the most famous would be the 1996 pre-season test where backmarker team Supersport F1 rolled out a 4WD car, set 10 consecutive fastest laps and recorded the highest top speed of any car that year at 389 kph. It was amazing that no one took notice of this car, almost as it never existed.
Bernie Collins literally only mentioned the McLaren flub with the upside down piece of suspension today on the SkySportsF1 podcast and had a giggle about it Love the videos!!
Not testing, but the first qualifying of 2021 in Bahrain (where they had been testing) Yuki Tsunoda qualified top of the time sheets in Q1 in.an Alpha Tauri. We all thought we had found the next Schumacher/Vettel/Hamilton etc... Turns out, nope, he just knew this track really well.
Not going to lie I expected this to just be 6 entries of ferrari with blistering championship winning pace in testing and then a dog through the season.
Fun fact: The first Super Aguri car was actually the last Orange Arrows chassis, recovered from an Australian mall. The last Super Aguri (SA09) car was the BrawnGP championship winning car; double diffuser and all. The Disney movie about Brawn is about as factual as Bed-knobs and Broomsticks.
Gordon Murray's wheeze of allowing the dynamics of suspension to lower the car during bumping around, and a bleed valve in the overflow tank let air/oil out on the slow-down lap. Making the car legal when static long enough.
I'd add mastercard lola: in the preseason testing they were last, but not that far off the group, like only a couple tenths to the stewart team During race however... we dont know. They didnt manage to qualify for the 107% rule. They emptied the tank to still be last
RB 2010's stunt is amazing, a close second was the teams having comedic dongs on their cars for the stepped noses. It made it into all the serious F1 mags. Article on the new rules, photo of a strap on strapped to the front of that year's McLaren or Ferrari or Williams. Whoever came up with that and got it spread through the paddock is either genius or crazy, and no idea which
My favorite might not have been an actual fooling, but we all thought it was. Mercedes in 2022, where they showed up to testing then whipped out the zero pods and we were all convinced they were MASSIVELY sandbagging but it turned out to just be that awful xD
Bro, best F1 tomfoolery happend in 1978 when Brabham showed up with a jet fan attached to the back of the car, won the race and then tossed it because Bernie Ecclestone put his political allegiances over the team's success.
McLaren’s Rear wheel braking. Extra small brake pedal for only breaking of the rear wheels causing extra control of over or under steering. A journalist manage to glance into Mika Hakinnen’s cockpit, realizing something was odd and took a picture of it.
March/Leyton House: 881, CG891, CG901 McLaren: MP4-16, MP4-17 (not the D-Version in 2003), MP4-18 (didn't even race), MP4-19, MP4-21 Red Bull: RB3, RB4, (RB5 was only a contender, because Brawn had literally no budget that season) RB10, RB11, RB12, RB13, RB14, RB15, RB16 (not its B-Version in 2021) So, 17 in total 😀
I understand this channel now. Its Matt doing what he used to do at *redacted* because he loves this style of video but couldnt do it right away on matt and tommy p1 probs for legal reasons.
Ferrari, 2016: Ferrari looked to be going all guns blazing heading into the 2016, having repeatedly set the pace in their new car for that year, the SF-16 H, and appeared to be finally poised to mount a full challenge to Mercedes. That turned out not to be the case as not only did Mercedes win both titles, but Ferrari had their second winless season in 3 years. They dropped behind Red Bull to third in the Constructors Championship in 2016, with 398 points to Red Bull's 468 (which for the Milton Keynes team included 2 wins)
Late 80’s McLaren were using a different part of the track to record test times, so main timing never recorded their fastest times. They knew but no one else until race day.
For me, surely it would be when McLaren turned up to the first race with the air nlet just in front of the driver's cabin that wasn't there on the car during testing that stole the rear wing when covered by the driver's knee
Brawn didn't fool anybody, it was the other teams that fooled themselves as they couldn't believe they were so far behind a car that had a bodge job engine installation from a team that nearly didn't make the grid. That car topped the timesheets every day of the test though. Mercedes really were in trouble in 19, mostly due to reliability and it was only a last minute update before the start of the season to the engine that really got them going. This combined with Ferrari actually being a lot worse than their testing pace suggested had the effect of making them look like they had been sandbagging.
Yeah, people forget that with no budget cap, teams could do all sorts of stuff to catch up. Plus without the engine locked, they could also improve performance, they really need to loosen the engine regs and increase the budget cap.
@@joshn1678The budget caps fine, we're already seeing the grid close up because of it, and the engines are all pretty close, with Renault being the worst and it's less than 20hp down (remember when Ferrari's V12 was 100hp down on the Renault V10 in 93, those days are long gone). Honestly, we really don't need a return to the days of $250-300mil budgets.
McLaren 2013: To fit a part upside down should never make a car faster. Analyzing that car in that year makes the conclusion that McLaren has designed the suspension wrong by using wrong inputs. It made the whole concept into a wrong direction. It was a basic design mistake. It also ruined the confidence of the designing team and on the top of that Honda came....
I'm fully expecting Mercedes to consistently put in fast lap times throughout this test, gas up the fans promising a title charge for this year, only to totally flop at the first race and be back into midfield mediocrity.
Didn't Red Bull do something similar last year trying to fool everyone? Seems like I remember reports of their drivers literally removing their foot from the accelerators before crossing the line to bring down their lap times.
every completed lap is as long as you stay within the rules. Running low on fuel is not forbidden so... (there are some rules for actual quali and race)
Beating the official lap record in testing may not become a new official lap record but it still looks good if you are trying to impress potential sponsors. Of course if you manage to set the absolute fastest time ever around a circuit that always looks good even if it doesn't count as an official race lap record.
How can you mention Merc 2019 and not mention they actually had two very different cars for each of the two weeks of testing, only showing their real car in week 2? You can't deceive more in F1 testing than showing up with a fake car

No they thought their zero pods would be the fastest of them all, that’s why they didn’t use the zero pods in Barcelona testing…to only bring it to Bahrain testing in 2022… they didn’t claim it to be slow

Nope, they were actually better than anyone else bar Ferrari, who had been hiding in Italy all winter. Brawn has already been covered in the video. Glory runs, yeah, right!
