    A good rule of thumb on installing metal to metal threading on plumbing is if there is no rubber washer present then plumbers tape is needed. Always wrap it the direction the threads are going and boom, you are golden 🤷‍♂️.

      I wrapped it the incorrect way the 1st time around and it was not pretty!

      @@DIYTutorialGuy I’ve been turning them off lately…afraid of them freezing and busting. Is that not necessary?

    • @DIYTutorialGuy

      That is a good question, and I will do my best to answer.
      If your house is insulated your pipes should be safe.
      The basement in my current house gets very cold, but never cold enough that I can see my breath when I breathe.
      There have been a few weeks here in PA that were in the single digits, and no pipes burst.
      Some people will say to leave a faucet running during those extremely cold nights, but I’ve yet to do so and have yet to encounter a problem in any house I have lived in during my life time.
      Now, I do turn off the outdoor faucet from inside, and leave it turned to open, for the winter.
      Hope this helps!

      Thanks for the compliment!
      This channel came about because I was frustrated with what seemed like every UA-cam tutorial required the viewer to either have a vast array of tools, or be able to spend $$ to buy specialized tools for 1 job.
      Most people can’t afford that, life has many people facing hard times, and I wanted to be able to help out.
      So, this is my contribution.
      I’m very happy to hear you say it helped!

    Thanks for the tutorial. I like watching any videos on projects before I do them myself. Quite self explanatory most of the time. I have a leaky valve that only leaks when you are shutting it or opening it. Doesn’t leak when completely open or closed. I’m replacing both for peace of mind

      One piece if advice - use teflon tape and then put a coat of pipe dope over the tape.
      You should have no leak after that!

    Nice video. Thanks for putting it out there. One thing that I do along with teflon tape is add pipe dope on the teflon tape. I have found that this generally gives a water tight seal in all of my installations.

    boiler drain valves usually have lead (low lead, but lead touching water). for a washing machine idk it could be argued either way but id go zero lead still since im not a drain or a boiler 😂 i dont have backflows on my water supply but i do shoot and reload so i guess im an idiot 😂

    I'm not at all a fan of those full turn values. Other better shut-off value options include brass 1/4 turn ball values or a brass dual value with one lever. Full turn values are crap.

      My advice is to take the valve off that needs replacing and take it to the store with you. There you can talk to someone and get the correct size.
      Remember to shut the water off before removing the valves, and leave a faucet open on the same floor as the washer.

    Just found your video! It was super helpful. I’ll be changing mine out this week. So I was reading the comments and someone said to put the plumber’s tape in the same direction as the threading. Which one is correct? I believe you said it goes the opposite way.
    Also! Maybe you have some insight. My washer ONLY uses hot water. I’ll played around with the valves and it seemed they were both on. Hoping this replacement fixes it…

    • @DIYTutorialGuy
      @DIYTutorialGuy  Рік тому

      You’ve got this!
      I made a huge mistake and the tape should wrap around the pipe in the same clockwise direction of how the pipe will turn into the fitting.
      In regards to only having hot water, is there only 1 line coming into the laundry room??

    • @angelicacordero6408
      @angelicacordero6408 Рік тому +1

      @@DIYTutorialGuy no there are two lines. My hope and guess is that the lines were switched when getting attached to the washing machine. I’ll check to run a hot water load to see if it comes out cold. If so, that theory seems like it would be correct. But if that doesn’t work, I’m not sure what the issue is!

    How did you deal with the hot water side and avoid being burned

    • @DIYTutorialGuy
      @DIYTutorialGuy  6 місяців тому +1

      Excellent question!
      What I did first was turn off the water to the house, as shown in the video.
      I then turned on the cold water at the closest sink and let it run until there was no water coming out.
      I did not run any hot water.
      After this, I removed the hot water valve.
      A small amount came out, not enough to burn me, and I then stuffed a rag in the pipe to absorb the small amount of remaining water.
      That’s it.
      The water heater did not drain via the removed valve.

    It just happened this morning after we had already had an issue with the hot water valve inside the washing machine.
    I can’t find the valve to turn off the water, can I just turn water off for the house?

    • @DIYTutorialGuy
      @DIYTutorialGuy  Рік тому +1

      Yes, you can.
      However, what you will want to do is once you turn off the main water supply, leave a faucet running in the sink closest to the washing machine before you take off the valves.
      I say this because once you remove the hot water valve, there is a chance the remaining hot water in your water heater will look for an out, and the faucet left on will allow this to occur.

    • @rachelr8897
      @rachelr8897 Рік тому +1

      @@DIYTutorialGuy I just walked to my husband about it and he told me where the valve is and like everything in this house the location seemed strange and not a place I would look.
      He said if you open the valve all the way the active leaking stops and I think we should go ahead and replace them. They are 30+ yrs old and definitely corded. Having to mess with the thing in the washing machine had us turning it on and off so it must have broken it’s seal.
      Guess I’m going to the hardware store today lol

      My advice is to unplug the washer first, then remove the grounding clamp and make the needed repair.
      Once that is complete, reconnect the grounding clamp and turn the power back on to the washer.

    • @DIYTutorialGuy

      @@dianed4190 I must have misunderstood your question, my apologies.
      Are you able to take a look at your breaker box? There should be a grounding wire coming from there that runs to the ground for the house.
      If this runs to the clamp on the valve you are referencing, then I would say that is the ground for the house.
      If it does not, then I would think it does not ground your house.
