Lok Sabha Elections: Congress' Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury Aims For Sixth Term; TMC Fields Yusuf Pathan
Baharampur, formerly Berhampore, is one of the 42 constituencies in West Bengal. The seat has witnessed a seesaw battle between the Left and Congress since its establishment in 1952, gradually favouring the Congress in recent years.
A voter turnout of 66.05% was registered in eight Lok Sabha constituencies of West Bengal till 3 pm on Monday, an Election Commission official said. Both Congress Baharampur candidate Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury and his TMC rival former cricketer Yusuf Pathan said they were happy with the way polling is being conducted.
Historically, it was a stronghold of the Left, particularly the Revolutionary Socialist Party (RSP), except for 1984 when Congress won the seat. However, the political landscape shifted in 1999 when Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury from the Congress won the seat.
The Baharampur Lok Sabha constituency has seven Assembly segments - Burwan (SC), Kandi, Bharatpur, Rejinagar, Beldanga, Baharampur and Naoda. Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, the current President of the West Bengal unit of Congress, has played a major role in securing consecutive victories for the grand old party.
