My car is a bright yellow Ford Focus Coupe. This has a few specific advantages:
    1) When I walk out to the Costco parking lot, I have very little finding my car.
    2) When I am coming up behind someone, I'm much more likely to be seen in their mirror.
    3) It is much less likely to be stolen.
    4) It's cheerful.

Just say "Because it's cheap" already.
Gotta love how when they talk about other colors they go for ridiculous colors, nobody is saying that the manufacturers need to make a whole ton of lime green and neon pink and orange cars, no they could just expand their base colors to blue and red and that already would help, there are so many shades that you can get with blue and red that look great and would make the car colors less boring.

Some things not mentioned in this video, in no specific order:
    1. Cost: White paint seems to be the cheapest to make, which is why it is often the only colour offered without a surcharge.
    2. UV stability: Especially red pigments fade with time in ultraviolet light, this especially for cars that are always parked outside. With UV-protecting clear coat that effect can be slowed, but it adds extra cost.
    3. Reflectiveness: A car parked in the sun will heat up more the darker the colour is. White and silver are best because they reflect most radiation.
    4. Some colours are commonly associated with specific function. For example in Germany, taxis are light ivory, whereas postal cars are yellow. Private car owners might not want their car to be associated with those functions.
    5. Then again, a definite plus of rare colours is immediately recognizing your car from afar in a big crowded parking lot.
Personally I really like bright green or dark blue.
As a side note may I add as a railfan that until around 1970 at least in continental Europe steam locomotives were generally black, passenger trains dark green, freight trains brown. Which was for practical reasons: Those paints could be reproduced easily, they were very stable (so didn't require frequent repaints) and didn't show the dirt as easily.
The railways later generally turned towards "friendlier" colours, and in high speed trains it seems like with aircraft that light grey or white dominates ... whereas many have chosen red for locomotives despite the problems with UV stability.
One obvious disadvantage of white by the way: You see dirt very easily. Even silver, due to the way it reflects, tends to hide dirt much better. In winter it is especially bad when you see dirty cars against the white snow, and since there is a lot of dirt in winter, cars are rarely clean around that time.

Meanwhile Malaysia & Singapore are probably unique in having red armoured vehicles & water cannons for riot control, probably as a legacy of British colonialism. As for railways, mainland China has also traditionally painted their cars green, but its HSR trainsets white (except those that serve Hainan island, which are light blue), though its new normal-speed CR2 push-pull (?) intercity trains have reverted to green (for those running domestically, maybe as they're considered slow compared to HSR, while the one exported to Laos is white, probably as CR2 is regarded as a significant upgrade for rail in Laos). Meanwhile Japan has left its commuter trains mostly unpainted silver but its limited-express & _Shinkansen_ trains mostly white, except for newer rolling stock run by JR East, whose colo(u)rs depend on the route they serve e.g. red & beige for the E6 rolling stock that serve the Akita _Shinkansen_ , in reference to the red lanterns featured at a traditional festival in the northern Japan region served by this train service. On the other hand, while Taiwan/ROC's newer intercity rolling stock are mostly white, older ones were mostly beige & orange instead (commuter ones are silver in colo(u)r too, like Japan)

For those of us who can remember, the car companies in the 60's and 70's offered a wide array of exterior AND interior colors. Nowadays, of course, you have to take what the car companies want to give you. It's not that boring colors are "popular." It's that, if you want a new car, you're forced to buy a car with a boring color that is even styled, more or less, like every other car. Yes, I'm sure that some colors and styles were always more popular than other colors/styles even way back when, but at least the less popular colors/styles were offered to those people who wanted to express themselves - and there were a huge spectrum of styles and car colors out on the road. The same trend has occurred in the new-home industry. Everything must be bland, and the requirement for blandness is built right into the HOA rules, which were written by the builder. In the Phoenix area, for example, it seems that 99% of all new homes must be one of three shades of brown stucco. Even white seems to be no longer an option. If a consumer wants to buy a brand new home, the consumer MUST buy a plain brown cube that looks, more or less, like the cardboard box that a washer or dryer comes in. In the cases of cars and homes, it is merely a lack of artistic design and an overall contempt for consumers.

I did not notice at the time that all the nuns were dressed alike, all the girl students had the same uniform, and all the male students had dress short-sleeve shirts and clip-on ties. All individuality is being wiped out, I'm afraid. Where I live, all the homes built in the last 30 years must be brown stucco. Miles and miles of nothing but brown sh--- colored cubes that won't show the dirt because they start off that color. And there is little more variety in the cars. No wonder we're all angry as hell! LOL! Who needs "communism" when you have a few big companies in every industry writing all the rules?

I still will buy a green Outback despite it being more expensive, just because I want it to stand out more in a parking lot and I think it matches the outdoorsy characteristics of the vehicle. Normal colors were probably a thousand less, but they just look so dull and uninspired that I couldn't stomach it, even though they were cheaper and more readily available.

When I purchased a car back in 2018 I was determined to buy a red car. I absolutely didn't want white, black, gray or silver. I want a car color that I can find easily in a public parking lot. It took effort, but I got a red Honda Accord Hybrid. In 2019, when my husband's Ford Fusion was totaled, I gave him my red Accord and then embarked to buy a blue Toyota Corolla HB. That was even harder. So much for all the blue Corollas in their sales literature. I wanted the XSE trim and ended up having to drive up to Nashua, NH to get one. I absolutely love my Corolla HB. Recently my son's car was totaled in an accident and he went car shopping. All he could find were black or white cars. He really, really wanted blue. No such luck. He ended up with a white Mazda 3 HB. Maybe if car manufacturers painted more cars red or blue there would be more red or blue cars on the road.

