This song was written in Belfast in November 2002. He opened the show by saying he'd just written it that afternoon at the soundcheck - and then played it. Incredible. I'm going to see him at the same venue tonight - first time he's played this theatre since. Maybe he'll give us another premiere!
Mr Adams at his very very best. He opened his "Love is Hell" non-tour with this song at the Manchester Academy in 2003. Spellbinding that night. At times he was his own worst enemy. On some nights he could be unbeatable. Living proof of the word 'Enigma'.
Ryan Adams is an absolute musical genius, 'Shadowlands' is one of my favourite tracks from his best album 'Love is Hell pt 1". I thought he had reached the pinnacle of his career when this came out. Sadly, he was probably at his lowest ebb. He played this as the opening number at Manchester Academy in November 2003 I could quite happily have expired on the spot, it was an absolutely amazing experience, chills down the back of my neck, the works. Whatever happened to Ryan Adams?
Very cool to hear this version. For anyone wondering, the audio tracks (L and R channel) are out of phase, which is part of why the audio sounds so funny. Flip the polarity of one of the channels and it sounds significantly better.
Thanks so much for adding this. My favourite Ryan song. Is it taken from a concert, or is it a studio recording? I saw him play this on the "Rock n Roll" tour, however it was no way as good as this :-)

This man was on another level. Unbelievable songs just pouring out of him and then performing them like this. Just unreal.
Glad no one came here to slander the man. Just enjoy the music, people.

I absolutely love the atmospherics of this song. DRA is simply genius at capturing emotion and atmosphere - the images within his lyrics are perfect.

This is his best tune, IMO: incredible 👌

OMG! This is the best version ever!
Absolutely stunning
Pure songwriting god..
Best version. Best artist. Gee, whatever happened to Ryan Adams?
Just life. He’s on tour again and seems to be killing it
It's a different lyric on this one compared to the studio version. Same thing with Come Pick Me Up, still very great though.
Best part is still that Tele-solo in the end. Where is that? :)
Some will always escape the Shadowlands.
omg how so fucking true!
Yes

Her mother hides the pearls.
It's actually "And her ivory and pearls". The studio version is a bit different

He fell into the orchestra's pit at the front of the stage.
