As for the Drive to Work day I was on holiday over the period and wouldn't be able to use the new minibus for getting to work! The only times I've noticed a significant increase in traffic (both car and bike) in London was during the tube strikes a few years back. Even more cars sat stock still and some proper rusty BSO's jostling for position in the ASL's :-)
They do look tighter. The HGV had stationary traffic to the left of it so had nowhere to go. It also helps that I know this road like the back of my hand. :-)
I do keep a close eye on what is happening ahead, so should spot possible lane changes etc. If there is a gap in traffic up ahead, that is a danger zone.
Do you think the camera set up makes some of the gaps appear more narrow than they are? Descending the first hill on the switchback, looks like some pretty tight gaps! Though I commute with panniers so do tend to need extra space... Also, at 5:21 passing HGV on its nearside - do you feel this was a safe move, and if so, why? Were there any clues in traffic that would ensure the HGV wasn't going to pull a lane change or lane position adjustment towards between the two lanes? Cheers
I got stuck in my pedals at the beginning of october and all i did was tip over. Ive been in alot of pain with my knee since - doc says soft tissue injury and it will heal with time and physio. on the waiting list for physio and it will probably be another 2 months so im having private treatment meantime. I think im just scared i'll fall on that side and do more damage :o((
Some stats from TFL for London, average speeds increased for cars from 9.3mph to a whooping 9.4mph. My Garmin has me pegged at I'd imagine around a 16mph average for the last 6 months when I've had the device. 1-0 to the bike then.....
I know Gaz well via online communications. He is actually one of the good guys. He just didn't come across well in the documentary due to the way he was edited and perhaps the way he said a couple of things. He run the excellent SillyCyclists website. Go and have a look.
That's a little cruel! :-) To be fair I think many just don't see the option. It is quite a leap to take, especially when a lot of people consider cycling as unsafe. Not everyone has the 'guts' we have.
It's good experience. Just give yourself a bit more time and slow the pace and you'll be fine. The more you're out in bad conditions the more your technique and skill improve, and with that comes confidence.
at 1:02 into the video you go past our blue nissan leaf electric car !, the only one not emitting exhaust fumes at you! (driving after school drop off) Once the boys get big enough they can cycle it!
Yup, I've never seen the que by past Cannisburn Toll. I join that que at Fulton St and head towards the Clydeside Express Way. I must say that the mini-roundabout has got to be the worst roundabout in Scotland! The old system which barred drivers from turn right from Canniesburn Toll was much better. I've seen many a near miss because of cars turning right.

Annoyingly I get the car anyway on a Tuesday, because old, large and fragile violins don't transport well by bike. So I actually took part in this today :(
There has to be a pair of cyclists riding 2-abreast right at the very front of all that traffic causing the tailback... ;-) It really does make you wonder why folk will put up with that, sat in their cars going nowhere, day after day. Maybe seeing a bike filtering legally and vanishing into the distance might make a few people realise how much quicker cycling can be.
the only thing about that video i would say is that why would anyone want to sit in that queue every day when there are other transport options open to them and also at the start of the video you cut infront of a lerner at canniesburn roundabout, personally i think thats a bit rude/unthoughtful trying to learn to drive in that traffic and at that roundabout is stressful eough without having the added worry of cyclists cutting you up
it was clearly so busy because all the cyclists were on the road causing traffic ... derp see that's such a stupid argument :P BIKES DON'T CAUSE TRAFFIC, TRAFFIC CAUSES TRAFFIC!