They missed one of the biggest reasons. In the 80's and 90's , there were studies out that stated that red cars were #1, for highway patrols to notice for speeding. Black was second. Whites and grays tended to blend in. Especially on the highways of California where they had to actually "clock" you physically . In the 80's , Nevada could sit on the side of the road and use a radar gun. So you allowed a "rabbit" to clear the way , then sped up in their path. But when you passed over to Cali, you had to watch your rearview window, so staying ahead of traffic was a better way to speed. CHP were infamous for using on and off exits to sneak up behind you and "clock" you. Red sports cars were an easy target for them.

I've heard it said that if you buy a car in any color other than black, white or silver, you just threw away $300 of resale value. That said, when I acquired my 2020 Ford Escape, my first color choice was Velocity Blue, a bright blue. The dealer had just sold one in that color the day before and had no others in stock. On to Plan B. I took one in Dark Persian Green. It looks more like a darker, but not Navy, blue. When it's in the sunlight, it looks more blue than green. It is different. It must be popular in this area, since I saw that my dealer had several in stock in that color.

I can speak from the Porsche perspective. Many Porsche buyers particularly in America want something immediately. They also want to be able to flip their cars quickly and with little monetary risk. It’s all economics. Thus, we see significant percentages of white, black and silver variants. Porsche offers Paint To Sample (PTS) colors which can be virtually any color. These PTS cars are more expensive and take more time to produce. Ironically, PTS cars are now becoming more in demand amongst Porsche buyers because they’re NOT white, black or silver. Porsche charges a significant amount of money today for a PTS to do, because they can. They have a very capable paint shop and can truly produce nearly any color. They do extensive testing in advance to ensure that the unique desire is doable. From a mass production perspective, it’s much less expensive to run the same colors through day after day, because the time invoked in prepping their paint robots for a color change can be lessened. Porsche, being essentially a bespoke car producer, continues to offer PTS and even Leather To Sample. Just be sure to bring your checkbook. Even a simple non standard blue or red variant will cost over $10,000. With nearly 60 years behind me in Porsche association, I learned a lot about their unique programs. If you someday are driving along and see a blue turquoise cabriolet with yellow brake calipers go rushing by, it’s me. There are 3 others in the USA with that color now as well. My other Porsche is ruby red, and our Rolls-Royce is a two-tone-just like they used to be done decades ago. Be individual! Be unique!

Red fades faster than other colors. I had a red Corvette and when I popped up the hideaway headlights, the paint on them was different because they never saw sunlight. I read, and I noticed it myself, that yellow cars attract hornets. Some colors are too hot in the sun. I had a dark green Barracuda. If you touched it after it was sitting in the sun, you could get a serious burn on your hand. I don't think I would buy a white car because they become invisible in the snow. So the best choices are light colors like cyan, silver, lime green, amber, etc.

For me it's a matter of maintaining the car. If you have an special color or a limited color you will have much more problems to correct scratches we all know happens in the day use.

*Simple Answer:* White Fades less and scratches are less visible. Also when in sun Lighter colour reflect heat and last long.
Also its easier to match interior and cost less for white or black.

There are some colours that are just flat out dangerous, such as the ones that are the same colour as the road. Those mid greys, and especially the brown-grey colours should be banned. If you like those colours, put them in your house or office, not on the road where they can render your car invisible.

I think I may have liked black (especially with my removable bright yellow magnetic business signs) but they also look good agains the deep forest green.

I guess since more people nowadays are buying cars so they can drive for Lyft/Uber, there is a huge demand for white, black, and silver cars because those companies rules are you can't have too flashy of car colors and they can't be too old, especially black, because you can make more money with Uber Black or Lyft Lux black.

Why are they talking about how popular certain colors are when those are the only colors available? How do they even know? We don't have the option to purchase other colors. So, all they can actually know is that as between a sea of boring colors, we prefer certain boring colors over other boring colors. btw, white is also popular because it's the most visible and considered the safest color. I bought a yellow Fiat 500.

REALITY CHECK - it became hard to select other colors - as even blue and red are grouped with higher priced versions of a model and/or with high cost option groups. They say the few colors are popular - but reality expensive to purchase - and that makes a difference. Don't need pastel or neon type colors. Seems the USA they think red, white and blue - even for many city buses. Chicago, had a tradition of green buses. One head of the CTA said ridership would go up if they painted the buses red, white and blue. What came of that, a big bill short term and boring buses. The opportunity to paint energy smart "GREEN BUSES" - green again - passed with no action. The most popular bus design at present I think are the ball park Cubs, White Sox and Bears buses - which on game days are used for such and other times drive elsewhere.

Green from the 90s didnt age well and was more noticeable when it was old and would flake different than other colors, and usually I recall it being too dark so it really looks black in the night time even under street lights or in car headlights. I felt it was often associated with more basic cars like the Accord. Range Rover and Honda for their Passport are the only cars I can think of that can come in green by standard.

  • @CrossRoadsOfTime

They seem to be overlooking something about these cars. I recently had the opportunity of buying a new car. a totally new 2021 car it was never owned by anyone else ever. what where my options? white and silver. I wanted blue, or maybe even a purplish color make it stand out a bit more and be easier to find. but my only option there would of been to get one of the two colors that it was made in and get it painted. I would challenge that notion that these plain colors are really the most popular ones. because I ended up with the silver car not because I liked the silver color, not because that was my preference as any one simply looking at the amount of cars sold in in what color might think. but because it wasn't worth the extra $2 grand to get the color I really wanted. So it's not that no one wants the pink Cady, it's that of everyone getting a Cady few can afford to get it in a custom color, and so the 3 basic colors that don't cost extra get picked despite them actually being rather low on that persons list of preferred colors.
